I’ve been preserving my GameCube games and are on my PC to be played on emulators and I do agree that physical media can be better than digital. I support gaming preservation and will do to this day.

Looking back, I feel like I could've done a much better job with that image, and I regret the usage of the terms "mistake" and "replacement", especially the latter since it implied the original versions of these games could or should be replaced, which was not my intent. Anyways, very good and interesting video. I will say, the topic of licenses and legal issues preventing games from getting official rereleases reminded me of how fucked the Pac-Man series is in this regard. Bandai Namco not having the full rights to Ms. Pac-Man, one of the franchise's most prominent and iconic characters, has resulted in the majority of the games in the first 3 decades of the franchise's history being in limbo, unable to be rereleased unless alterations are made to remove Ms. Pac-Man. This isn't too hard for some games like Pac-Land, which require simple sprite edits, something they've already done for Arcade Archives and Pac-Man Museum+. But what about games that have Ms. Pac-Man in a more prominent role, with more elaborate sprites, or 3D models, or appearances in pre-rendered FMVs? Bandai Namco probably won't want to go through all that effort and would rather just remake the game from scratch, like they did with Pac-Man World, or forget about it, leaving it alone and not rereleased. This would already suck if it were just a game or two like with Sonic 3, but like I said, this one issues effects the majority of games in Pac-Man's back catalogue, *especially* the games from the 2000s, which also happen to be some of the most beloved in the series. It really sucks.

I mean, a GOOD and HIGH QUALITY PC port pretty easily keeps games preserved almost indefinitely. With Microsoft running Windows into the ground year by year, Linux is slowly picking up the slack. But overall it's a very good solution for most games. Though it's up to the publisher and developer to even make a good port, or make any port at all. For now we're kinda relying on pirates keeping games from vanishing forever lol.

A company could just sell the roms in their website. The buyers (us) could use any fan created emulator to run them. Of course Nintendo would never do that, but there so many others that could.

On the thing with revisions of games, the first version of Castlevania 1 has a gamebreaking glitch where it can spawn too many sprites for the console to handle and causes it to freeze. The Castlevania legacy collection uses the first version so your options for dealing with for, example, the hallway before the death boss are a lot more limited. As always, emulating or using OG hardware + flashcart is more worthwhile

Every with literally every point. The HD version makes some minor QoL improvements, but there are more bad changes than good. The immersion breaking changes are really what kill it.

Orginal hardware generally plays the best but emulator is the cheap easy way to play pretty much everything it runs ok but I always feel there's something off when I emulate

I emulate because I don't want the back of my TV to look like this guy's. And because the controller cords would barely reach my couch, if they could reach at all. Oh, you mean they make third-party wireless adapters? Sorry, but on top of modding, all this gets way too expensive when you're so hell-bent on using the original hardware. Oh yeah, and because f*ck Nintendo and their anti-emulation, anti-preservation stance. That alone is reason enough to emulate.

So my first Zelda game was ocarina of time, and while that is a great game, twilight princess is my fav Zelda. And one of my fav games of all time too. It is just such a good story which I feel like the series was missing till this point. Like wind waker had a good story, but I feel like it lacked in the character department. I think tp excelled with characters cause they focused more on a few and really developed them.

now that I've been playing older games with the retrotink 4k, seeing sharp original pixels looks pretty awful to me. I like some of the most modern texture packs. stuff like metroid prime remastered are excellent. older and more amateur ones are pretty awful. games like zelda 1 I've played SO many times that getting a different experience is fine to me. I think it's very cool that we have options. I also have the luxury of being able to play these games any way I want: on original hardware, in emulators, in recompiles, in professional remasters, etc.

I remember being excited for the HD version as I hadn't played the Wii version since at least 2007, probably 2006, but then I played it and it just felt "wrong", I wasn't able to really pinpoint what felt wrong but it made me give up after only a few hours.

I agree with you. Except the graphics. I think the graphics have been upgraded by a lot.

The way you described the joystick on the gamecube controller was very accurate. First time i used a gamecube controller at a friends house i thought the joystick was broken since it felt so weird compared to my playstation controllers at the time. Very unique feeling to it.

I don't really like to do that "I want to make it feel like the original" because I never played the original, I'm not from those ages, I never got those consoles. So I would choose make it the highest thing it can be, if it looks something wrong, well that's an old ass game so that's why. Although I don't know if I would bother getting textures, maybe if I can get my ass to try Mario 64

2:15 I'm not working at Nintendo, but I think the reason for this is that they wanted you to be able to control in-game menus with the DPad, and just mapping the DPad to the Analog stick in the emulator was easier than patching the game to read DPad inputs in menus.

Most of the texture packs I see are just dumps from some AI upscaler that usually has some kind of visual issue, especially with anything non-organic like text. At this point the only time I look into updating textures is if something in the base game is noticeably bad/worse than most other assets. Or maybe just fixing the main characters like the batman example. Although I did see a few years back people were finding the original source images for Mario 64. Might be interesting to see that with higher res textures, and I doubt the source images were that high res to begin with for the time they were from.

I'll let y'all in on a little secret as to how speedrunners get good at games quicky: We cheat! And by that I mean we use hacks, mods, savestates, etc to practice much more efficiently than you could on a vanilla copy of the game.

*Fun Fact:* Super Mario Galaxy 2 _actually was_ going to be in this game, theres a bunch of object and misc files from SMG2, but it seems they stopped working on it very early, due to not alot being ported.
