Getting My Autocross Mojo Back - SN95 Mustang
I took the CAM-T SN95 Mustang to the Old Dominion Region SCCA Autocross at Langley Speedway in July 2024. It was a technical course that was a lot of fun and reminded me of how I started. I finished 7th raw time and 5th in PAX.

nice driving! but man those walls scare me lol. hoping to make my way down to your region sometime this season and catch up with you guys.
How did you get the glue from the silver tape out of the inside of the lens?
looked like quite the fun course to drive
Cool upgrade, super overkill for any light duty track/daily. The serviceability kinda sucks on those. I can't do quick pad changes, and the unsprung weight is massive. I think the ATS would be better with the 13.2 rotor. It facilitates almost everything else. The brake bias would also be perfect. Now, don't take my opinion too seriously. Im talking to these who don't do enough track, and daily their mustangs. I have made my own kits. The best ones were 4 piston willwoods on a 13" cobra rotor. I wanted inexpensive rotor replacements. Took some work, tho as the caliper used was the one with ears.
I completely agree. The ATS with the 13.2 rotor was my original intention and I may switch to in the future. The XTS combo works great though and I have no complaints other than the weight.
@RinerAutomotive Yeah, I follow you on Instagram. You definitely are better off with the 14", I would switch to the other corvette caliper for ease of service. I'm probably going to play with some s550/s650 calipers, my spindles are already modified to use a bracket.
That patchwork pit pavement looks like a challenge
Yea changing from poor pavement to asphalt in the infield was not good. Luckily the circle track portion was grippy
Great run!👍Don't worry about not looking "graceful" You were properly aggressive! Graceful isn't how a driver's hands or stiff suspension going over bumps should look in grippy AutoX conditions anyway. Qualifying for Indy 500 with slow, smooth hands has absolutely NOTHING in common with AutoX. Elements come fast and furious! Ignore "conventual wisdoms" from drivers (who aren't quick themselves) when they say dumb things like "slow is fast." 🤔 No, slow is..........wait for it....................SLOW! 😉 😂
Haha that's right slow is slow! I did have a few screw ups and I'm still fighting the electric power steering at times. But I'm working with the company to get it figured out. It was still a great day, I just feel the was some untapped potential left.
I have a 98 cobra. And im thinking of doing the setup you have on the front. You think ill be okay with the stock
With stock what? Brake components should all be matched up. If you change the size of one thing, it's possible other components may need to be changed to keep the system safe and effective.
If you want to keep stock, go for ats 4 piston and 13.2" rotor. Ford already did the math for you. Cobra r brembos are similar. Not much will change, so the bias won't be off by much. Wheel fitment, 18" is a necessity when doing 14" rotors.
Ryan Kirkwood and the UMI Performance group put on an awesome show . I have been going to the autocross challenge since 2017 before Ryan bought the track . Every year it gets better and better hope you can come up for the Autocross Challenge 2025 .
Can't agree more. I had a conflict for this years autocross challenge. I'll be back up for King of the Mountain though.
Impressive 1st run! As long as morning session is in the 60’s-70’s degree range and you drive well, hot pavement of afternoon sessions will always be slower.
Drone footage was pretty awesome! Cool perspective. Hopefully you get all the issues sorted out soon and get back to winning.
Looked like an absolute blast, we all have an off day, glad you had fun, you will get it dialed in
Seeing that black C1 made me so happy. That must’ve been an absolute handful
It was so beautiful, I'm glad it was being raced. It did have a spin on day that got close to the wall 😬
I have been wondering what the deal is with the LCA being mounted at an angle in the k-member? It looks these cars have the front mount farther inboard than the rear. Something about antidive?
Honestly I'm not too sure what having the front one more inboard than the rear does. I think a lot of cars have this configuration. Antidive is only from the side view so vertical location between front and rear mount affects the antidive.
The whole reason for sequential shifter is to make a manual transmission like a automatic, so you only need to use the clutch engage 1st gear and reverse you don't need it for the other gears. Otherwise your defeating the purpose and you just spent $1500 for nothing. Go watch Ken Block drive the Hoonicorn.
You didn't understand the difference between a sequential shifter and sequential transmission. Research the hoonicorn more than just watch it.
Tough luck but it looked as if the steering was inconsistent. I'm watching your EPAS adventure with interest as I've currently got an '03 GT rack in my Fox but also a quick ratio manual rack on the shelf. Maybe a brake bleed will also help. Good luck tomorrow.
Yea that's the thing with piecing together a system from scratch and trying new things. Take time to properly figure it out. As far as the brakes I later found the caliper slide was frozen. That explains why that rear caliper was barely working.
Your not supposed to copy my last auto X session with all the cones lol, How did you like the feedback on the new steering setup?
Haha 😂 I need more time and tuning with it. I got some feedback from the company and I'm missing a wire connection in order to use the speed input. With the fixed value the steering was either too heavy or too light.
Hey Stephen, I'm having the same issue with my X2 ball joints. How thick was the shim stock you used?
It was brass sheet pack from Lowe's. I don't recall the thickness or if there was a couple different ones. I also put a couple weld tacks to ensure it stayed together.
