Hello, my name is Michael LaMattina. I am the principal percussionist with the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra and the director of percussion studies at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. These videos are a mix of performances by my students and myself. I aim to present music that is lesser known to percussionists, while still having some familiar music up as well.

Thanks for posting this! What do you have on the head of your tambourine - is it moleskin for dampening, grip, or another purpose?
Thanks for watching! The moleskin is for dampening, it takes out the high pitch, residual hum that, I find, tends to be distracting. It does also give some extra comfort for the grip.
I was dozing on my lunch break and imagined this as a regimental march for the US civil war. It worked in my head.

This excerpt is new to me. Are the rolls supposed to be continuous, or should it be distinct rolls?
Thanks for watching! In the third mvt the rolls are connected, fairly standard interpretation. Some people add a metric accent at the beginning of each roll, which is also nice and makes sense. I’ve always played them connected and have never been asked by the conductor for any separation in the phrasing.

Thanks for watching! There is not a click track. I set the delay to the value specified by the composer and then practiced at the indicated tempos in order for the delay effect to lock in with the rhythms he wrote. Took a lot of practice but came off pretty effectively.

I am using an Adams professional Glock
Are there sheets for this?
Yes. I got the public domain version from Hans Zimmer music off Musescore. It’s the piano arrangement. I voiced it for mallets and added some percussion to it.

What is that nifty little foot mount thing? Did you buy that or piece it together? And is it adjustable in height? I need one!
Thanks for watching! I made that myself. Used an old snare stand base and a sofa foot for the top where I put my left foot.
Height can be adjusted, but I keep it flush with the stand collar.
