Amateur Radio Go Kit Demo
In this video I explain the details of the amateur radio go kit that I built for portable use during field day, special events, and emergency deployments. The case is a Gator GRB-4U case. Everything else is custom made by myself.

Thanks for the video, Im preparing something similar. For HF trasnceiver and antena/bat.
Where did you buy the Front hinged panel from?
Amazon. The specific one I purchased is currently unavailable, but just search for “4U hinged Rack panel
Good job! I have my ft-891 go box with tuner Built into a bucket. I am making my vhf kit into another matching bucket to sit next to my hf box. I have a 50 ah power queen battery for power to be in a plano box. I have a 6u mobile rack For future project. I have a wood working shop in my basement If I want to make a rack like yours. Suggestion I have a mega-watt 30a computer type power supply.. It is small cheap and no rf hash. It is dead quiet on my ft891!
That is a well-thought-out go kit with a very detailed explanation. Thanks for putting this out.
as a FNG ham, i reeeaaally like this setup. KQ4OTE
Nice set up.
This is incredible. Probably the nicest one I've seen.
Lovely goat kid 😂😂😂
I Love your Setup Its Really Nice
This is a particularly nice kit. I like many of the builds out there, but this one is really in line with what I'm looking to build soon. well done.
I love it
Nice job, I’m thinking I want to make something like yours, looks good.
Very nice go box. Well thought out 73
think you could get it past TSA as a carry on? You'd have to have a smaller LiFePO4 batt, but I'm making a QRP to 50 watt go case and hope to also carry it on for travel.
Great set up! I was looking at the same Gator bag. I was was looking at the 3U but maybe the 4U would be better.
Jeah get a LiFePo battery!!
Where do you get the swing door/face plate that works with rack mount
Very well done gave me great ideas thanks de WB8IDY Swansboro, nc
Really nice work, very inspiring 👍
So satisfying. Well done.
congratulations for the practical and functional equipment, your video is very interesting. '73 de IZ2TXQ
Nice job!
Excellent information and video. Thanks! I’m a new Tech and this is a bit like drinking from a fire hose, but it gives me a good vision for a build.
I don't know if anybody has commented on this but why do you have the radios connected to a power supply versus directly attaching them to the radio? The battery must be a 12v one and the radios operate off of 12v. Using a power supply actually wastes a little power. Plus, definitely swap out the battery with a lithium iron phosphate one. And get rid of the power supply, not needed if running off of 12v. You can always attach a small inverter if need be.
There are many times where I operate for 24 hours or more (field day, disaster releif, etc. the power supply allows the kit to operate indefinitely with shore power or a generator, where the battery has a limit before it runs out. The solar panels recharge them to a certain extent, but not enough to keep up with HF transmissions or constant use (like field day).
Cool kit ! I would keep power below 10 watts when running that short antenna right at head level 12 inches away. Might end up cooking yourself.
Buenas ideas para ponerlas en practica, gracias por el video. 73 CO5RMM.
Exceptional! Thanks for sharing your approach of your second iteration to inspire thoughtful approaches in go box builds for others!
Nice bag brother good job !
Awesome job!
very nice kit David.regards from the UK.
i have the bag where did you get the insert plate? thks
This is the fist Go Kit that I would consider building. Most everything I've seen has been way too heavy. I would switch out the battery for a Bioenno though. Great job! - Mike - KI8R
Nice build!
You gave me some really good ideas for my build thank you.
Nice rig, good presentation, it gave me a bunch of good ideas for my own rig. I'm just starting out so this will be a leg up. Thanks.
You expecting a phone call?
Nice setup. Your voices sounds familiar do you get on the 325😂
🤣👎👎👎👎
Another no code extra..
"Hey Look, another dinosaur that knows nothing about new technology and only knows how to make beeping sounds". 😜😂 Welcome to the modern world where simple beeps have been replaced by Digital modes, VOIP, IPs, Satellites, and Internet links, and where transistors have been replaced by software. I'm sure you hate it, but you will be fine, I promise. 73s.
@@ke4tin Yea, and if you had to figure an LC constant you'd shit your pants. Step off no nothing newb!!!!!
@@radarwill LOL. Thanks for the Newbie compliment, in my almost 30 years in the hobby and in the field, being an electronics engineer, I've actually had to calculate quite a few. But while I'd love to go back to being a young newbie again, at least I can find comfort in knowing I did not turn into an angry crotchety old man. turning into an angry old man can be very sad. They spend their days out there desperately trying to find people they don't even know and trying to make them as angry as they are. I find them hysterical and sad at the same time. I truly hope folks like that find the peace and self esteem they need to try to enjoy the last little bit they have left of their lonely life. You have yourself a great day sir! 73s and I hope you enjoy the hobby for your remaining years, even if the world has not ended up the way you hoped. Enjoy your paddle, and keep working on those Inductors and Capacitors for your resonance circuits, There aren't too many of us hams still around that build our own stuff and repair our own equipment. It's a shame more "Angry Old Hams" don't channel that energy into becoming elmers and teaching others, rather than being jerks and trying to insult people who they think are new to ham radio and trying (unsuccessfully) to chase them away.
@@ke4tin EE huh. Where did you get your degree? Online? I think you are a know nothing liar!!
@@radarwill HAHAHA. Well, than I guess by definition, that just made YOU the "Know nothing liar". OK, well, this has been fun, but I've wasted as much effort as I am willing to invest in this lovely chat. Sometimes, the game just gets boring and it's time to walk away and find something more fun to do. Good day sir, and good luck with that problem. 😎 [the host has stopped listening]
Great kit. Do you happen to have a build list?
Mas david apa kabar?
Excellent build!! Very well done... 73 de N3LUD
Hi Mr.David, Nice to Know you! Greetings from Sri Lanka~
lol, I did a double take at your call. I know an AA5DF.
well i must admit that ive always laughed about people making radio stuff in these cases but now i really wanna do it 2
Hi again, I am interested in this box and haven’t been able to find a hinged front panel like you have. Where did you find that panel? Thanks, 73 de KI5HXM EDIT: I have found some on Amazon. Does your box use the 4U or 6U blank hinged panel?
This is the one I bought on Amazon. It currently says it’s unavailable, but maybe it will come back in stock soon, or you can search for the same one somewhere else: StarTech.com 4U Hinged Rack Panel - Solid Blanking Panel for 19-inch Server Racks - Tool-less Filler Panel (RKPNLHS4U), Black a.co/d/8JjVEdx
@@ke4tin thanks. I saw that after I asked. I have seen some that are available. My goal in this is to have a radio kit that works for QTH and portable. Thanks again. Where are you located? I am in north Texas. All the best 73 de KI5HXM
That is an incredibly tidy and well-built go-kit, David! Thanks for the video. It gave me lots of great ideas for improving my own kit (which is built into a 2U Gator case, incidentally).
Awesome kit! Good job!
Nice rig. You gave me some great ideas. Thanks.
Well thought design.
