I'm no expert sushi chef but I find sushi a fun and tasty meal to make while hiking. Enjoy! Level 1 Hiker: noob with all the mistakes still ahead of them. Carrying a kitchen sink plus another spare one just in case. Sore. Level 2 Hiker: Ultra light syndrome. Overcorrected from Lvl 1. Selfish, but somehow also the camp charity case. Constantly borrowing (but never taking) from Lvl 1 Hikers. Constantly looking for Lvl 1 converts to UL. Utterly useless in an emergency situation, even their own. Level 3 hiker: the trail elders. Have everything they need and nothing they don't. Quiet. Who the Lvl 1s should be listening to, but Lvl 2s wont let them get a word in. Perfectly balanced between comfort and weight. The people you want around in an emergency situation.
What did you do with the bikes? Give em back? Lol
Great Video! Can you explain more about the cold soak method and ingredients you would use for the Sushi?
I know you haven't uploaded in a while but please can we get a tarp build guide? looks amazing!!
where did you get the mini groundhogs for $20? Seem more like $70
my pack is 3-4kg + water which duplicates weight
Well done . But first on the list would be a ELB there are thousands of SAR callouts in NZ every year and its a hell of a drain on a little country .Numerous death often due to hypothermia many bodies have never been recovered it snows even in high summer in the high country. Often you meet people with very little food or cold weather gear which can be a big problem when your trapped by flooded rivers.
Great Video, subbed. If I may, just one comment: Don't put too much energy addressing negativity around UL, people who get it will get it and for others - well, you won't change their opinion anyways. Also a request: More details on DYI!
Really nice video! I like the lightweight and lowkey approach, also those beaches looked great and it looks like a very nice terrain, well done!
Zac love your simple approach - I love thru hiking- hope to do the Bib soon. Where is your next big thru hike? Tel
Vegemite toast - yeah saw that! 🎉
food/cooking?
hi how did you travel with tent stakes and trekking poles? did you need to check them in or was it allowed on carry on? thanks
Hey, they're check in items. I flew with carry on and bought my stakes and poles once I arrived in Auckland
Great food for thought!
Did the AT back in 2003, with a near identical set up (Golight Breeze, pack and a few other things that look in the same stream, your thoughts I would echo-$, water, rain gear, safety). I read Ray Jardeen in high school and it really made sense. Anyway, after 20 years I’m planning the next big one and found this helpful-might need to finally make the pack!
Oh !!! I was in Nike shorts too, my only choice these days.
Great. I'm curious about gear you need
I can't believe Melissa was singing the peach song at the end. I just finished the cdt and my trail family had an inside joke about that song and peaches in general.
Hey mate great series, not too much waffling on just on point, loved the UL load out, was the sleeping bag and bivy/tarp enough for those cold wet nights? Considering a similar time of year just don't want to have to pull out for something as simple as a sleep system, hope you had fun and enjoyed your time out there and hope those 40 beers went down a treat
Nice demo thanks. I find it hard to believe though that anyone would be jealous of sushi made with instant parboiled rice.
Great video!
Nice rb sounds, with the dose to finish it off. Lol
That Seinfeld-esque bass full was sick. Subscribed.
Thanks for this video. Always great to get new ideas. I live in Canada, northern Ontario, a bit different in terms of climate and vegetation and fauna. I also like using Altra's without too much padding. I am definitely not a do it yourselfer. I appreciate your skills. Also I am turning 74 soon so I may want to increase my comfort level slightly, though I don't like carrying any electronics. Best wishes to you.
Brilliant video ❤ well done for this 👏🏽
This is great mate. You’ve got a really engaging personality, and very genuine. Love seeing a fellow QLD’ers perspective on the trail.
