DOLLFACE POTTERY - JOANNE OLEARY
Registrace 14. 10. 2022
Hello! My name is Joanne O’Leary of Dollface Pottery & Jewellery. I am based in St. Johms, Newfoundland and Labrador on the most easterly province of Canada. I handbuild all pieces with a few basic tools and without the use of a pottery wheel. Most of my mugs are made from my own hand drawn texture rollers or commercial texture rollers and all designs are based on themes found in nature in our province such as our flora and fauna.

Hi Joanne. I absolutely loved your kiln opening. Those mugs are spectacular, I would really love more details on your glazing technique. Thanks
Thank you! Will do! Visit the Brush on Glazing Cone 5/6 Facebook group. I give before and after glazing tips ( including this mug) there
👍
Thx
Is your figurative work done with Underglazes before glazing? What’s your process? Great work
It is a textured roller that I impress a wet clay slab with before building the body of the mug.
These are so beautiful!! Glad to find another combo for texture autumn.
Thank you!
Love that solar storm effect! Lovely unload as always!
Thank you Lisa!
Lovely pieces Joanne! Love the solar storm must be a special sight to see❤
Thank you, the solar storm mugs did turn out rather special
Great plates, great mugs! Thank you!
Thanks Audrey
Wow! Love your solar storm northern lights technique! And the breaching whale mugs are pretty nice as well. Actually, it was really all very good! 😊 Thanks so much for sharing! 💜
Cool, thanks!
Wow, that solar storm mug is STUNNING!
Thank you, I loved how they turned out
Wow!!!!! Those solar storm mugs are amazing so dramatic ❤
Thanks!
Very nice the storm cups are beautiful, thanks for sharing
Your welcome!
Just love the mugs with pedestal botttoms!!!
Thanks me too, takes a little more time to make but they are worth it
Hoping this isn’t a duplicate question. Can you guesstimate the water to obsidian ratio? Thanks!
Yes about 70% OB, 30% water
I am so jelly I wish I could be king and seeing these views as well. You have the perfect life, reminds me a lot of Cape Cod up near Eastham. Love the colors and do the platters sell well, I know you said there for friends and fam but still curious.
Not all the pieces were for friends or family. The mugs and platters are for a gallery on the southern shore of Newfoundland
they're beautiful! When you do a celadon like storm or rainforest and then seaweed at the top, do you coat the whole cup with the celadon glaze and then seaweed over it? Do you brush or dip the glaze? Thanks.
I brush the celedon over the entire outside and then brush seaweed over top
Wow wow wow. Stunning glazing techniques. You live in a gorgeous part of the world. Which provides you with so much inspiration. I am impressed with hand built mugs. I'll have to scroll through your content to see if you have any how to make videos. Look forward to more from you. Happy glazing and keep those hand's dirty. PS the refire pls tell me the reason why and did you add more glaze second time around.
Thank so much!
Wow was I surprised when you said you only hand build!! Would never had thot, great job
Thank you
Congratulations on the unwarped giant platter!
Yes, that is a rarity isn’t it? Bowls I find are the worst for warping as I use hump molds to create them
Thank you for sharing! Love the combo’s you use on the whale tails! ❤
And I am impressed how your cups look! The look so perfect! No wheel needed for you❤
Thanks so much, time + practice equals less warping. I cannot say they all turn out like that as I have often shown on previous videos
Beautiful thanks for sharing cant wait to see your handbuilding video
And I am looking forward to getting some time over the summer to film and edit it.
LOVE the muscle shell! Love ALL the "tail" combos! Cant figure out which is my fav...oh well, they all are! Thanks!
Thank you, I can’t wait to see it with MOP overglaze added
But you don't show the finished piece!
It is at the beginning of the video, the cover shot, that’s how it turns out.
I just revised the cover shot of the video, that is the mug in the demo
Please don’t be offended but if you just wipe your lids and bottles so there is no glaze to solidify you will find it easy to take the tops off your glazes. Loved the video, thank you.
Not offended at all, I just have to take the time to do it is all. Lol
I found putting plastic wrap over the top before putting the lid on. Saves me alot of time.
Thank you
You're welcome
Wonderful. A consideration on the shell is flux blossom with the blue and pearl white. Thanks again. 🇨🇦💞
Thanks for that suggestion. The next time I order glazes I’ll consider the flux blossom
Beautiful job what colour do you put inside
Thank you! I used Spectrum White on the inside.
