VOA #Amharic Interview about the teaching of #Amharic at UC Berkeley

I had the privilege of being interviewed by VOA #Amharic for the third time. This time we talked about my #teaching experience at #University of #California, #Berkeley.
#Language, power, economy and politics are all interdependent. One impacts the other. So, it's vital to teach, develop and widespread one's language. Amharic is one of the most widely spoken and prominent languages in Africa. It has rich literary and cultural wealth, and teaching it to more people, more particularly the younger generation in the Diaspora, will enable us to give access to that literary and cultural wealth.
I thank VOA and Journalist Habtamu Seyoum for the interview opportunity.

A prairie dog is a common animal in Colorado. Rodent is the general name for the different types/species of rodents, and rodent in Amharic is አይጠ መጎጥ (ayTe megoT).

This is crazy unneeded loan words in Amharina. Also since when is Selam arabic????? Selam is Ge'ez and Ge'ez is older than Amhariñya, arabic comes from the much older Ge'ez and perhaps it's ancient sister Sabaean. True arabic is old and so do proximity after it developed also influenced Ge'ez but Ge'ez is ancient it's other basic word association shows this is no arab introduction. True also that the Nabatean North influenced Arabic as well but it's roots are Itobiyian (Ethiopic). That also means Eritrean ( MidreeBariyian)

#Correction: Is there such a thing? Yes, I later found out that there is a term or concept of 'cross-language homophony' but it is a subject of study for linguists. It is not a common thing and it is not taught for language learners. As I explained it in the recording, I am trying to indicate that this can help to relate or associate words across languages and help your learning of the other language.

Errata: The Ethiopian year begins on September 11 and ends on September 10, not 7. I have said September 7 in my talk but that was a slip of tongue. Similarly, the Ethiopian Calendar is not actually called the Julian Calendar but it could be similar or had connections. It is the Ethiopian Calendar!