Were you spending much time at camp or was it mostly either moving or being in your shelter? Just curious what temps the decathlon is good in if you're not moving, sitting around having food etc. I've got an Atom LT but the thing is on the way out after sloggin a decade out of it. It seems clever to have a really warm insulating layer that can be paired with a lighter sleeping bag and also a bivy, seems like it could cater to a super wide variety of temperatures and conditions, from only the bivy or the jacket in hotter temps to the bag and the bivy in mid and all three down to freezing.
I was mostly moving or in my quilt! The winter daylight hours were >10hr, so I would walk every minute of them, then a few hours in camp each night. The Decathlon is a fantastic budget puffy. Comfortable down to 5c, but will get you below freezing if you pair it with a fleece or rainjacket. You're spot on with the adaptive layering system
Sick!
I have an itinerary to do it in 20 days averaging 50km a day. Cam Bostok managed to do it in 21 days and waded through the flooded plains, but watching your effort I think I'm being optimistic. Enjoyed the series. Some great cinematography and you kept it short.
All the best with your hike!
You reminded me in this video why I will be packing a travel umbrella. The extra 200g will be worth it.
Awesome and informative video- especially loved the home made gear! Although I have to admit, having experienced just how unpredictable and cold NZ weather can be, your lack of thermals made me a little nervous 😅
You did really well, 1000km and nothing to eat, especially nothing hot to drink. I’m impressed. 😂
He said base weight
@@B1-66-ER ……. And your point?
Thanks for sharing dude! I’m from Hong Kong and I have few questions to ask. Do you have any alternative options for the tent and backpack? Because this kind of tent is a bit less private for me and The backpack is hard for me to DIY😂 Also, how can you keep your safe? I’m not sure, but how would you do if you meet bear😂thxxx!
What a pleasure to watch your video, in fact the best I have seen on minimalist hiking gear. Super cool that you have made some of your gear too. Love, love, love it!!
Thank you!
That's awesome. Can't do the cold soaking but yeah, confident set up and a weight you could run it with. I'm lightweight comfort, more abou the 7-8kg baseweight, ie pole tent and quilt, full pad etc but really like your tarp and bivvy setup. Also great idea on the mozzie net as a clothes bag, thanks for the idea, saves me a bag and means I get some bug protection.
G'day mate! Just wanted to say I absolutely love your channel and videos, they give me great inspiration as a fairly new Australian hiker. And your cringy but wholesome humour has me rolling ever single time 😂🤣 keep it up champ!! Hope I see you one day out on the trail 😄👍
Great kit dude, you are very tough for having very few luxuries. Cheers from Auckland. I've only got half of my hiking gear and I'm already down 2000 nzd. I'm very tall so I can't cheap out on gear really. I bet you save a lot from making your own kit!
Thank you. It did help.
I would love to see a video about how to sew my own backpack, like yours. Thanks for the video.
i have a question, in 4:34 you show a picture of the polycro groundsheet and it appears to be a poncho shelter, it was yours? could you tell me the model? i want to get a poncho that can be used as a reasonable big tarp and that looks awesome
Congratulations man! Definitely very inspiring, and love your videos. I'm aiming for a N to S thru later this year in September/October, and your videos have helped put everything into perspective. Cheers!
All the best on your hike!
Loving the vids! Where do you buy the materials in oz for making the pack? I’ve been keen to make my own also

Nice one Zac:) Cheap bikes are a revelation
Hi Zac! Your videos are certainly already great, I believe my skills in creating futuristic thumbnails could really complement your content and help you achieve your goals. Would you be interested in discussing this opportunity further?
How do you use your quilt? Do you ever use the straps to attach it to the mat or do you just spread it out like a blanket?
I just button up the footbox if it's cold, and the top stays open. I'm a very very warm sleeper
Love the adventure! Looks awesome! Might have to try it with Chino if dogs are allowed 🤞
You'd be able to do most of it! There's only approx 30km through National Park. It's the best bit though, so maybe do a little day trip out there yourself
Great vid. Thanks for sharing!
Proof that lack of speccy gear shouldn’t get in the way of an adventure, well done 👏 🎉
