      Hey! So the "yeeaw" bass is the one I made in this episode that I break down starting at 0:43. The bass I made "yesterday" is the pulsewobwob that I do walk through in the Day194 video. It maybe sounds different in that episode because in this one here I'm modulating the pitch wheel to get it to do that octave jump, hope that helps!

    I think that your bass' are getting fatter and moving closer to that pro wide bass sound youre looking for. But from what Ive seen, youre aiming to do this with a single vital instance per bass sound. www.youtube.com/@InverseAudioUK has some excellent tutorials about layering basses to achieve different functions.

  • @TheSpeker97
    @TheSpeker97 Před 4 dny

    From what I understand, the heavy emphasis on basses needing to be mono is a holdover from vinyl. Too much stereo width would make the play head hop out of its track. Nowadays it's more for if your song is played live and the sound guy doesn't mono everything under 80 or 150Hz like he's "supposed to". And that's only done because of phase shifting problems that *could* occur. I've never played live, but that's what I've read. Also, Metrik has a lot more white noise than your song. He has that shimmery reverb on the snare and hi-hat that you don't have. In the snippet you played, either the hi hat's reverb or the snare's reverb is always happening. He also has white noise risers/fallers between his sections. That could be filling out the square more.

    • @WavePunkMusic
      @WavePunkMusic Před 4 dny

      I've messed with white noise in previous tracks and it's definitely something that has its place and might end up in this track, definitely agree that could be the difference here! That's really cool about the mono bass and its importance to Vinyl, I didn't know that. I do think it's still important, even if just because that's what our ears now are used to hearing, but also from a physics standpoint it makes sense. Thanks for watching!

    • @tomsorensen5594
      @tomsorensen5594 Před 4 dny

      @@WavePunkMusicto add to the mono/stereo low end conversation - Optical (Virus Recordings/Ed Rush & Optical) considers stereo width in terms of power and dryness - there's a Reddit AMA where he talks about peak power being achieved by both speakers moving in the same way, at the same time - though he concedes that can lead to a drier sound. As DNB producers I think it's up to us to search for that sweet spot in terms of stereo width for the elements/group in our projects - no hard and fast rule necessarily but preserving mono/power as much as possible in the low end makes sense - unless the widening is actively adding something, keep it pretty mono. Also in my case, a lot of older or smaller soundsystems used in grassroots venues in London can be mono - so that translation to mono is still relevant there

  • @brpx
    @brpx Před 9 dny

    First of all, sorry for the wall of text A really important thing to take notice of when sounds start to approach the extremes of the stereo field is bad mono compatibility (when sounds get phase cancellation issues when played in mono). I don't know about Logic but usually DAWs have built in tools you can use to check mono compatibility. When played in headphones it isn't much of a problem bc both sides are isolated from each other, but it starts to get tricky once you move to speakers, especially professional rigs like in clubs and festivals which in fact are set up to only play the mono signal to avoid phasing issues. You already covered the basics by making the sub mono, but there's still a lot of information you might be losing in the mid to high frequencies which is basically unavoidable unless you have completely different sounds panned left and right. Regarding that Venjent track, if you listen to that track in mono you will find out that the bass sound noticeably less complex but it still sounds good. After analyzing the mid/side channels, I think what's going on is that he is stacking at least two bass sounds, one focused on the mid information (doesn't need to be completely mono except for the sub) and a top bass that is much brighter and completely wide (this one actually almost completely disappears in mono).First of all, sorry for the wall of text and for nerding out a lot, but I think this is good advice.

    I think it would be ccol if the shape of the sounds were the subtext of a song. Like the song would be about something else, but over the course of the song you show off different shapes of music. In sketch comedy, you might write a scene with 3 beats and each beat kinda builds off another. Make the song you want, but use the skill as the structure to build off

      omg wait OTT is free? I'm downloading that tomorrow lmao, I thought it was paid hahaha

  • @heavyliftingindustries7918

    Probably a yes/no situation on the Vital bug. Likely, under the hood, it's using a decimal point to represent the number in the unison percent (and other places). If that's the case, it's showing a rounded whole number. It shows 0%, but it's actually 0.3% or something along those lines. So, technically, probably not a bug in that it is working as intended. But also probably a bug since it doesn't do what the user expects it to.

    • @WavePunkMusic
      @WavePunkMusic Před 10 dny

      yeah EXACTLY, I couldn't decide if it was a "bug" or not, because I do think it was intentional, but definitely not how most users will understand that parameter because of the UI. The other parameters like phase also are precise to decimal places, but the UI rounds up to a whole number. Probably a characteristic that comes with the territory of a free plugin

  • @08tanooki
    @08tanooki Před 10 dny

    The High end details in Venjent's bass sound like down sampling. You would have to only down sample the high end somehow.

    • @WavePunkMusic
      @WavePunkMusic Před 10 dny

      hmmm, could definitely be the case, in the next few videos we do some separating of individual sounds into multiple channels so we can have different frequency ranges take up different amounts of the stereo field, we could probably also apply distortion in a similar split-up way.

