Those trees arent going to die, in a couple of years (around 8-9 if im correct) their bark will fully regrow and be harvested again they are typically harvested multiple Times during their lifetime. Tree bark primary funtion is to protect the tree prom parasited and other external threats so besicly they act like our foreskin, asuming those people are protecting the trees from those from those things they should stay healthy (which i assume they prefer given that only healthy and prospering trees produce high quality bark).

Nah, it regenerates every 8 or 9 years. The tree gives the better quality corks after the 3º or 4º cut, +30 years.

@@EngineerAndro thanks; a huge relief that they are not killing the trees. From childhood, i remember for some trees, if you cut a ring of bark from it, it dies .

It actually helps the tree getting healthier and stronger. ;) It helps the tree regenerate stronger barks after each harvest. (out with the old obsolete protection layer, and on with the new better one)

It will continue to regenerate, the tree lives on average 150 years.

@Krista Austin if the process is done properly this does no harm to the tree, and they will live their lifecycle naturally. Not having bark does make the trees a little more susceptible to fire, but fire is never good anyway. There are numerous cork trees with more than two centuries of age.

Stef Styl the Cork grows backup again and in 9 years time it will have the same thickness as it had, and it will be ripe for another harvest. The method does not harm the tree. Thanks to this industry the tree is protected in the country.

Of course not! Those portuguese cork oaks are already quite old and have been harvested several times, and will be again within 9 years.
