Should You Upgrade Batocera???
#batocera #upgrades #retrogaming
I get asked if you should upgrade to the latest Batocera version almost every time a new version is released. Unfortunately, it's hard for someone to answer this for you. Everyone has different retro gaming needs and different hardware setups. So I've put together a list of simple questions to help guide you down the path of deciding whether or not you should upgrade.
Keep in mind that this video doesn't include any reasoning related to software/network security. However you may still want to consider those factors when choosing if you should upgrade.

Batocera 39 to 40 Upgrade
zhlédnutí 1,9KPřed 28 dny
#batocera Good news! Batocera 40 has been released and the upgrade from 39 to 40 went without a hitch. Well, the actual upgrade worked at least. I still need to test everything out and see if all my systems are still working. Keep in mind that the system I've upgraded is pretty heavily customized, so I fully expect some things to break. One thing I've already noticed is that the EmulationStatio...

It barely does any damage now and probably isn't worth it. My first run of the DLC was much more balanced for the most part, so I tried out a really broken build for the second run. • @eldermillennialvideogames
      @eldermillennialvideogames Před 5 dny

      A while back I think I was able to get Suyu working. You can download a Linux appimage for it, so it was easy to just drop in on a system that already had Yuzu. Pretty sure I just renamed it to whatever the Yuzu appimage was called and it just worked. I'm not really a fan of Suyu and never really messed around with Sudachi though. Once both of their githubs were shutdown I kind of lost interest in both of them. I mostly use Ryujinx-Avalonia now with the final version of Yuzu being kind of a back up for any games that don't run as well with Ryujinx. Those two cover my needs pretty well. At the end of the day for me if they don't play a game, I'll just play it on my actual Switch.

      I used to grab them just outside of Fort Slacktide. I think there was one near the entrance that's pretty easy to grab, then you just warp back and grab it again. Or grab it once and buy the shell insurance for it (that's probably the quicker method). With the insurance it's just a matter of spawning with the banana and putting it on your fork, then entering one of the snail shells again to have it spawn again on your back.

    Hmm thanks for the video. My configuration of v39 looks pretty much similar (ryzen 5800h with radeon vega rx8 and 16gb) and i‘m looking forward to update batocera to v40 and yuzu switch to a newer version (mine looks older than yours) and update it to fw 18.1. and product keys. My issues in batocera 39: - issues with the amd Radeon rx8 vulkan mesa driver (24.0). Many switch games are black screen and also some xbox/xemu games crash on 39, while they were working on 38. - yuzu outdated, often black screen, maybe the same issue as above, maybe yuzu version to old and fw 18 missing. - ppsspp performance as libretro is crazy slow. Was good on 38. Have to use standalone now. - mame and fb neo didn’t accept my custom shaders and also all custom game settings were gone after i updatet mame and fb neo emus. Wtf? Why did they renamed mame2003+ and others? Trying to clone my drive with batocera, stitcher oder win32diskimage. What is best?? Then make backup of userdata before, then update to 40, then flatpack yuzu and riyunx and correct all the little issues on the system (Resolution, ps2 bios, yuzu…) Will it work and will my rpcs3- snes-, dc-, dolphin, ps1-4 and yuzu game settings and maps still be there??

    • @eldermillennialvideogames
      @eldermillennialvideogames Před 25 dny

      You're doing the right thing making a backup first. All of my settings were left in-tact after the v40 upgrade. I had to move my Singe games out of the Daphne roms folder and into the new Singe folder, but that was pretty much it. The first couple of times I launched certain emulators like rpcs3 and pcsx2, the games ran at extremely low framerates, but it just...got better on its own. I didn't do anything, but the games now run just fine. I'm still not 100% sure what that was all about. I still feel like all my games take a few seconds longer to launch on v40, but I'd really need to do a side by side comparison to make sure I'm not just imagining things. I'd have to check, but I'm pretty sure I'm running the fw 18 for Switch emulation. I basically only really ever update the fw and keys when I add a brand new game that needs it. I mostly run Ryujinx Avalonia now, but still use the last version of Yuzu for some games where it works better.

