Leyland Lynx Prototypes - B60-03
Bringing you the early days of the Leyland Lynx when the dreams of the design team were becoming a reality. Secrets of Lynx design are unveiled as we go back in time to experience what it was like 40 years ago on 7th July 1984.
To my knowledge, this is the first informative video online on the Lynx and I have to give many thanks to Basil Hancock who was heavily involved with Lynx design at the time for making this presentation happen.

Generous length recording. This former Miller, Metrobus and Southdown PSV vehicle is heard with Tanat Valley, their first Lynx, whose success at the company led to further purchases of the type. I lost my notes where she was heading out but there was some fast and slow sections and several reversals (which usually means village locations). Does the sign at the front really misspell No Smoking?

Photo kindly provided by Paul Coupland www.flickr.com/photos/142228020@N05/ Fast, furious and happy sounding! She was one of those Lynxes where the engine "goes the other way" coupled with a more beautiful sounding axle than you would usually expect and there's a story here, this motor turned up really late up at Macclesfield. It had been raining very heavily to the extent that some of the road...

Oh so quiet this motor, both the axle and the TL11 engine were subdued into the background but when that retarder kicked in, suddenly full beef! Early on this route (think to the Netherley area of Liverpool), an inspection team boarded with force, clearly expecting more trouble than in her previous Sovereign days around the Shire counties. Is that a Mark 2 emergency door in the photo? Recorded:...

A pair of Lynxes running here. I guess they are all classic now being bare minimum 32 year old but it would have been around 15 years since I last rode K101 JMV in active rail replacement service. Isn't it a privilege for a bus rally to have more than one Lynx operating.... Date: 21st April 2024

I boarded this motor on a stinking hot day. 2005 was the year and Gravesend rail station, the location of this photo, was the actual boarding point. The busy non-standard engine is actually a Gardner 6HLXCT, an engine sold at premium prices in the Lynx due to superior fuel economy. She picked up okay too but a frustrating crawl at temporary lights in temperatures of over 30C led to an air buzze...

More ear massaging Cummins L10 magic. Another generous length upload from a previous short file, she winds through country roads from Weston-Super-Mare before some sudden late thrash near her final destination of Bristol in 2005. Sounds very similar to F612 RTC. Main photo kindly provided by Michael Wadman www.flickr.com/people/michaelwadman/

Remember when Crewe was dominated by Lynx? We are now back in 2004 on a drive to Chester with a bus that was originally with Stevensons, one of only 2 Lynx new to them, the other being E72 KBF. I was just setting up my mic as she was reversing off the bay but did capture a snippet of the cute sounding air brakes pressed down hard. There are some nice door air noises here as well and it also see...

Brutally powerful Lynx driven, or shall I say tamed by a Scottish lass in the South West. I think this is virtually the entire run from Weston-Super-Mare to Bridgwater (spelt that correctly!) right after I hopped off of sister F612 RTC. Originally a much shorter file released years ago on YT, you can hear more of the savage acceleration here with her absolutely catapulting forward from a standi...

A funny old Lynx this with additional sound effects running in tune (or out of tune!) with the acceleration/deceleration. It may have been a defective water pump or perhaps the power steering was having trouble. In any case, she was on a 94 service to Glenfield back in 2008

Maybe it's just me but I just didn't like this one. Too plain and boring? She was eventually purchased for spares, with the front end cut away to replace the modified front of C920 FMP. Here, she was in service with Arriva Midlands North on a 112 service out to Birmingham from Lichfield.

Flat out or not at all, that’s the story of the Lynx!
I’ve driven all but one of the Australian Lynxes, the locally bodied and WMPTE examples. I also worked with Basil in Sydney when I was an apprentice. I had no idea how invested he was in all this until years later. All those missed conversations!
@@mistero4 Wow, thanks for the comment. There's more stuff to come here from him, he's still around.
Just a pity that two things happened which brought about the premature end of these excellent buses. Deregulation Day in 1986 and the advance of low floor buses.
What an excellent video! Drove these in their “second life” with Damory Coaches in Dorset. I think we had a total of 5 if I remember correctly and I remember our manager having a bit of a celebration when all five were on the road for a full days service…. Excellent buses to drive and looked very smart too. Think the rot got too them in the end though like so many 80’s 90’s designs.
@@stevedoesdiesel Really appreciate, there is more to come later this year. You might know that E64 WDT was saved and rebuilt by Chesterfield based preservationists and had a life on the Barrow Hill gala days although she has been in storage for a few years now. You'll be interested to know that the sound effects of the approaching Lynx on the pave test were donated from Damory E51 MMT, the only TL11H/hydracyclic Lynx I have been on.
@@leylandlynxfanclub6286 Excellent! Had the joy of riding on it when visiting the Barrow Hill Beer Fest a few years ago. Must dig my photos out of it in service 👍
This is an outstanding video and very informative. I remember WMPTE's 5 stage one lynxes fitted with hydracyclic gear shifters prior to the 250 production models with fully automatic gearboxes.. Hope to see more in this series very soon!
I have driven two lynxes one had a coming together with a raising bollard resulting in a radiator with a v in the middle and bent entrance floor written off. The second cane from Dorset sprinter both were fitted with the TL11 engine.
You need a dark background behind your white on screen text as it’s very difficult to read. Or why not just voice it instead.
@@ShiresMatt Sorry you couldn't see the text well. Dealing with the text was most difficult as I was aiming for a certain look but I spent time upgrading visibility until I found it acceptable. Of course my eyes may be different to somebody else's. I'll consider this point for any future videos.
An extremely interesting video. The commentary certainly makes me feel I’m in the scene!
Centrewest buses at Uxbridge depot had the Lynx on route 607 for many years. They were changed over for Volvo double deckers with Northern Counties bodywork.
I do remember riding on a Leyland Lynx on the 607 back in the early 1990s and also in other bus companies as well. I was told by one man who ran a transportation company in Harfordshire back then at a bus rally in Essex in the late 1980s said to me Lynxes are bad news.
What year was this filmed? I'm sure it wasn't 2017, as this bus would have been almost 30 years old.
I think 2006. She went up North East and repainted into orange livery before scrappage. G293 KWY will be around this summer.
West Midlands also try out volvo, but lynx won the day, sorry last posting,my phone faulty, enjoyed video clip
Remember ride on west midlands ,early version, use in Wolverhampton, area, also use Wolverhampton, but Leyland lynx won large order, from west midlands, sad no left in service, maybe one have saved in preservation, enjoy the ride
I understand G266 EOG and G292 EOG are safe.