Would this work for a car with all the things you took off in it
I don't see why not. Be good to double check with an electrical schematic
I’m glad you do these video because I didn’t know anything about the Prius steering. I have a Volvo pump in my F100 and built my own controller for how much pressure I want but this seems way easier to do. Will have to finish the video now to see how much room is in there for this setup
Thanks. I looked into the Volvo pump but decided it wasn't right for me and what I do with the car. I'm hoping I can get the tuning figured out with the Prius column to work great for racing. The Saturn Vue is the other commonly used electric column. I believe it's rotated opposite of the Prius so maybe one of them will work for you.
Hell yeah pretty slick work@
Thanks
Love your mods Mann! You're thinking out of the box. Not that it's novel but it's continual and gets you results.... Great work
Thanks. I want to try different stuff. Not everything may work out but won't know unless I try.
@@RinerAutomotive your wife, if I'm not mistaken, is getting Fast!
How did the ratio change work out? I just had a Golf R steering rack put in the Alltrack and it dropped from almost 3 turns lock to lock (linear) to just less than 2 turns lock to lock variable. Steering ramps up dramatically as you transition through 1/4 turn to 1/2 turn of the wheel. Will be wonderful at Autocross, my arms won’t be all crossed up anymore while trying to hit the paddle shifters.
I saw you just did that. I'll have to get more seat time before I know for sure but theoretically it should help. I'm now just over 2 turns lock to lock.
@@RinerAutomotiveWoot!
Very interesting, I wonder how it will feel, I hated my EPS on the 9th Gen civics I owned
That's the thing, every car is going to be set up different and have different EPS tuning. S550, Toyota 86, rx8 and many others have electric steering and are known to be great handlers
@@RinerAutomotive it wasn't the handling that I disliked, it was the non existent feedback, but this was a Honda
Ah gotcha. Yea that could be alignment as well as how the EPS is programmed.
Thanks Stephen. This will certainly help the Coyote or Ecoboost swap folks if they choose to avoid hydraulics altogether.
Ah for sure. That's a good point.
I live in the PNW where we're used to driving on wet roads 9 months a year. But it's never comfortable. Stephen, did you try the 1" master to see if brake feel improved?
I have installed the 1" MC. I like the feel of it a lot better.
I've considered the EPAS Performance kit as I have a Flaming River manual rack on the shelf. And that would just leave the alternator driven by the engine. But so far the $1,600 price tag has kept me away.
I completely agree that is too expensive for a kit that isn't bolt on and is very basic. From what I saw in their kit you need to fabricate your own column dash mounts. Then the control is only a potentiometer that means the amount of assist is adjustable but only at one value. As your vehicle speed changes the assist stays the same, so you either have too much up high or to little down low. There are better diy ways to do it, I hope as this becomes more popular better kits will come to market.
Excellent ABS troubleshooting summary: Reference voltage, resistance through the sensors, sensor signal/return, brake pedal voltage, self-test, etc. I'm considering an ABS install on my Fox Mustang and your series has been very helpful. Thanks.
Thanks! I'm glad it's helpful. I really like ABS for autocross or peace of mind for the street. It would be fairly easy to add to your Fox.
Did you end up running the rear at full pressure? Would it have worked just as well to just plug the stock valve and not install the adjustable one?
I'm not at full rear pressure. I think some kind of pressure reducing is required for the rear. Otherwise risk locking up the rears before the fronts.
THE TOYOTA 86 POWER STEERING IS WHAT I WANT TO TRY AND MAKE WORK!
I've heard really good things on those but they are harder to find in the junkyard
Surprised you didn't order a PiMPxs through Stinger Performance. It has all the bells and whistles you would need and it's a lot cheaper than an aftermarket standalone ECU.
The PiMPxs is a standalone ECU. I looked at it but to do the distributorless ignition setup that I did it was going to be $2500. The DIY Ford route was around $500
Nice job! The friggin XA PAX is killing me 😂
PAX is helping me 😁
car, and you both, are running, looking, and sounding Great!!
Putting in a head louvers doesn’t go against cam-t class ? The car still qualifies for cam-t class with this modification?
Yep it's allowed in CAM. CAM is pretty open in what is allowed
@@RinerAutomotive sweet thank you I ordered from race louvers with my scca discount they come this week for my 95 mustang excited to get it installed before the next autocross event the end of this month . Hopeing it really helps lower my engine bay tempts I drive the car to the event and run it and it gets incredibly hot in the engine bay with stock hood from the days work driving
It should really help with that. I can see the hot air escaping from my hood. But if you're overheating the engine then probably should take a look at your cooling system.
Mercedes om617 in my straight axle first gen runner , it’s a bit heavy, to be honest . Really happy with the way it pulls with double transfer cases and 4:88 gears , videos on my channel , check it out! Great video !!!
That is a great option. They are getting older and harder to find. Last time I looked there wasn't much aftermarket for them though.
So interesting, would you let me know program or analyzer which you show up in your video?
It's Performance Trends Suspension Analyzer
I put an electric column into v8 vt commodore (Australian sedan), and it wasn't powerful enough to lift the front end of the car due to the castor angle so it only assisted for the first half turn of the steering wheel. Front of the car was too heavy
Hmm that could be a concern, I run a high caster.
