    Nice video of a great locomotive. Years ago we rode behind her out of Buffalo, New York. Great trip on the former NKP Road. As well built and restored as she is, the CEO’s and Wall Street investors should see an opportunity to enhance their system public relations by affording the public the opportunity to share the experience of mainline steam passenger trips through out the Summer season.

    DPUs are a mixed bag. I'm near the A line that CSX operates. A year plus a bit ago, I noticed a freight stopped on the main. Turns out it was going into the many mile long siding south of Four Oaks. The reason it was stopped? A pair of pull-aparts. One of which was in front of the DPU (many cars ahead) and one behind (several cars back)--- Figure about a 1 1/2 mile long train where couplers got pulled out of their pockets, and or had a broken knuckle. About 1/4 of the train was in the siding. The failure happened at about 5:30 or 6, and the train started moving again at 8 or 9 that evening. They had to call for help from the maintenance yard about 50 miles north. They were trying to figure out if it was the ptc or engineer error last I heard. That said.. Trains have stopped blocking Four Oaks and its 4 crossings several times when they had to reboot their locomotives to get the PTC hooked again... After 20 minutes, that intermodal finally started moving. The passenger service that was supposed to go by Four Oaks got a significant delay. (And on the pull apart, there was no way around the mess...) That said, I've been on Amtrak more than once years ago, where the train actually arrived EARLY in Chicago. caused the folk in the Ascela Lounge to have heart attacks....

  • @daniellewis1789
    @daniellewis1789 Před měsícem

    Your entire tirade about track conditions entirely missed the point - Wendover was referring to long trains and slow trains and short sidings, not track conditions.

  • @daniellewis1789
    @daniellewis1789 Před měsícem

    You clearly have no operational experience if you think the present system is robust or somehow not fragile.

  • @daniellewis1789
    @daniellewis1789 Před měsícem

    Erratic, inconsistent, and whatever scheduling definitely describes PSR, it describes "not having track slots" when low single digits trains operate on the line, etc.

  • @daniellewis1789
    @daniellewis1789 Před měsícem

    You're just flat wrong about high speed rail in the US, and about who owns the infrastructure keeping Amtrak from running faster service.

  • @daniellewis1789
    @daniellewis1789 Před měsícem

    I think the first point you've actually correctly corrected was the six class 1 operators.

  • @daniellewis1789
    @daniellewis1789 Před měsícem

    Your technical points on deregulation don't counter Wendover's points at all.

  • @daniellewis1789

    You keep agreeing with Wendover and then saying they're wrong somehow.

  • @daniellewis1789
    @daniellewis1789 Před měsícem

    Public transit doesn't have a mechanism to capture the value it creates external to the station. Positive externalities are Econ 101 and a basic part of building modern (aka since the invention of mass transit) cities. This is why governments subsidize passenger rail, because it is a net benefit. Frankly your refusal to understand this calls into question any other opinion you might have about passenger rail.

  • @daniellewis1789
    @daniellewis1789 Před měsícem

    Building out the western network with land grants reflects a shockingly liquid capital environment, with substantial support from the feds and the state. Which was Wendover's point.

  • @daniellewis1789
    @daniellewis1789 Před měsícem

    A core part of a railroad monopoly was, for about a century, providing twin benefits to the public - movement of cargo and movement of people. If a railroad owner isn't willing to provide both, why should they be allowed to benefit from literal taking of other people's property (emenent domain and land grants used to build their ROW).

  • @daniellewis1789
    @daniellewis1789 Před měsícem

    Just getting started and you're massively missing the Wendover points so far. Cars in and of themselves might just be horse and carts writ large, but taking other people's money to build out a national paved road system is definitely not parity with the horse or a level playing field with the railroad.

    Nice review! However I do not share your pessimism about the future of rail passenger service. I believe we are on the cusp of a rennisance in North America. Brightline is the biggest shining star at the moment, but contrary to popular belief California high-speed is making solid progress as well to name just two... Bottom line is that the younger generation wants passenger service if ti is accessable, affordable, and ON TIME!

