Very recently, my desktop PC HDD dies with total loss. Not recently backed up. I panicked, so rushed out and purchased a new desktop which - happens to be on Win-11. I really hated returning to Microsoft, and I heard that Win-11 will take even more of any privacy I had left. I set about trying to reconstruct my vital files from memory, and mail. Meanwhile some bright spark proposed putting a new HDD in the old case, and at my request he loaded Linux Mint 21.3. I got it home and fiddled with that too. Soon I realised that the Linux all I had to do was play around to find what Apps I prefer, create my documents and that was that. The old case with Linux is now my operational desktop while Win-11 languishes gathering dust in the back room. You will know that I recommend Linux over Windows, and for an ancient relic beginner like me, Mint Cinnamon is great.

Firefox was my only browser to go for years and it was great, but lately, it started acting up to the point that I couldn't enjoy it at all. 4K UHD CZcams videos are buffering, freezing, skipping and its a big issue among many users, so no hardware related. I have switched to EDGE and tbh. really like it. Its integrated in windows, you can use most addons/extension you were able to use in Firefox and playback is as smoot is could be. Firefox might be history.

I think Vivaldi is a great choice. I have landed there as well, at least in principle, however, I just don't like the look and feel... Firefox has less features but it is more customizable when it comes to looks, and at this very moment I am using Opera GX. Yes I know it is Chinese now, but it feels just right. Between the "hackerman" theme and shaders, my browsing experience is enjoyable. And before you say "are looks that important?" I would like to ask, why are you decorating your home at all if it isn't? Do you not own an expensive piece of useless furniture that is only there for looks? I thought so.

I've used both distros, I find both pretty good, never had problems with any of them, it's just that I'm too fond of the asthetic of Mint, I'm usually a fan of old looking things, and if I can have something that doesn't look too modern but with modern features, it's a huge factor for me, but both of them is pratically the same in usability and stability, things under the hood, for most people, won't make any difference, they won't even notice, so it's more of just which look better to you, a more old style or a more modern appereance. In the end I can't recommend one over the other, just choose which suits your taste the most.

Linux Mint rocks. I used to use it, as it just felt nicer than Ubuntu. However, with all the chaos of Gnome 3 back in the day, and the Mint guys having to create cinnamon, there was a patch of instability - through no fault of their own. The mess that was Gnome 3, and different DEs not wanting to use whatever version of GTK, I just sought refuge in KDE/Plasma. Linux Mint KDE was great. Sadly, they pulled the plug, as KDE/Plasma wasn't their primary focus. That's fair enough. Wanting to stick with my DE of choice, I then went to Kubuntu. Fortunately, that has stayed largely stable, free of the weird and wonderful things that were being done to Ubuntu. Thank you to Linux Mint, nonetheless

Hi there, I am writing this from Zorin OS 17.1 Lite running on almos brand new Dell XPS 13 i7-12500U and 32 GB RAM ... Why? because the laptop was a Dell Ubuntu Developer version and I don't like the vanilla desktop on Ubuntu... I like the Zorin desktop skin it feels more polished that anything else OUT OF THE BOX sure I can install a lot of Gnome utils to customized the desktop but I don't have the time to play arround ... Thats why I alway recomend Zorin as an alternative to Windows / Mac

What a load of BS this video is. You repeated so many times that even opensuse provides gnome as default - i want to ask do u even use suse at the first place? I use kde plasma opensuse tumbleweed & i want to tell u that opensuse doesn't provide gnome as default, at the time of suse installation it gives 3 DE options to install i e kde, gnome & xfce & we can select any one of the them. I tried suse gnome few times even recently too but it is unproductive & unusable bcz of GNOME & these days u cant even theme gnome bcz of libadwaita, even with extensions there is always some major problems with UI, so gnome today is highly unusable DE for individual home users. GNOME is good for enterprises bcz they hv no need to customise it n they need very simple UI but this is not the case with majority home users & esp. to developers. For these reasons alone people like myself switched to plasma for good. Also this video seems more like a dirty propaganda to promote GNOME.

InfinitelyGalactic: Zorin OS Pro is Gnome, and Linux Mint doesn't have a Gnome, so this wasn't a good comparison. I think the best way that you could have done this comparison would be Zorin OS Lite versus Linux Mint Xfce. Therefore it would be Zorin's Xfce versus Linux Mint's Xfce. I have Linux Mint Xfce on this laptop, and I have Zorin Lite on my other laptop. Both operating systems look beautiful (out of the box). Most of the time I just use what they give me under appearance and add my own wallpaper, and boom! Gorgeous! If you don't like it you can always change it! You'd be surprised what you can do with one theme, one icon pack, one wallpaper, and one plank. You can make it look totally different. It is absolutely amazing what you can do. Some people even change their cursor. Others change the appearance of their terminal. Just use your imagination! BTW: The application you were mentioning is called timeshift, and it has saved my a__ atleast one time.

Too much wasted screen space in trying to look pretty. It was appealing when i saw i on youtube but not when i booted it. Then tried mint and im very impressed with customization! since i was windows power user not surprised additional customization is immediately appreciated! I still havent solved low framerate in ui, mouse cursor lag, youtube on fullscreen low framerate but mint seems to suit me very well for a first day! Mint feels almost like home very fast

Joplin & Obsidian Been using Joplin for years and years. Super flexible and powerful. I use it as my "second brain," but more importantly, I use it to organize my writing projects (poetry, short stories, memoir, novels). It's perfect for compiling research and for writing the works themselves. I have had zero issues syncing Joplin across two desktops and my phone. FYI. Obsidian (proprietary) is a similar program many people bring up in the same conversations (Join and Obsidian have nearly identical functionality). It too is powerful & reasonably flexible. I have used both Joplin & Obsidian and, though it has its merits, Obsidian just isn't as powerful nor flexible when compared to Joplin, but you would probably have to be a power user to care. What Obsidian does have is a smoother interface and its Canvas feature is killer. In fact, I keep Obsidian around just to play with ideas using the Canvas feature. (Note that Obsidian's Kanban feature is superior as well, I'll give them that.) But that's it. I use Joplin for everything else.

Web browsing. A boring topic, I know. But … I use an obscene number of browsers. - Firefox is primary driver (Multi-Account Containers is a killer feature) - Vivaldi for my zillion cloud-based spreadsheets that are always open (work related) - Chrome for Android and Facebook chat only. Ha! - LibreWolf for one-off lookups and things. - TOR for occasional things. Heh.