Yeah, something to think about. I certainly didn't 😂 I've now installed an electric/hydraulic pump and another hydraulic rack (as I de-powered my original rack for the electric column) and it runs sweet
Which pump?
Holden Astra electric/hydraulic pump. Similar to the one in your video, but sits upright. A lot of the drift guys over here run them with some guys using two plumbed in series
Ah yeah I've heard good things about that pump. However we didn't get them in the states.
Nicely done. How is the XTS caliper swap working out?
Working great!
I have a question on clearing the front/rear rotors. What offset rims should i be looking at?
That's hard to answer because offset doesn't define caliper clearance. It's something called X-factor which isn't widely advertised. I'd assume most 18" and larger wheels would have the brake clearance. Unfortunately it could be a trial and error process.
I’m no stranger to German cars, but even I won’t touch a Mini. It’s a shame they have the reliability they do because the original R53 Cooper S is so much fun to drive
I'm more of a VW person. they all have their own nuisances as I'm sure you know.
Unfortunately I have a lot of experience fixing Minis. Feel free to reach out if needed.
Didn't know that. Thanks. Any thoughts on the transmission hard 1-2 shift once oil is warm? Shifts fine when cold.
@@RinerAutomotive I’d start with a fluid change and check what the fluid coming out looks like before anything else. I always put whatever the correct-spec Redline fluid in them without issue.
That's where I'm starting. Fluid was just delivered today.
That speedo looks like something that belongs around Flavor Flavs neck!! Dropping seats is a common problem with my Corvair too.
Haha yes it does 😂
Excellent commentary! Unfortunately: It was timely! Have a very nice SN95 1995 SVT COBRA that was getting in need of an upgrade in suspension. The unfortunate part.was a recent Wipeout of the right hand side... taking out a brand new Continental all season staggered beautifully built DWS Plus w/ new mags. This the first all season ever run on the car. Normally have (3) full sets of wheels & tires mounted for each of my cars: A summer ultimate driving set. A summer drag radial set, , & now an all season that I had really learned to love. YES... GETS EXSPENSIVE When Dealing With Multiple Vehicles! So then forced into the Wipeout of just an expensive 6 month old purchase which will need to be replaced soon I forced myself into... still playing catchup monetarily... gonna upgrade my suspension. (Already had a good amount of bolt on added) now... looking into a Level 3 QA1 Complete Suspension Kit & /then my possible big brake kit. Guess my "Puppy" will have to wait??? Thanx for the (2) brake videos! J
Will this work if you have 20inch tires on new edge just curious
20" wheels will have plenty of clearance on barrel, but it depends on the spokes if it will clear the Caliper face. That's where most people have issue I think.
No shit it’s that simple 😂😂😂😂😂 fuck my overthinking brain
Hopefully you are still replying to comments since this is a year old now.... How are the sidewall stiffness different from each? I know the RT660's are known for being very stiff, thus giving great initial turn-in and high speed stability. I currently have the Yoko AD09's on my 718 GT4 which also have a stiff sidewall, and I love that feeling, but I read the Grassroots review of the CR-S and they say the sidewalls are kind of soft and softer than the Yoko A052's (which are also pretty soft).
The rear leg of your FLCA definitely failed from the torque induced by the swaybar. The only way to make this FCA design work is to mount the swaybar endlink along the geometric centerline of the forward FLCA link. This eliminates the torque.
I've actually redesigned the FLCA to fix this problem. Just haven't had the time to build it yet. I need a new sway bar though that will mount on the centerline. However, universal/racing sway bars are straight and the engine is in the way.
What did this 306 make for hp
I still need to get it correctly dynoed. I estimate in the 300-330 rwhp range
340 tuned
Do you have the links to the parts purchased from Amazon? I really like your set up!
Most of the parts were purchased from McMaster Carr. The cable I bought from Amazon already broke so I don't recommend that.
Looks like what I will be driving in Sunday, first time with brand new suspension and Firestone Indy 500 tires
Suspension 👍 Tires 👎
@@RinerAutomotive I won my class on Sunday, I'm not doing a full auto X schedule this year unfortunately so wanted something that would last a little longer
Congrats. Yea that makes sense and I would do the same.
Using 3rd gear was a smart pro move!😆 Another move would be to carry around a set of cheap narrow wheels with the narrowest size Continental Extreme Contact Sport 02 that fit on the wheels and have tall enough sidewalls to meet the load rating for the weight of your car. Why? Wide tires don't cut through standing water and Conti ECS are both less expensive than Michelins and are superior in resistance to hydroplaning. If it had been standing water at a National Tour, Pro Solo, or Nationals, then unhook one side of both swaybars and wire tie loose end so they don't break something.☔🌧🌈
Interesting. I would not have thought about narrow tires. Something I might look into for the future.
Also I wish I had thought about the 3rd gear trick for Ashley's runs. I remember doing it years ago but been fortunate to not run in the rain very much.
@@RinerAutomotiveI just added a 3rd paragraph with a trick for National type events to my original comments. Check it out!