Thanks for sharing, I’ll give it a go. 👍
Your welcome, let me know how it goes
Wow all so pretty and I always love your whale cups could look at those all day! The mussel shell is great your plan for the next one sounds good too. I love the outside combo on that one, looks so realistic! And the tails!🐋💙
Thanks so much
Looks wonderful! Love the colour of the mussel Shell, but depends on the colour of the shell by you! I remember them being green in new zealand
Thank you, yes they are certainly multiple colours but based on feedback I think I will not use seaweed glaze next time. Thanks for watching!
I would leave out the green in the muscle shell
Thank you
I love the muscle shell dish!!! Don't change a thing!
Thank you
I’m not sure why I’m just finding your videos! Love you and your work!! I have a question about the starry night combo. Do you coat the entire mug and then layer the blue hydrangea on top of it or do you do each separately? How many coats of each? Thank you
Always 2 coats for each and I cover the entire outside before applying the blue hydrangea
Lovely pieces Joanne! The mussel bowl is stunning. Can’t wait to see it with mother of pearl 😊. I think it would be interesting to see it without the green next time. Btw your hair looks awesome 😊 thanks for sharing
Thanks Lisa, Yes I am thinking of leaving out the seaweed next time too
Love them. That muscle shell is stunning! Great results. Do you have a video on making the whale and baby mugs? I have lots of time to watch videos, lol. Loving yours as I grew up spending sooo much time on the coast of Alaska. I wish I could make more marine style pottery, but being landlocked in Utah, it doesn't go over as well. ❤
Yes for sure, I do have videos on my channel regarding carving using Mishima technique and Meditation Monday videos that you may benefit from while healing
@@Dollfacepottery Thank you. Going looking.
Love them all the oyster shell will just pop with the mother of pearl
Thank you
I'm hoping I can find one of your pieces in St. John's when I'm visiting my brother this summer. Always something nice turning up on your channel!
Great that you are visiting this summer. In the summer, my work can be found at the Craft Council Shop and Pantry, 155 Water Street, St JOHNS, or at the Baccaliu Gallery in Hearts Content, or at The Colony of the Avalon in Ferryland. Both Hearts Content and Ferryland are about an hour’s drive from St JOHNS in case you venture further afield.
Thanks for sharing 👍. Helpful hint for opening stuck glaze lids...dip the bottle upside down in water and let it sit for a bit. Also reduces dust as you open.
Excellent advice thank you
Oh my goodness I love it🎉
Thanks
Thanks again Joanna. Love your whale mugs. We have been to NFL and absolutely love “The Rock”. You are a lucky gal. 🇨🇦 tinyheartspottery
You are so welcome!
I love this kiln opening - such wonderful glaze combos on lovely hand built work. I love wasabi and sky mixed. I just did a 50/50 mix and fell in love. will try your ratio next time. Thank you Joanne
Wonderful! Thanks
Satin patina doesn't run on its own but in combination it definitely does! Especially at cone 7! Love your whale mugs, storm celadon is one of my favorites too, and your florida celadon is so florida keys, pretty!!!
Thank you!
Excellent
☺️
Thank you so much for honoring my request for a video of the northern lights glazing process!! I can’t wait to try!!!
You are so welcome!
Thank you so much, the only glaze I’m missing is lustrous jade. Any suggestions on how to replace it or should I pick it up next time I go pottery shopping?
I would experiment on a test tile with something else you have, maybe textured turquoise, or emerald falls, or vert lustre, or iron lustre, just to see what effects you get from one of those first.
@@Dollfacepottery I love emerald falls so I will test this one first. Thank you for your help 😊
New subscriber, so hi from SK. Thanks for a great video. I’m just starting and learning lots from videos so generously shared.
Awesome! Thank you!
Thanks for sharing, Joanna! I really like the way YOUR Northern lights turns out. Maybe it's partly due to that lustrous Jade, which I will have to buy! Way over here in Vancouver, we have Orcas! Happy Creating and thanks again!
Thanks Audrey Lynn, I do hope one day I get to visit BC
@Dollfacepottery I have not been to Newfoundland, so we are even, fellow Canadian!
That's a pretty spiffy jar opener!
I love my jar opening for sure
Thank you for sharing. The jar opener is my best friend as well
That's awesome
Joanne, loved the intro. So nice to see pics of your home province. Those planters are beautiful! And your mugs as always, so inspiring. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you Lisa!
Oh wow! That Northern lights! Beautiful! LOVE the sea planter. Lots of work! The other pot is very lovely, too! All the mugs are so lovely! Thanks, Joanna!
Thanks Audrey Lynn! I have been watching your kiln openings as well, lots of beautiful pots!
@@Dollfacepottery Thanks, Johanne!😊