      @@eldermillennialvideogames Many thanks for the detailed reply. Your feeling about v40 starting some emulators slower is probably right. Good to hear it‘ll speed up after some time (😂haha how on Earth…??). I have to update batocera and yuzu (to fw 18.1), because i really got mesa driver issues in batocera with my vulcan driver / graphic card. Xemu on v39 quits on so many games with black screen and i think it’s also the issue with so many ps3 and switch games. It‘s a known problem for my pc configuration (trigkey speed s5) but worked in batocera 38 flawlessly. I heard it was fixed for batocera 40, so i have to go for it. Also there are now several switch games needing at least 17.0.1 or 18.0.0 or 18.0.1 (i use 17.0.0). But i‘m scared to update 😂. First i‘ll make a backup of all userdata. Then i‘ll clone my 2tb external / portable v39 drive incl. everything. But don’t know the best method. Clone/move via the option in emustation? With Etcher or gparted or Diskimager32? Directly to a new drive or do i have to write an image first (uhh… 2TB). And then update the old drive to v40? Do i have enough system partition space (8GB, 5GB free) for V40? I can‘t expand the partition because i already have the share section partition full (1.9TB). I have no problem with some settings, bios, resolution etc. gone but i’m asking myself if i can flatpack yuzu and riuynx again on V40 in a newer version and then update yuzu to fw18 and keys. Will i loose all my emu- and gamesettings?? I mean all the emulators. Maps, Updates, Mods, Scrapes, custom settings, shader etc.. Yours are all working well??? Would be a nogo 😭

      Yeah, the link to the offline install method is dead now. It was removed from the Internet Archive after Nintendo filed a takedown request. I'm sure it was because it contained the app images for Yuzu and YuzuEA. Honestly it was up for longer than I thought it would be. I will probably re-upload just the installer script at some point and it'll be up to the individual to provide the app image files. I have to think about it carefully though cause I don't want to end up in the sights of such a litigious company like Nintendo.

    • @eldermillennialvideogames
      @eldermillennialvideogames Před měsícem

      For me, yes it did require the .vbs file. This was my experience: My vpx table: The Simpsons (Data East 1990).vpx ROM file: simp_a27.zip When I would start the game, the table would load and I could press the button to insert coins, but the game would never actually start and let me play. When I checked /userdata/system/configs/vpinball/vpinball.log I noticed that it wasn't finding the correct ROM file name: INFO [3752] [VPinMAMEController::put_GameName@627] newVal=simp ERROR [3752] [VPinMAMEController::put_GameName@644] Game name not found. So to get the .vbs file, I ran the following on the batocera CLI: cd /userdata/roms/vpinball/ (Just make sure you cd into the same directory where your Simpsons vpx file is) /usr/bin/vpinball/VPinballX_GL -extractvbs The\ Simpsons\ \(Data\ East\ 1990\).vpx (Adjust the filename to whatever your .vpx is named) The last command above gave me the .vbs file. Then I just had to edit it and change one thing. There was a line near the top of the file that started like this: Const cGameName="simp" I changed that to look like: Const cGameName="simp_a27" Then saved the file. After that the table worked fine for me and I was able to play it. In conclusion, you will need the .vpx file, the pinmame rom file in the appropriate location, and possibly the .vbs if you run into the same problem I did.

You're basically just removing all the files put in place by the installer. Just be extra careful with the "rm" commands and like always, make sure you have a recent backup of your system before messing around with deleting anything. Or just be ready to re-install Batocera if anything goes wrong.

    Mr. Elder Millennial Video Games. I recently became interested in pinball games. There are several pinball game emulators out there that are confusing. There are several such as Pinmame and Future Pinball. Can these start the same rom (table?)? There are many emulators for consoles such as SNES and Genesis, all of which can boot their respective roms. Similarly, which ROM for a pinball game should I use, such as Pinmame or Future Pinball? Also, is there a pinball game emulator with the best reproducibility?

    • @eldermillennialvideogames
      @eldermillennialvideogames Před měsícem

      If you're just getting into pinball then I would suggest cutting your teeth on something like Future Pinball. In Batocera it is fairly easy to get up and running. Just find some Future Pinball tables (.fpt files) and put them in Batocera's roms/fpinball directory. That should be enough to get you up and running. Personally I prefer the look and experience of using Visual Pinball. Although Visual Pinball can be much more advanced and time consuming to set up. Many of the recreations of classic pinball machines for Visual Pinball will also require PinMAME ROMs in addition to the .vpx table files. Some may even require special configurations in the form of .vbs files. Whether or not the table you want will require some or all of these elements will require some research on your part. Basically with Future Pinball you can likely download a collection of FP tables and probably have most of them working without too much effort. Visual Pinball is the opposite. You will most likely need to think about which specific tables you want, research their requirements, and then work on implementing them one by one. I think VP is superior especially for those of us looking to recreate past real life pinball experiences. But yeah, it can be a lot of work.