They were great buses to drive you could override the speed limiter by going at top speed (55-60) click the neutral button and put back into top it gave you an extra 5mph. Sheffield and District (part of West Riding Traction) 1986-93/
This is what a Lynx should sound like with a ZF
British bus !!! , There all Chinese now
Be lovely sound recording if he wasn’t on and off the throttle, that’s what messes the gearbox up, but beautiful ZF Whine that I remember x
Probably my all time favourite noise. Lynx often has no middle in the throttle sadly although there were a few with a different setup

Hi Cannadine I'd love to bring back Grey-Green. There's maybe 5 Grey Green vehicles out there, maybe a running day could happen at some point. Don't think much else. Think your messaging isn't going to work, sorry.
Why Don’t they do an Electric Leyland Lynx Version of those Vehicles?
This is why I watch youtube
Really appreciate that seal of approval!!
The Bristol - Weston service is the X1, and still is as of 2024. Back in the day it was regularly worked by Volvo Citybuses / Olympians, with the odd Lynx appearing on it from time to time.
Excellent, I'll add it to the description
This is why, what we do....
Leyland
I'm from around there, and it's lovely again to hear this!
Got a few more vids. You wouldn't by any chance have bumped into the owners of her? Love to find out what's happening.
The sister to mine E885,which retired to be a glamping bus in 2020and it drove to it retirement.
Needs a new diff, new gearbox and the engine reconditioned
Think she'll need a new chassis having been in the scrapyard lol
The old girl returned to it's home town
Retired now, living parked up at Lan pyn farm as a glamping bus.Still has the Original Lynx cab and the interior when it was converted to a snooker school bus.Search glamping bus Wrexham. And registration E885 KYW for it's varied history. Thanks Barry, Bus museum near Cardiff. For all thier help and advice. To keep it on road for 4 years. They have a couple and worth a visit . It's now resting .
I was friends with a driver in the 90's/early 2000's and we had a bunch of the mk1 lynxes, and a couple times while he was NIS he occasionally gave me a lift to around the corner from the depot and I was shocked to learn those Lynxes were limited to 68mph with WMT/West Midlands Travel ( now National Express ). Not sure if that was the case for all of the Lynxes we had but I had first hand experience of travelling at 68mph on the limiter in a lynx during those NIS lifts lol
Was it a tachograph Speedo? Some of the factory speedos (not all) over read by 10%. Heard of a WMT with 72mph readout. Also heard of Lynxes going off the scale and on a narrow ratio too!!
I'm not sure but it definitely was hitting almost 70 on dual carriageways while NIS, we were catching a few cars on the straights lol
My lynx 1 was limited to 60ish but would always pass HGV on the motorway with ease and could always beat 7.5 tons off the lights.E885 kyw Zapz gaming and karaoke bus now retired as a glamping bus in Wrexham.Worked and running on road till 3 years ago.
@@ianlaidler8279 HGV is a good measure. Reckoned they turned her up, 885 only did normal speed down at Arriva, wouldn't overtake HGV unless mega slow. Glad she is still living
@@LOLGotYerTags there's video on CZcams of G266 EOG overrunning her normal top speed downhill. She was would have been close to 70 but normally around 60-62
What was this 😳 she sounds awfull
I drove some of the sisters to this vehicle with Red & White. The sharp brakes used to frighten me originally so I preferred a National. But once I got used to them, loved the Lynxes
Brings back memories riding on a lynx my dad drove one for yorkshire busses dewsbury and nationals but loved the lynx sound and the great big angry grunt they do in reverse hahaha i have a picture of me in front of one of his lynx when he parked it outside the house f304aww
I never knew they had volvo engined ones. Driven leyland engined versions.
Looks familiar travelled on this beast many times in its and my home town Merthyr when it was new in 86 until Merthyr transport ceased operations in 89
Gardner engined?
Got a few recordings of them but none on this video. Got kickdown too
