The worst treatment you can give to a cassette is to leave them in a car back when we used tape car stereo. Daily variations of temperatures summer and winter (especially if you'd live in Northern US or Canada) were rough on the tapes. Hence why the summer heat feeling like an oven inside a car created dilatation on the tape and the result was having a very bad sound quality after that. Always store any media at controlled temperature room, in the dark and without any moisture. ANY media can last decades and decades in your lifetime when proceeded that way.

I like to record myself reading books through a 60 year old Electro-voice mic with a tube preamp onto tape using a Marantz tape deck. I then run the tape through a small mixer with a USB output. I upload the audio to BandLab. So the analog sound is preserved and can be played infinitely without degradation

Keep your tapes in good condition, and they will sound like crap for years to come.

I have tapes from the early 80’s that sound fantastic,, it’s all about how much ya play them and how they are stored… a lot of my tapes from the 90’s my high school years that were played literally thousands of times have significant sound degradation and fade in and out as they play… so tapes do ware out ..

and i thought you had an educated answer they may still 'work' but they are a 'magnetic' format, and that will fade in time, losing the high end information also the hardware you play them on will also be affected by time, affecting 'wow and flutter' (tape speed control) play any tape, then play the same song from CD, and you will hear the huge difference in sound quality with the tape cassette sounding dull and muddy just put any cassette you don't like near any magnet to destroy it, ha ha

Tape quality all depends on how it was stored. Moisture and excessive heat are main problems tapes face. Buying used tapes can result in getting one that was not cared for.

with both vinyl records and cassettes care is very important, but both formats lose vibrancy after each play just from friction. at the same time both formats demand your attention. its not just throwing on a spotify playlist in the background.

I still have a bunch of self-recorded tapes from the early to mid 90s, mostly TDK SA-X or Maxell XLII-S. Still going strong. I also bought some new TDK SA tapes which were not so good though. They turned out to be manufactured by some other company which bought the rights. The peak level meter shows a discrepancy of -1 to -2 dB on the left channel for the better part of the total duration. Overall sound also wasn't satisfying, more suited for cheap car players or boom boxes. Hopefully some major tape brands from the old days will restart production of at least one of their more popular models in response to the recent uptick in demand (even if it's still modest overall). In any case, second hand prices for some of the better ones (and all Type-IV, no matter which one) are certainly crazy. 300+ Euros for a sealed C-90 Sony Super Metal Master is just nuts...
