Hey everybody! In this episode, I mock up the 2" drag exhaust and try to figure out how to mount the battery box. Because I'm doing the XLH conversion, I need to finish trimming the cam cover, so the electric start will fit before I can mount the battery box and oil tank... I also need a few more rubber isolators to get the job done. We will see you on the next one... Easy.

I recommend a test drive if you can, or at least sit on it. They cost 6k in the end, so I think it's worth riding it or sitting on it. I think you would love it for its agility and handling.

    This is the first video of yours I've seen, so I don't know what all you have for the bike. If you're starting with a stock XLCH and converting it to XLH electric start, it requires changing a lot of parts. The sprocket cover is different, as is the oil tank, battery box, and exhaust. You have 2 choices for sprocket cover, one with the cutout for the starter and the kicker support bushing, and one without the bushing if you are going to remove the kicker. You have to change the battery box because the starter requires a larger battery and this doesn't leave room for the stock, square oil tank. At least these are changes required on a 72'Sporty. I went back and watched ep2. It looks like you have the oil tank and battery box you need for electric start. I have a 72 XLCH that I am converting to XLH for my wife.

    • @icemanfiveoh
      @icemanfiveoh Před 21 dnem

      Thanks for the comment! Since I don't have most of those parts, I don't have to change them! I have a kidney oil tank, so that should work. I'm going to order an XLH battery box, and I don't have exhaust either. The one thing I do know is that I'm going to have to clearance the cam cover for the starter. If I have to do the sprocket cover as well, then I'll do that. I had to go into the primary area to replace the clutch cable, so it wasn't a big deal to rip apart the clutch and get a ring gear welded on.

    • @icemanfiveoh
      @icemanfiveoh Před 21 dnem

      Nice. You saw a battery box? I don't think I have one... I have the whole starter assembly, though. Sounds like you might have some good tips and tricks based on what you are doing. If you think of anything else that I should be aware of, let me know! Thanks again for the comment!

    • @jerrylong381
      @jerrylong381 Před 21 dnem

      @@icemanfiveoh I didn't see a battery box, but I thought you said, in ep2 that you had a large battery box also. The rear brake may be an issue since they went to left side brake in 74, so your frame won't have the tube for the brake rod shaft to go through. Personally I would go with the juice rear brake as you already have to get a wheel, and will have to switch swing arm for mechanical. Either way you will need frame mods. if you want mid controls. A mount for a brake pedal/master cylinder for left side hydraulic, or a sleeve for mechanical. You might see if you can get forward controls that are made for left side mechanical brake that use a cable for the brake. I think those were available at one time. Or get a set and alter them for a master, then run a steel brake line back to the left side in front of the swing arm and go to rubber line from there to a caliper. You wouldn't hav to mod the frame that way. Setting up mid controls might be a real pain. But I've never done it. I'm an old fart and only have email. If you give me yours, I will give you mine.

    FYI: If I'm not mistaken, the plumbers putty you used was the 'stain-free' type, not the standard putty. Stain-free one is oil-free and is for natural surfaces (stone counter tops, etc.). That could have an effect on how it works vs regular putty. Just mention it for future viewers. Listening to the sound of your hand on the dirty side of the car vs the bar'd side, I'd say you need to have a word with whomever washed your car as that sounded like sandpaper and no where close to even just regular clean! LOL!

  • @KeithBillington-wn1rt

    that throttle cable looks backwards. all my bikes have the hard 90 on the handle bar side. run cleanly down the bar and frame per manual of a stock bike.

    • @icemanfiveoh
      @icemanfiveoh Před 22 dny

      The one side that has the 90 is the Mikuni end. The other side has the ball for the throttle. I solved the issue of it coming out funny from the throttle by getting a cable that has a 90 on the throttle side. I thought it was weird too when I got the cable. Thanks for the comment!

  • @Vics2CarGarage
    @Vics2CarGarage Před 23 dny

    Don't worry about the look of the cable till you get the lights on the front. It isn't hard to make your own cables. That is what I do for my bikes. Keep up the good work brother. P.S. I have a box of sockets that I have bought by mistake.

      It is an aftermarket muffler. It’s a cheap Amazon exhaust. It’s a bit louder than stock but not too loud. Here is a link to one that is pretty much identical to the one I bought. The one I got is no longer available, but this is pretty much exactly the same. a.co/d/6DiRvTD

    Hi. Thats not your kick start, that's your shifter. '73 is R hand shift. Kicker is long shaft coming out towards back of R side motor. Goes through sprocket cover. If vin starts with 3A you have XLH (estart only). If vin starts with 4A you have xlch (kick only). The only year Harley Factory put both on a bike was '67. Individuals could have a kicker installed on an e-start bike at dealership for extra $ or do it themselves. in '73, Harley made the cases the same for both variants hence the XLCH would have a backing plate cover to where the starter would mount on the XLH. IMO, ditch the S&S knockoff. Get a Mikuni VM or Bendix. Get a manual. FSM is best. Get a parts book. Good luck. Ironheads are addictive

    • @icemanfiveoh
      @icemanfiveoh Před měsícem

      Yeah. Took me a minute to figure that out. I have both a parts catalog and a service manual and have been using them to order parts. It’s a little tough because of all the different year parts. The motor is for sure a 73 and the frame is a 77. I'm still unsure of the front end. I know that the showa front end was from like 76 to 82, but something is weird with the triple tree... These bikes are totally different from the Japanese bikes I'm used to working on. But I am making progress and learning a bunch as I go. I appreciate the recommendation on the carb. I'll have to look into that. Thanks for the history and the comment!

      So, can you make your kick only also an electric start, and what would that cost?

    • @jeffysue
      @jeffysue Před měsícem

      @@jamesbutler134 yes, you can add an electric start. Some mods may be necessary cause he has a mismatched frame/motor. Not sure what oil tank he has as they were different for XLH and XLCH. Mainly comes to clearance issues and some other odds and ends.

    • @icemanfiveoh
      @icemanfiveoh Před měsícem

      I was given a full electric start setup and I just got a ring gear for the clutch. Last time I checked It was at least 300 for the electric start. I'm not trying to blow out what's left of my knee. I have a kidney tank, but it might not work since I'm going electric start. But my buddy that sold me the parts said he has the other tank. I'm going to have to get the bigger battery box, so I might have to use the other. Odds and ends is right. That's the beauty of this project, I'm gonna have to adapt on the fly... Thanks for the comments!

    • @icemanfiveoh

      That's odd. How tight was the one pipe to push into the other? Also, there should be a clamp that tightens around where the 2 pipes meet. Did you install it and tighten it up real good? Trying to get as much info as possible...

    i know this was a year ago but i recently gotten this type of model (not the modified bluetooth one) and the audio keeps cutting and goes from low to high volume without even tuning the volume left or right. as well and static noises when playing my brand new cds and i’m asking for help on what to do, and is the antenna supposed to stick out so much?

    • @icemanfiveoh
      @icemanfiveoh Před měsícem

      The antenna is supposed to be long like that. It sounds like you volume pot is dirty. With the power OFF, you could try pouring some 99% Iso alcohol into the pot and moving it back and forth a lot. The wiper on the pot is probably dirty. It would explain the static and the volume jumping up and down. If you try what I suggested, let it air out a while before you power it back up. They also do sell sprays that can help, like QD electronic cleaner. You can get that at just about any hardware or auto parts store. It should be plastic safe. Don't use carb cleaner or anything like that. It will melt plastic. Good luck!
