Reef Tank Update - Corals are Dying from Bristle Worms
Reef Tank Update - Coral Deaths. Corals are dying from bristle worms. I think I found out why my corals are dying. 20 gallon water change on the 125 gallon saltwater tank. I usually do a 10 gallon water change on the 125 gallon saltwater aquarium each weekend but with the higher nitrates I will be doing 20% weekly, totally 20 gallons for the water change, each weekend for the next month or more. I may stick with the 20 gallons each week moving forward for water changes. saltwater aquarium care and maintenance videos by rotter tube reef.

    I have a question that I've been searching for that I cannot find answers too. I have about 5 pieces of rock that was pulled from my buddy's tank. A couple of them had aptasia on them and as far as the other ones they did not however I was looking for a way to kill everything on it so I can reuse it which I came across your video. My question is If I follow your steps with what you did with that old rock how do I introduce it to my tank which my tank is fully cycled with sand and a couple pieces of good rock already in it. Can i just add the rock straight from the RODI bath that its been soaking in?

  • @Whaleydavey
    @Whaleydavey Před měsícem

    I agree to the conclusions of this video for the most part. However there are exceptions. I have a newish 80 gallon tank with 2 ocellaris clowns and a small goby and a corisse wrasse. There are 2 powerheads in the tank mixing the water continuously before it can go down into the sump, and I have a UV steriliser connected to the sump that is rated for a much bigger tank. I change the UV bulb every 6 months when it’s rated for 10 months. I know there is still Ich in the tank, but surely the UV has kept it too such a low level that its not too much of a worry for such a small number of fish. I think its easier for the free swimming theronts to find the overflow outlet leading to the sump than to find the fish. And even in the ocean there are Ich theronts everywhere, just in such low quantities that it doesn’t affect the fish. I think anyone with such a small bio load of fish and an overkill UV with overkill water flow might be able to get away with the ich in their tank. Maybe?? Nothing is for certain. I run the UV 24/7 and also do a 25% water change every week. I certainly wouldn’t do this if I added just a couple more fish as that would increase the Ich food source markedly. Anyway tank is still newish, so maybe I will get hit by ich to wipe out the tank and to prove me wrong. I do plan to get a quarantine tank soon so I can do it the proper way with copper power.

    • @ROTTERtube
      @ROTTERtube Před měsícem

      UV won't save anyone's tank. These things multiple at alarming rates by the thousands.

    • @Whaleydavey
      @Whaleydavey Před měsícem

      @@ROTTERtube I agree UV won’t save anyones tank from an outbreak. If you have a 150 gallon reef tank with 10 very large fish in the throes of a bad ich outbreak then no, - UV wont do anything. But that doesn’t mean it cant prevent one, when the conditions are very favourable IMO. With only 4 small fish in an 80 gallon with plenty of circulation continuously moving the water into the sump where a UV rated for 200 gallons is sterilising the theronts going through, I am hoping it does enough to stop the ich getting too much for the fish to cause an outbreak. The tank is only 80 gallons and at least 150 gallons is going through the UV every hour. Some “lucky” people do have tanks for a decade without an ich outbreak and having never treated with copper or a UV. At the very least I should have 80-90% less ich in my tank than these people. I will do it correctly with copper soonish - just have to organise the house properly.

    • @Whaleydavey
      @Whaleydavey Před měsícem

      @@ROTTERtube There is a CZcams video from “Cam the Fish Guy”, who owns an aquarium shop. He did manage to control an ich outbreak by installing a giant 6 foot industrial strength UV to a large home reef tank that had a ich outbreak. After 6 weeks, even the tangs showed no sign of ich. Again I agree with you that Copper is the only way to go for most people, and I want to get the QT installed very soon. But I think if you do super overkill with the size of your UV on a very very light bioload of fish - you can possibly prevent an ich outbreak by limiting its concentration. There is ich in the ocean after all. I know this wont work for 99% of people who want to keep more than 4 small fish in a relatively large tank, but there are exceptions. So I agree UV isnt a cure but it may aid in prevention if circumstances are favourable.

    I feel protein skimmers can take out good and bad nutrients... so I have never ran them on any of my tanks, and I use 2 cannister filters 405/6 fluval and 2 internal u3 filters on my current 180ltr tank

      Agreed, but so much water goes passed the skimmers I wouldn't worry about it.

    I enjoy my marine predator tank and community tank way more. Less maintenance and I like watching fish a lot more than corals. I have lost many coral over the years. I think It's a combination of having young kids and being too lazy to maintain a pristine reef. I still love all of the hobby and have a small reef with easy corals in it.

      Agreed. I love my corals, however, it's getting more difficult to keep torches for some reason and I love the torches. I spent too much money to have different combinations of corals die. I may just stick to zoanthids and see what happens. don't have the time to constantly try to figure out the swings for corals.

    Oh man I wouldn’t be right in the head if I didn’t check on my tank and enjoy it when I am awake and home. One thing I learned after many years….I keep my tank where I am around it family around it etc… the joy for me is watching my fish and coral grow and it’s so beautiful watching it happen. I will never forget Anthony calfo. He said great tanks take a lot of finesse. That’s keeping eye on tank anytime possible and often getting to know the quirks and habits of that system. The hard work pays off when the tank tells us love that part also. Cheers great video 🤙🌊🍻

    You're very discouraged clearly and understandbly so. A dog is not a pet. A dog is family and should not be compared to a fish. The reefing scene can be very frustrating as we are constantly trying to fix problems to get it to look pretty instead of actually enjoying the aquarium. The best solution for this I'd think is just to stick to a fowlr aquarium, minimum lights (4 hour max) and stop stressing out. There won't be algae or aiptasia or bubble etc.... I kept a fowlr for a long time with just 4 hours of minimum lighting and the water was always prestine with white sand and minimum stress and maintenance. Of course it's less colourful and more boring compared to a reef, but for a large aquarium like yours, you could keep many beautiful reef fishes! Don't give up!!!

      I'm not discouraged. I know my dogs are my family. There is a huge difference. This was a video asking if anyone felt the same as my brother. I was laying it out for newbies as well.

    Switching to Bolus has my tank on autopilot. My pH barely hits 8, my tank is full of SPS and alll are growing quickly,, now I spend 80% of tank time just appreciating the animals.

    I enjoy my reef every day! I got burned out on it for a while though. What I did was I revamped it, got new fish and coral, and watch rottertube reef! I’m all into it now. It is special and super bitchin that we got reefs in our homes, thousands of miles from the closest natural reef. It’s amazing.

    I sit in front of my aquarium every night before I go to bed. Even though it can be totally frustrating at times. It's just so satisfying troubleshooting and playing biologists at times to only reap the beautiful benefits that this hobby can and will bring if you just hang in there and remain patient.
