Mosaic Damascus 'Fukuro Yari"
Hello everyone, this is my design for the 48 hour dagger challenge. The build will be based on the Fukuro Yari spear head.
During the Yari's service (700's through to the 1700's or nara to edo period) the weapon was mainly used as a thrusting and slashing weapon, a formidable weapon giving it's weidler an impressive range of attack - with overall length ranging from 1 metre up to 6 metres.
As with many long weapons it was adapted over time, with the spear head being removed or the handle cut down to make short sword and 'dagger' type weapons that could be utilized for close combat. In combination with jujitsu it would have equally been a devastating engagement. Examples of the 'omi yari', 'Su yari' and 'Fukuro yari' can be seen from the 16th century.
During my trip to Japan, I visited as many museums as I could, learning as much as possible from the many exhibitions featuring weaponary from as early as the 300's leading up to the mid 90s. The range of artifacts from bronze through to steel was overwhelming, I took hundreds of photos of the Katana, Wakisashi, Tanto etc.
The video is of an Omi Yari a bit longer :)
The materials used will be...
Ebony, copper and mosaic Damascus steel, the mosaic I made last week to remain in the sole authorship.
Well time is up and I almost got this guy completed, the final piece of the puzzle was in the heat treatment polish and etch of the mosaic pommel nut, so I failed to complete it in the allotted time of 48 hours, and that's fine.
In my eyes I have achieved what I wanted for this year's dagger comp, this challenge is a great way for the maker to take risks and push those boundaries in what they are capable of, I would do a lot of things differently but that's always how it is,
Big thank you to @blackdragonforge for keeping that breath of creativity and passion alive, I had fun this year and if you're ever thinking about participating in it, just do it.
Also a mention to all the makers in Aotearoa NZ and Australia for participating we definitely 'punch above our weight" in the South Pacific and it is so awesome to see.
Thanks again I hope you enjoyed the build

    I'm about to buy one exactly like yours, except it has no motor mount on it. At which RPM does the motor run, and how many kilowatts?

    • @StackhouseKnives
      @StackhouseKnives Před 3 měsíci

      Hey there I'm In New Zealand the motor specs are 3.7 kw 3 phase 400v, motor running approximately 980 rpm, I believe it's a 6 pole motor, I hope this helps and if you have any other questions feel free to ask

      @@StackhouseKnives Awesome, thank you so much! I have one more question as of now actually. Under the brass ring/clutch-linkage is a plate with mounting holes for something that might function as a brake pad or something. Do you know if there's supposed to be a piece of wood there or something else?

    • @StackhouseKnives
      @StackhouseKnives Před 3 měsíci

      Hey yes there's a block of wood that's the brake, you could make them from wood or rubber