      The setup for this has changed slightly since I made this video. The fightcade curl command from the batocera.pro site now installs it as part of an Arch Container. To install you run the curl command and pick the "Recommended" option to install the container. This will put a new ES menu option called ArchLinux or just Linux. After choosing that, select the Fightcade option. If you get a message about the version being out of date after logging in, run the curl command for fightcade again and this time select the option from the menu to upgrade the container (this might take a while). Afterwards, it should work.

    Dude hello again instead of messing with the terminal you could have done it in 10 seconds on a computer with windows and copied it to batocera... why did you choose this difficult method. i am really confused. can you please explain it in a simpler way on windows

    • @eldermillennialvideogames
      @eldermillennialvideogames Před měsícem

      I don't find the method I used to be difficult at all. The USB method requires physical access to the machine to plug in the USB whereas I can do my method from any machine on my network in whichever room I happen to be in. The steps should be pretty much the same for Windows as anything else. Windows has had an SSH client built into the command prompt since version 10, so typing "ssh root@batocera" should let you log into your Batocera machine. From there the steps should be the same as in the video. Or like you said, you could just copy everything to a USB stick and move it over to Batocera that way. There's always more than one way to accomplish a task.

      I can only say that those are the steps that worked for me. It should just work after copying the .so file to the appropriate place in the filesystem, editing the ES systems config, and saving the overlay. Are other 3DS games not loading with the core set to "libretro:citra" or is it just Omega Ruby? And they all work fine with the core set to the default citra one? The citra_libretro.so file in the IA link shown in the video should have an md5 hash of 1a201b527d60cee6dcad27b4e12d2830. If yours is different, you may have a bad download. I can confirm that Omega Ruby should work fine. I was just able to launch it successfully using the libretro:citra core on my Batocera PC. You don't really need to press a button for Pagurus to eat the banana. He will grab the banana if you are wearing it as a shell with his attack. I like to duck into the shell right as this happens, but I don't think you have to do that. It's more about waiting for the right attacks to come and being in close enough range for him to grab it and eat it. I think he can grab it on both the red and blue (the little warning icons) attacks that he does.

    • @eldermillennialvideogames
      @eldermillennialvideogames Před 2 měsíci

      I just use SSH from a different machine on my network to access the CLI on any of my Batocera systems. On the Steam Deck one way is to press the button on the right side front of the Deck that has the 3 little dots on it. That takes you to the F1 menu. From "Applications" you can launch x-term, which will give you CLI access directly on the Deck. You will still likely need an input device connected to be able to type anything, so I recommend just doing it over the network from another machine. From a Windows 10/11 or Linux machine you'd just open a command prompt/terminal and type something like "ssh root@batocera" and then put in the default Batocera password when prompted (it's the word "linux", without the quotations). You can replace "batocera" in the ssh command above with the IP address assigned to your Steam Deck as well and it should work just the same.

    Would this work on any SBC devices? I see references to it running on Linux recently but haven't seen anybody mention of any of the SBCs are good enough to run VPX decently. Also wondering if running on Linux or Android would be a better bet if both are supported now.

    • @eldermillennialvideogames
      @eldermillennialvideogames Před 2 měsíci

      It probably depends since SBCs encompass such a broad performance range of devices. The Batocera method of running vpinball would likely only work if the platform is using the x86 based architecture. I'm pretty sure it's not an option in Batocera for other platforms and yes I'm saying that without actually firing up another system and verifying. You might be able to compile vpinball standalone for things like the rpi, but since vpinball is graphically demanding I don't think it would be a good experience on a lower end SBC like that. I'd like to see it on one of those $200-$300 Ryzen SBC's though. I bet it would run decently fine on something like that. I may have to get one of those to test it out. I don't have any decent Android devices so I can't test any of the builds for that either unfortunately. Honestly, I'm not that into Android in the first place. To be fair I haven't even tried running it on iOS or MacOS with Apple silicon even though I do have those and there are instructions on their GitHub for compiling for those. At the end of the day as long as it runs on Linux, I'm happy. Granted, I am a bit biased because messing around with Linux has been both a hobby and a career for me for a while now. The only real advantage I see to running vpinball on an SBC would be to try to save on space and power consumption like when putting it as part of a pincab build. Because I use vpinball exclusively through Batocera that isn't really a simple option right now. Though I do hear that Batocera is becoming more pincab friendly in their upcoming v40 release.

    • @eldermillennialvideogames
      @eldermillennialvideogames Před 3 měsíci

      I don't own a rpi5 and don't have any plans on getting one, so I haven't tested it myself. My "offline" install method won't work because it contains the x86_64 versions of the emulators. And I don't think the curl -L script command will download the arm64 versions either (could be wrong about that, though). In theory if you had versions of the emulators for the correct architecture you should technically be able to get them to work on the pi. However, keep in mind that the rpi5 is not super powerful. Even if you got it working, I don't think it would be a smooth or enjoyable experience. I'm betting you'd be seeing mostly single digit frames per second.

    may i ask how you update your switch emulator firmware to v17.0 on batocera??