  • @TheSpeker97
    @TheSpeker97 Před 11 dny

    Seems like adding saturation makes the giornometer dance pretty good. I bet with some reverb and the Wider plugin from Infected Mushroom you get get it pretty filled out. Also, just parroting what other mixing tutorials say, if you've got really dry snare/hat/ride samples, putting them into a drum buss with a little touch of reverb to put them into a "room" sounds good and would fill out the sides on the gonionmeter also.

    • @WavePunkMusic
      @WavePunkMusic Před 10 dny

      very true on the drums. I've been focusing on the basses, but drum reverb in DnB is something I still need to learn about. It's a subtle but important thing. Saturation and Distortion in general seems to be the key, I explore that quite a bit over the next few days :D Thanks for Watching!

  • @tobiastho9639
    @tobiastho9639 Před 11 dny

    People who use modular would sometimes do a patch for left and recreate it for right. So there would be a slight difference. I've seen Junky XL (Tom Holkenborg) do this in his old studio in one of his videos. If you just turn the degre of the sine wave, you could have areas of cancelation or overlapping, with more complex sounds this shouldn't be an issue.

  • @tobiastho9639
    @tobiastho9639 Před 11 dny

    Can you elaborate on the Goniometer? Is it a VST? Is it part of Logic? Is there a free version or is it part of vital? I used vision 4x from noisia so far... Thx and good break thrugh!

    • @WavePunkMusic
      @WavePunkMusic Před 11 dny

      It's a default plugin in Logic called the MultiMeter. If you search "goniometer plugins" on google, the top result from ToneBoosters is free and works exactly the same as this one, just turn down the "blur" and "line" settings, by default it's a bit hard to look at.

    You can see Bishu is using 2 main oscilators and a sub oscilator for his bass. I've noticed your basses often consist of one oscilator that is heavily modulated, but it lacks base in a form of more stable low frequency oscilators.

      Ooh I'll check out the diode filter! If you check Days 198/195, I do try to have a sub frequency oscillator going direct out like the Sub OSC in Serum that Bishu is using. Sometimes with the heavier distorted sounds, the sub does feel like it's making a difference so I leave it out, but we are still learning!

    Nice, thats a great start of a tune, id say it needs a sub and a counter melody, some arrangement work, and indeed, you have a tune there. Your vids keep getting recommended, so you must be doing something right, I'll be checking in every once in a while!

    Would have loved to hear a filter over the bas... One experiment you might want to try is making a bass the old school way: It started with a tone generator. Then use eq, filter, phaser and so on to make it sound cool. Export and use the effects again... repeat the cycle again and again. Then put it in a sampler and animate some more effects. Ad in parallel a simple mono sub bass... have fun!

    -12 semitones was regarding the comb filter. You can change the cutoff of a comb filter with the lower slider (under the filter visualization). Setting it to -12 semitones makes the sound more bassy and gives it more body. I also didn't specify in my original comment that I set the resonance of the comb filter to 0% (slider on the side of the filter). I used the pulse wave from Basic Shapes (the shorter one that's on the last frame of the wavetable) - it's a simpler shape that sounds more like a roar.

    • @WavePunkMusic
      @WavePunkMusic Před 25 dny

      OOH I had never noticed that slider is measured in semitones! I thought it related directly to the whole frequency spectrum. I still have the free version of Vital (I really should go pay them given how much use I'm getting out of, so I don't have any of their basic wavetables, I downloaded some other wavetable library off the internet, was the shape I eventually settled on close to the one you used?

    So I hope this comment comes off as theory over criticism but when it comes to drum n bass there are a lot of things to consider (that I’ve learned). For one, having overlapping drums with tails is the number one groove killer. Since dnb is so fast you are always competing for space; helping all your drums be super staccato will give you breathing room for your other elements. Second is also phrasing, have a really simple call and response is the meat and potatoes of almost every genre of dnb. Just like the drums, having intention with the controlling the sounds you phrase will help it all come together. Think less is more rather than stacking synths. If you are going for the suuuuuper melodic approach to dnb then reserve the energy of your drums and pull out the low end. You’d also want to back off the energy of your sub bass so it becomes more about the mid range elements. Think like gaming mixes. Hope some of that helps shape what you’re looking for

      @WavePunkMusic Před 26 dny

      Actually super helpful tips that really align with what I've been experiencing. I've always been afraid to chop the tails off my drums because it feels unnatural, but that's kinda of the sound I'm going for and I didn't really realize how I was working against myself. I'll have to go back and listen to the melodic DnB that I've been imagining my music fitting in with. In my head, they have super powerful and clear drums, melodies, AND bass, but it would make sense that the bass is more just implied by the synths and the low end is actually mostly just for drums. I definitely have a habit of stacking synths instead of making one that I actually like, appreciate all the thoughts! thanks for watching!

    I need to learn how to do buses.

    • @WavePunkMusic
      @WavePunkMusic Před 26 dny

      two ways to do it! either change the "out" on a track from Stereo Out to one of the busses (there are like 32 of them, they are just hidden in the mixing UI until you start to use one.) or select all the tracks you want to put on a bus, right click the track head, a click "create track stack" and then "summing stack." Now all the tracks are basically in a folder you. can put effects on.
