I'm a Lithuanian myself.

I was studying at universityat the time and one course was European nationalism. We followed the January events closely that month, heard each radio station being re transmitted by the BBC and then one by one going off the air. Little did I know I would end up moving to Lithiania in 95, marrying a Lithuanian and living there for 12 years. Our daughters are Lithuanian/Scottish,, born in Lithuania. Lithuania is a strong and proud country and people. Tuo metu studijavau universitete ir vienas kursas buvo Europos nacionalizmas. Tą mėnesį atidžiai stebėjome sausio įvykius, girdėjome, kaip BBC transliavo kiekvieną radijo stotį, o paskui vieną po kitos išeina iš eterio. Nežinojau, kad 95-aisiais persikelsiu į Lietuvą, ištekėsiu už lietuvio ir gyvensiu ten 12 metų. Mūsų dukros lietuvės/škotės, gimusios Lietuvoje. Lietuva yra stipri ir išdidi šalis ir žmonės.

So basically, our country(Lithuania) was invaded by russian soldiers and killed 14 or alot more people. They wanted to take over of the television tower so Russia can be with Lithuania. Respect for the brave people who stood and here hpw they survived Estonia Latvia And Lithuania held hands so when 1991 January 13th came or like when its January 13 if you are a lithuania citizen you should know that we have to light up candles 8:00-10:00 to support the people who died in that time. And thats an actual rule in Lithuania. Yes my parents weren't standing there cuz my mom was 2 years old and my dad was 11 they are still living to this day gladly but russia is just brutal, rude and selfish. Just dont type in the comments that there are people in Russia that are good. Yes i know this fact, by the way they were sent to prison, beated up, shot because they wanted peace in the world who doesnt just agree with me?

Bravo on a wonderful live stream symposium presenting so many wonderful speakers, and how great that several of the guests also focused on the work of Dutch Honorary Consul Jan Zwartendijk. Jan Zwartendijk risked his life by issuing 2,345 fake visas to Curaçao, and Chiune Sugihara risked his job issuing transit visas through Japan. One would not have been successful without the other, so both men need to be celebrated together. As a 2nd generation survivor whose grandfather was issued visas by BOTH men, it’s wonderful to see Sugihara honored, but . I would have been delighted to see a photo of both men on stage. Celebrating a Sugihara Year only, leaves out half the story, and is thus a distortion of the facts. Sugihara has been promoted for years by his family and government (four museums, two full-length films, numerous books, documentaries, street names, stamps, even an asteroid has been named after him) while the modest family of Jan Zwartendijk have remained quiet all these years. As a result, one half of the team has been in the spotlight, while the other half remains in the shadows. What easier way to undo this misrepresentation of the facts than by starting here and now. I propose a Jan Zwartendijk Year in 2021. And what better place to set the historical record straight than at the "Sugihara House," the Kaunas museum honoring half of this heroic team. The renamed Sugihara-Zwartendijk House could finally present the full story of these saviours, as well as the other heroes such as Ambassador de Decker, Yaakov Ederman, Rabbi Moshe Zupnik, Wolfgang Gudze, Rabbi Shlomo Wolbe, and further along the way but outside of Kaunas, M. de Jong, Ambassador Tadeusz Romer, Consul de Voogd, Dr. Kotsuji and Consul-General Saburo Nei. Few of the refugees could have reached safety without the tireless efforts of these good people for each step of their rescue along the way.
