Kayak Camping 20 Miles Alone on the Colorado River
zhlédnutí 17KPřed 2 lety
From Willow Beach to Arizona Hot Springs campground it's a 16-mile round trip by kayak along the Colorado River in Black Canyon, Lake Mead National Park. I Filmed the first scene on a Canon but for the convenience I used a GoPro HERO9 Black for 99% of the footage. Although, I'd like to include more work in the future using the better equipment. 00:00 Intro 03:10 Launching the kayak at Willow Be...

      I am a bit of a perfectionist. I spent a year studying camera movement and lighting before I uploaded my first video. But someone recently told me it’s better to get things done than to make these perfect. I’ll be uploading another video soon!

      Yeah I know. I was tired and not paying attention to the kayak - and I put way too much focus on the cameras haha. I’m actually going to take a few paddling classes from @DesertAdventuresinArizona so I can learn how to hold the paddle right side up, and eventually how to roll the kayak.

    Skunks, rats, raccoons live at campgrounds because they KNOW that people leave food out for them to eat. Snakes and coyotes live near campgrounds because they can eat the rats and skunks and food humans leave out. Pack your food safe and away from your tent, let them be and when they realize that you did NOT drop anything, they will leave for another camp.

    Take a container of water away from the river, to was dishes, hands and what not. Not in the river. Dump water under a Bush and let it filter through the ground.

    • @KyleBarton
      @KyleBarton Před 2 lety

      I like your technique much more than what I was shown. I’ve taken some ancient survival pointers from the local kayaking tour guides. They just use rocks and the river to clean their dishes. I thought my biodegradable soap would be ok, but I imagine the ground to act as a filter is a better option for the water quality.

      There are shuttle services with a kayak include if you want to launch at Hoover Dam. I believe they leave from a location in Las Vegas. As far as Willow Beach Marina there are kayak rentals on site. You can rent them for a day or for multiple days for camping.

      @@smokeydog6311 Holy crap you are right. I am holding it upside down through quite a bit of that footage. At 12:40 the paddle is back to being right side up. I must have been paying way to much attention to the GoPro. The kayak was very overloaded as it was my first time taking camera gear outdoors, and this is how I learned I need a 16ft kayak for these types of adventures. The fatigue afterwards was extreme. My previous coached experience is on a 6-person outrigger canoe with a single paddle. I tried to sign up at the Las Vegas Rowing Academy but they want a minimum of $400 a month for 1-2 days a week. I plan on making it to their $25 demo weekends in the meantime while I negotiate the funding.

      @@smokeydog6311 It turns out the Las Vegas Rowing Academy has a 2-day rowing class coming up next weekend for $25 and I am now signed up! I previously waited for one for 6 months and gave up trying. So your timing is excellent. Thank you for that.

      @@KyleBarton Look into a whitewater kayak class such as Otter Bar Lodge, etc. Don't think you will find as much benefit from Rowing as that's a different technique. Lean forward at the waist. Do not recline while paddling. Your foot pegs should be adjusted so that your knees/upper thighs make firm contact with underside of deck & you can push tail bone into seat backrest. These are important control contacts. Insert paddle blade into water at less of a vertical angle. Hold paddle slightly below shoulder height. Slight bend at elbows. Rotate your torso from the shoulders left/right vs. using elbows. Elbows should not bend much throughout paddle stroke. If arms begin to burn, you may not be rotating torso enough. Gently plant the paddle blade into the water. Try not to splash or disturb the water. Wait split second for bubbles to disperse so blade will "stick", pull yourself forward, repeat. Hold paddle shaft firmly in right hand, relaxed in left. After the right blade exits the water, rotate right hand up, while allowing paddle shaft to rotate in left hand as the left blade prepares to slice cleanly into the water. Right hand assumes normal position as it moves forward & you prepare right blade to enter water. This technique builds power & will cut fatigue in half or better. Lean downstream when approaching obstacles. This tilts the bottom of the boat upward & allows the current to flow under the hull instead of rolling you over. I like a 17+ foot hull in the 22"-24" wide range with a shallow arch design. Eddyline makes a nice boat, but I prefer Current Designs. Keep a bilge pump on the deck in front of you. Try to load the bulk of your heavy gear on bottom of boat to keep center of gravity low. Do NOT learn to rely upon a rudder. Rudders are to assist during abnormal weather conditions only. Good luck.

    Hello Kyle this was a nice kayak camping trip. That was a nice 20-mile paddle you did. Me and my family ( wife , 6th boys , & granddaughter ) we all love kayak camping. On Memorial weekend we got plans to do a 30 Mile kayak camping trip with some friends and their family. Kyle I have a question? I like the sandals you were wearing wow kayaking. What kind of sandals are those you are wearing? I am a chubby fat dude that have to kayak Barefooted 👣 style because i have big very very extremely wide feet sz15 6E wide with very chubby fat wide toes that are equally straight across making my foot very very wide at 6 1/2 inches wide from my big toe to my lil toe. My foot outgrew shoes , socks , & boots when i was 18 years old & flip flops is the only footwear that will barely and i mean barely fit my foot because of my toes are wider than the flip flops straps. I am looking for a pair of sandals to wear for kayaking so I don't have to walk across the rocks in the water barefooted 👣 cuz it's starting to hurt my feet now. I like how you could wear the sandals in the water and then wear them for hiking too. What an awesome trip man thank you for sharing this video.