    • @eldermillennialvideogames
      @eldermillennialvideogames Před 3 měsíci

      Sure. The global firmware updates are typically in .zip format when you download them. Extract them and they should consist of a bunch of .nca files. Copy those to your Batocera system to the location /userdata/bios/switch/firmware/. Don't forget to put any updated title and prod keys into /userdata/bios/switch/. Press F1 and go to Applications. Launch the config for the Switch emulator you want to use. If it isn't already showing the correct firmware version (usually visible in the bottom right corner) then go to the Tools menu and choose to install the firmware. Browse to the folder that has the .nca files and install. For Ryujinx you can actually point it to the firmware .zip file with the appropriate selection under the Tools menu. Hope this helps.

    I'm having trouble launching a switch game on my steam deck. After launching the game, it shows the name on screen and then it goes right back to the game list. I followed your instructions also. Only difference is that I did the curl L command. Crazy thing is that when I go applications and select the ryujinx config and open a game from there, it launches. I know it has to be a setting issue. The yuzu config won't launch. Gives me an error.

    • @eldermillennialvideogames
      @eldermillennialvideogames Před 3 měsíci

      The curl -L method should be working. Only reason it can be a problem is that more often than not one of those download phases will timeout, but the script keeps moving along so at the end you'll think it went okay when it really didn't. The switch updater under "Ports" usually doesn't have this problem. So if that is working fine then that rules out a bad install. When you launch ryujinx-avalonia-config (or whatever it's called), check the Input setting and make sure that the Steam Deck controls are listed as the device with a type of "pro controller". You'll probably need to actually perform the mapping of the controls as well. Probably a good time to install newer firmware for Ryujinx as well while you're in the config app if you want to. After you've done that, hit Apply and OK and go back to the ES menu and try to launch the game from there using Ryujinx Avalonia. It's probably looking for a non-existant controller mapping config and that is what is causing Ryujinx to exit right after starting. That's behavior I've seen anyway. If that doesn't fix it then I'd have to take a look at the contents of your /userdata/system/logs/es_launcher_stdout and es_launcher_stderr files to figure out what's going on. What's the error you get trying to launch the yuzu config app? Back to my first point, I'd seriously consider running the Switch Updater if you haven't already just to make sure there isn't something janky with the initial install.

      Glad you got it working. I just had to fire up my Steam Deck to check, but I don't believe Yuzu EA is working for me either. But Yuzu Mainline does work. Ryujinx-Avalonia is going to be the most up-to-date version of the Ryujinx emulator and it does work for me, but like I said, I first had to go in and map my controls manually in order to get it working from the ES menu. I'm trying to use Ryujinx more than Yuzu lately just because at least Ryujinx will get updates going forward. Haven't tested it in a little while on the Deck, but last time I checked Ryujinx performance wasn't awful, but it wasn't great on the deck either. Ryujinx is working great on my PC though. I've nearly made it all the way through Paper Mario: TTYD on it. Yes, I did pay for the switch game and download it to my Switch and yes I did almost immediately start playing it on an emulator instead. The fan can be annoying. As soon as someone can invent a powerful handheld gaming device with completely silent and effective cooling, they'll make a fortune.

      I was messing around with a new Batocera installation on my Steam Deck and gave the curl method of installing Switch emulation a try. It's been a while. I see it has changed quite a bit since the last time I used it. For Ryujinx-Avalonia, there is no firmware installed so you'll need to install it. It's not too hard to find ryujinx firmware downloads online. I'm using v18 myself. I found a zip file containing the firmware .nca files and installed it by opening Ryujinx Avalonia and installing it from the zip (one of the drop down menus has this option). I also have the appropriate .keys files under /userdata/bios/switch/. Then make sure the Input under Settings is set to "Steam Deck (0)" and set it to be a Pro Controller. Go through the process of mapping each controller button (it's a pain, I know). Back in the Batocera ES menu, set your game to launch with Ryujinx Avalonia and set the "Auto Controller Configuration" option to "Off". That should get Ryujinx working. The curl method seems to no longer install Yuzu, so that's why it isn't working for you. You'll need to put the yuzu.AppImage and yuzuEA.AppImage files into /userdata/system/switch/. Once the app images are in place Yuzu should just work. It seems to be working fine with the automatic controller configuration set to "Auto". I may need to do an updated guide on this soon.
