I thought your conversation in the beginning about the comics was very interesting. I never loved preboot Flynn because he made it like the games, he really didn't. He just took what the comic was and made it better. I love the comic characterizations, and I know I'm not the only who prefers them. People only like this comic because they are genuinely as dumb as the characters in it.

After reading issues 160-247, a bit of post-reboot and classic era, (even Ken Penders), I can see where the problem described by @JackofBlades500 exists. Personally, Ian, Ken, and everyone else who've written on the comics have made good and bad stories, but most of them are overshadowed by the main games, forcing these problems to go under SEGA's radar (If they aren't Disney).

Bro's being too generous to call it mid, its dumpsterfire at best since issue #1, like straight up making the games canon, referencing events that weren't even well established, its just an incoherent story with zero direction.

Can somebody put a time stamp for when they actually talk about this story?

28:48 Not that I dislike this ark overall but I think that sonic saying tails worships him is at best a poor choice of wording. Even though sonic doesn't know tails is in the room when he says this his carelessness throughout the first part of the arc in dismissing/ignoring Nicole's advice (twice) and barging past Tails and Rosemary at the beginning meant that he failed to defuse the tension between him and tails before it reaches the boiling point. Again, not that its necessarily out of character for sonic, but his apathy really prevented him from taking Nicole's advice and communicating with tails before it reached the boiling point. From Tails' point of view it may seem as though sonic is essentially favouring the royal family over the Prowers, especially since Tails' father isn't really shown to have done anything wrong (at all). Even if the comment of Tails worshipping him is only intended as an insult to Tails' parents, that doesn't really make it any better because it undermines Tails' parents and therefore hurts Tails (besides even if sonic isn't trying to belittle Tails with this choice of wording, its still mostly Sonic's fault for being so careless with his language, which intentionally or not does hurt Tails, and the fact that it was said behind Tails' back probably makes it even worse from Tails' view). I think ultimately many people's opinions on the ark depend on whether they're okay with Sonic being in the wrong. On one hand it's completely in character for him to be a bit careless and impulsive, and in this ark this is what causes the whole conflict with Tails and makes Sonic seem like a bad friend. But on the other hand Sonic's intentions are still good and he does realise he was in the wrong before things get even further out of hand, and moreover Tails certainly communicate better and listen to Sonic before resorting to violence, but given the heated situation its pretty realistic for him to act in such a way. I personally like the ark since - despite the fact that neither Sonic nor (perhaps to some extent) Tails act perfectly - this is what makes it realistic and relateable. However I do think that Tails is sometimes done dirty in Archie in that he is often the victim of others acting unintentionally poorly towards him.

Imo 06 is the most controversial story in the entire franchise. It's peak as all F and one of the best in the entire series factually of course, true alpha gamers know that. There are tho many beta orbital males that don't see the truth and they don't wanna so it is what it is.

I remember this vividly from being a kid, I think it still holds up well. It definitely ends anticlimactic but honestly for Archie they did good, which is saying something

I've started reading Archie partly because of this podcast and i'm up to issue 42. issue 21 and Mecha Madness have been my favorite stories so far so I'm so down if that's next episode. This has slowly turned into my one of favorite podcast to listen to every 2 weeks (My comment from last episode didn't get read but you win some you lose some 🥲) Like I said on the #175 video I did see this arc via a comic dub when I was a kid (There was also a animation of it.) so I know a bit about this arc though I never knew it was controversial. As a kid I thought it was kind of cool to have Sonic and Tails fight personally, Like smashing 2 action figures together (Similar to why I really enjoyed myself with Mecha Madness.). Obviously their conflict goes deeper than fighting just because but that's just why I remember enjoying it.

How dare you. I commented in that last video that seeing Pandering's "art" makes me *not* want to eat food when looking at it. And I can't control what thumbnails I will see. AND I *don't* want to stop following your channel. Also, I didn't watch matttt's entire video because of some meme things he said like "Sonic fans are never satisfied" and even worse: "Sonic is a blank slate". Maybe the latter is fine for spin-off media, but uh...yeah, no.

I always liked this story. And as time went on, I've only grown to like it more. It's definitely not my favorite Sonic story, but it really hits hard. The conflict between Sonic and Tails is really compelling and has great drama. And this story is so good, it somehow made me care about a political drama in a Sonic comic. I really couldn't pick a side because both were really well done. And I always loved the "Suppose? Suppose what?" line.

This story arc serves as the ultimate Litmus Test to distinguish between fans who approach the comic series under the games lens vs those who approach it under the comic lens. One thing that has been on my mind is the increasing divide among fans regarding their perception of this series, with a growing number of fans dismissing previous story and only viewing moments like LSD, Holocaust Poem, or The slap as subjects of mockery with Ian Flynn being rewnown (at this point) as the savior of the comics for revitalizing the comic series to align more closely with the video games, with praises of his work often revolves around more on his portrayal of the game's cast moments like Sonic vs. Eggman (both from 175 and 200), Shadow's "This is who I am" speech, or the entirety of Treasure Team Tango, and there's nothing wrong with liking those moments (those are some of my favorites as well), but it becomes apparently clear that some fans don't view Ian's stories as someone using a sandbox to be able to make fun and intrinsic stories by weaving together various elements from preexisting narratives, but rather as Ian purging all the filth that have been impeding on this series, This causes casual fans to have a preconceived bias that all of Ian's work must be exactly like from the games, including characterization, all leading back to this arc infamy stemming from fans failing to grasp that the characters are far from their game counterpart. So instead of viewing this arc as an accumulation of dozens of components forming into this narrative, the critique revolves around the game character's actions not corresponding with how fans perceive them from the game. This is why whenever people tend to bring up this story, they always talk about Sonic vs. Tails but never about Elias vs. Amadeus.

I feel that using doc ock as an example of a villain that Spider-Man can't or won't be able to change is kinda funny because he can and has changed, that was the whole point of superior Spider-Man, I mean peter kinda does a similar thing to sonic in pushing his philosophy onto otto in his last moments of life, maybe the fact that he literally dies changes things but I don't feel like it does, now of course he went back to being a villain but we know he is capable a change. Also you're conflating two different things, yes in our real world space we know Eggman and metal won't change, but that doesn't mean that in the fictive reality of the story the characters can't believe he could change or even that he actually can't, when he lost his memory that was him changed in a literal sense, so doing something like that and making it permanent would mean a changed eggman. Lets put a hypothetical out there, lets say that our reality in some other world is a comicbook (would be a pretty terrible show but I digress) and a character in that said comic is a bad guy, and the story of this bad guy is that they will always be a bad guy until the day they die. To us, not knowing this information, does that mean we shouldn't try to change there mind, to lock them up, force them to see things our way or they will stay locked up till they die? No of course we should try to do all those things, because in our perspective they are a person and people can change if the right circumstances are met. For eggman and other fictional villains those circumstances will never be met, but that doesn't mean a story talking about the nonexistent possibility that it could happen can't or shouldn't be explored, even if it will be later undone. Thats just my two cents though, just found your guy's content and have been enjoying it, consider me a subscribe.
