In 1963, the steamer Fleurus caught fire and was sinking with an entire circus menagerie on board, including their cast of dozens of circus animals. The more the fire department fought the flames, the more the ship rolled to its side. This was a race against time to save the animals on board, while also making sure to keep people safe from the deadly animals.
This is the story of one terribly unlucky band of performers, their clunky old ship, and the heroic action of the locals and fire department of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia.
The Kelly and Miller Brothers Circus had just purchased the SS Fleurus to transport that large circus of performers and wild animals around North America, planning to do an inaugural circuit around Nova Scotia, staging shows in Digby, Yarmouth, Shelbourne, and Liverpool, before moving on to Newfoundland. After the Yarmouth performance, a fire broke out aboard the vessel, jeopardizing the hundreds of animals on board.
Also discussed is the wreck of the Royal Tar in 1836.

it's so pretty seeing nature reclaim the ship in the summer like that. Whatever happens to it doesn't erase the history or make it any less important. The information can still be in a museum and mean something. I'd rather that, preserve the impactful research done, and only that, than restore the ship itself...it was built as some rich dude's yacht and later used as a weapon. Seeing it peaceful filled with greenery is the ideal outcome. People should spend that money housing and feeding others who need it when so many are struggling during this economic and housing crisis. Not on restoring some long lost ghost ship. it'd be a waste. we can preserve history without clinging so hard onto the tangible things that come with it. everything is lost to time eventually, and seeing it happen gradually is kinda beautiful tbh.

I honestly can’t believe this story and the drastic difference to other ship sinking in that era. Wonder what ever happened to all those men who selfishly killed off the women and children of that vessel for themselves. Did conscious ever get them and put a pistol to themselves? Or truly psychopathic and never thought of it again.

I am Canadian from southwestern Ontario enjoy your content. Two boats that might interest you are the Boblo Boats and would make a interesting review from your channel. The Amusement Park was Canadian Boblo Island with a long history which closed in early 1990s.I have seen videos and News coverage from Detroit. The River Boats the SS Ste .Claire and the Columbia from Detroit. THere is old commercials and think work continues on the Ste Claire after a fire in 2018. Be a nice trip for you and your wife.I remember the Park but always wanted to take the boat ride from Detroit.

On the Battleship New Jersey channel, they talk about the potential for hull thinning where the water's surface rubs the hull. Is that just a saltwater / brackish water issue, or do the museum ships of the Great Lakes have to be mindful of such damage too?

Well told story. You have a talent for mixing the technical with the tragic with the individual dramas taking place within chaos and confusion. Focusing on Sparkle having a hoof wedged really grabbed my heart and I was glad the poor horse survived. I can't imagine the combination of noises from people, machines, and large frightened animals.

Fascinating! My husband and I made many business trip runs from North Lake Tahoe to Las Vegas; we always passed through Tonopah. I always looked at the The Mizpah building wondering what it was like inside; I now regret not stopping and taking a tour of this grand old hotel. Perhaps it is because the exterior of the Mizpah is quite misleading; you would never guess the grandeur of the interior. Should we ever pass through Tonopah again, we will definitely stay at least one night. Thank you for this very interesting feature of "The Mizpah". Just a note: the name of the hotel always amused me; I did comment to my husband that the name must be Hebrew/Jewish in origin, but I also added that the name's origin was probably just coincidental. How right I was! I've always been interested in old buildings, their history and legends (my father was an architect - go figure 😊). Thank you, this was very interesting and informative. The John Bull is the oldest operable steam locomotive in the US if not the world. The "ROCKET" in the British Railways Museum is a reproduction and there is at least one that is operable. There is an operable reproduction of Trevithick's 1803 PENNYDAREN locomotive in Great Britain.
