Using lead instead of body filler
zhlédnutí 54KPřed 3 lety
Lead flexes well with the metal without cracking…. if you are slightly low on an edge or body line, lead provides a better edge that body filler….. We use especially in classic car restorations lead, it is more traditional and should last longer.

Tin or silver solder will work fine if you're scared of lead. Use wire mesh for patching if welding is not your option.
I do this too but use anodised zinc which works a treat. Far superior to filler but hard to do with more modern vehicles.
At last someone who knows how to lead load ,no edges bigger block dread naught blade and tallow fat thats old style loading not all this tinning up then washing it down well done
You are a real pro. That is exactly the way I did it sixty years ago. All the videos I've seen on CZcams on leading have no idea what they are doing you are a pro.
What is the gray stuff you are brushing on after its down tk bare metal and what do you use to sand with 120?
I plan on using this process to seal up work I did installing a sun roof I have a couple of questions what is the stuff you brushes on in the begining and where can I buy it from I bought five pounds of pure lead already I have a torch and the proper PPE and clothing just need some tips and pointers
Great work but when you broke out the DA I feared for your health.
Any thoughts on panel warpage with the amount of heat being applied?
Craftsmanship… Through and through…
What's gas is used, Acetylene or LPG?
Your experience comes through. Good work. You make it look easy.
How do u make sure lead does not poison you while working?
Love it, no music, no talking, just get to business...Awesome video...
Nice work
What color is that very nice work.
Rally green (79)
Good paint job and a different color than red or black.
Very nice 👍👍👍
Good god all these commitments on lead being bad for your health. Seriously all you have to do is not breathe in the dust when your sanding it! I’m not going to be Mr safety here but you shouldn’t breath dust from sanding bondo paint or anything else either. Just wear a mask when sanding and you will be just fine it’s as simple as that. Don’t believe all this crap about lead fumes or lead being absorbed by your skin! Like most things the media has drilled into us there is an element of truth to this, but it is lead compounds Iike TEL that can be absorbed and have fumes. Metallic lead is not this super dangerous thing these idiots are brainwashing us to believe! Not to go off topic but the crap about mercury is even worse! You can drink metallic mercury and you won’t absorb it! There are lots of nasty and dangerous things that we use every day, lead isn’t one of them! Just don’t eat the lead and don’t breath the dust when you sand lead and you will be fine!
Why in the world would someone rebuild a 307. One of the worst engines Chevrolet ever built.
Lies man, it ain’t no power house but it’s by far not the worst.just a set of 58 cc 305 heads ,4bbl ,cam swap & these lil engines come alive……I can attest to that.
I have 305 head on my 307 and I'm running nitrous on a stock bottom end. I am making just over 400. Car weighs 2800 steel unibody and can walk 5.0 coyotes
Sometimes I get tired of people just talking too much. If I can watch the process at this rate I learn so much faster. Great video!
What did you use to fuse the lead
It's called leading butter. but if he is not using lead free solder I wouldn't sand on it, only file.
They stop doing that in the US a long time ago it causes cancer in a short time.
Switch over to tin or bismuth, problem solved.
Amazing heat control nice work
Incredible workmanship! 👍👍
Holy shit that guy is fast😂
awesome
If its not the original panel primed and painted on the surface filler is filler use bondo much safer theres a reason lead filler use died out brother
Well that's one way to get lead poisoning
🙋🏼♂️Boa noite irmão olha USA proteção aí no olho aí para não perder a visão fazer a solda sem a proteção é perigoso👍🏻🇧🇷
Good idea.
Too bad we can’t see anything
bad exampol. hahaha

Does the flux eat away at the metal over time?
No sir!
You can clean the flux away....What is the problem?
Belleza😍😍😍
😍😍😍
Beautiful work! I’m still amazed at the repair work you all did with my 911!
Thank you Noe!
Will the tin in the lead pass the magnet test
What are you useing to spread it out in your hand
If you are a true bodyman there is no filler of any kind ..you get straight or so close to it that nothing more than a few coats of primer will fill in the lows.
If you want to go to that effort with a late model F150 tailgate, go for it. ROFLMAO
Bullshit if you want something perfect you use filler
@@sicknick5882 no not in my crowd. ..perfect is getting it so straight you don't need filler but the welding skills needed to do accomplish this are way beyond your comprehension I'm sure .lol. and cost is not an issue with what we do either..I'm willing to bet we have spent more money and time in the door jambs of a classic car than you have on the entire body of one .we ship hotrods all over the world including Japan ..anything from ratrods to Harleys and even planes and helicopters being we have two ourselves...so ya apples and oranges that's the difference
@@georgealmeida7382 LMAO nobody cares dude.
@@billd.akaevylaz754 nobody that drives junk cares like you but the rest do
Real healthy for you ! Not
its really skillful when you do it on a side panel. that takes controlled heat and talent.
Glad to see lead repair. But why the speed show?
it would take too long
Strong coffee!
I'm confused, are you welding without eye protection and bare handing it immediately after? How is this possible?
Good for Lazy People and those with no Leg Strength ?
👍
That's the only way to do body filler. It's not that easy to do it as it looks in the video. For classic cars restorations it's a shame to use epoxy. That's for average Joe.
filler of any kind is average Joe lol
@@georgealmeida7382 No. If you have pitting you put led filling. That's better than cutting and welding a new piece.
When I weld in a piece it requires zero filler other than primer at most and heats the metal less than you do using lead so your actually making the surrounding area worse by using lead.. Also you can control the reaction of steel with heat and also how quickly you cool it after it's been heated almost anything you can fill with lead I can make perfect with nothing other than proper heat andits placement and the rate of cooling ..iin other words a torch a water hose and a hammer ...will do a lot of bodywork in the right hands . Last time I checked new metal and zero filler was better than pitted metal filled with lead so I beg to differ but if your not skilled enough to weld in pieces and without having to use filler afterwards then ya go ahead and use lead .Ive never left any distortion that could not be flattened with nothing more than couple coats of primer but manipulators of metal with the skills needed to do do that are few and far between these days. so far in the last 40 yrs there hasn't been any sheet metal part Could not duplicate by hand the same or even better than the original. There are bodymen ,tinsmiths ,blacksmiths, forgers and fabricators( me)..all others will have to either replace it or fill it.
@@georgealmeida7382yeah no.want a new panel or part of a panel fabricated, then pay repair or fab prices. Otherwise you're getting the ol pulled mostly out with filler
But lead IS body filler.
Don’t think anyone could it better than this guy.
I do. Gene Winfield. But, Gene is 95 years old and has been doing it a lot longer.