    Thank you sir for your great video explaining the decline of passenger rail service in America. You explained all the factors that led to the near demise of passenger trains in the U.S.A. so well. I am a Canadian, and most of the reasons our passenger trains in the Dominion vanished are the same as in the United States. only quibble I have with your chat was that you never mentioned how the U.S. Postal Service took mail off the passenger trains. The big cuts to that were in 1967, loss of the mail contracts hit the American railway's passenger trains hard. The same thing happened in Canada, Royal Mail was last carried on passenger trains in 1973. I like how you explained how many human beings would be involved in a passenger train booking & journey, with your NYC-Jersey City to Chicago & beyond example. I worked for Canadian National Railways passenger department & Via Rail in Vancouver, British Columbia from June 1975 until I retired in May of 2020. In Vancouver, I worked at the CN Station & later in the early Via Rail era at the CP Waterfront Station, as a redcap baggage porter or a station services baggage handler.. I often used a condensed version of what you talked about in your video, to explain to new hires in a quicl talk about why & how passenger train service declined. The CN Station in Vancouver BC has seen American passenger trains since 1965, when the next door Great Northern Railway Station was abandoned & the GN negotiated with CN to have their trains moved to CN Station. GN's passenger service became Burlington Northern's passenger service, then Amtrak's, which I am sure you know. However, even in the 1970s many of my co-workers thought that Amtrak was the only American passenger rail provider EVER, even in the past. CN & later Via Rail ticket agents at the CN Station Vancouver also do Amtrak ticketing. I remember once about 25 years back, one of our Via ticket agents was griping about booking a Vancouver BC. to San Diego, Cailfornia ticket on the Amtrak computer at her wicket. I told her, be thankful you were not having to do those bookings the last year that the freight railroads operated those passenger routes in April of 1971! I told the Via Rail lady that then, as a CN ticket agent with no computer & either a telex machine or long distance phone calls to use, that she'd have to book a Burlington Northern Railway train ticket from Vancouver B.C. to Seattle, Then either an ex-Northern Pacific or ex- Great Northern Burlington Northern passenger train from Seattle's King Street Station to Portland's Union Station, or a Union Pacifc train from Seattle's Union Station to Portland's Union Station. Then a Southern Pacific passenger train to Los Angeles, changing trains in either Oakland / San Francisco or Martinez, California. Also, you'd best warn your passengers how dire the SP passenger train service from Portland to LA would be! Then to book your Vancouver BC to San Diego, CA passenger on last lap of trip, you'd have to issue the a Santa Fe RR ticket from Los Angles Union Station to the San Diego Santa Fe station. My dear now sadly no longer with us Dad started working as a ticket agent for Canadian National Railways in Winnipeg, Manitoba in the year 1952, at the CN Union Station in " Winterpeg". With Great Northern Railway trains to / from the CNR Winnipeg Station, Dad told me he sold many tickets into the U.S.A.. Dad told me if there were Pullman Company sleeping car tickets involved, that the Pullman tickets were long, long strips of cardboard like paper stock. Dad also told me that after Minneapolis/ St. Paul that he'd offer passengers a ticket to Chicago on the Milwaukee Road, Burlington Route or Chicago North Western. Most passengers MSP-CHI just wanted the best fare & didn't care about which railway, but Dad told me some passengers only liked the Milwaukee Road & no CB&Q nor CNW for them! And other combinations of railways that particular passnger liked or disliked. Then once in Chicago, if the passenger was going elsewhere, more headaches for Dad.I do remember one time Dad told me he booked a passenger from Buffalo to Hoboken on the Lackawanna RR, on the Phoebe Snow train, at passenger's insistance. Dad asked a senior ticket agent what the big deal was about the Phoebe Snow & the older CNR fella told Dad about the lady that rides on 'The Road Of Anthracite". Anyway, sorry that I prattled on. Keep up the good work on your CZcams channel! I am a subscriber & always enjoy tour topics & chat.

    Talgo II built by acf was unidirectional (like the predecessor test units). Only two sets operated in Spain until the 1970s. Meanwhile in the 1960s Talgo came up with a bidirectional system on the Talgo III, and that was built in a variant with changeable gauge that went to France. Around 1980 Talgo changed the manufacturing method, using welded aluminium profiles, and introduced the Talgo Pendular which tilts in curves. In later years the company went into high speed trains with the Talgo 350 and Avril (both of which have separate power cars like a TGV), but also made some night trains and "higher speed" intercity trains including a dual-power, dual-gauge set for Spain. Talgos were delivered to Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Russia, Saudi-Arabia and Egypt; one was tested in India but that was not followed by an order. They are currently building intercity push-pull trains for Germany and Denmark which have the advantage of level boarding from most platforms, making them accessible to wheelchair users without needing a lift. (And the cab car looks more like a locomotive and less like a duck!)
