Hatching Dragonfly
zhlédnutí 42Před 9 měsíci
This charming video was made by Phil Marshman late secretary of the Frome Video Club in 2016. Sadly Phil passed away earlier this year. The video shows a dragonfly exiting from its Nymph up to its wings spreading and flying away. It also shows the cameras that were used and how the close up shots were achieved using domestic HD cameras.

A day out with friends to the Newt in Somerset exploring the amazing reconstruction of a Roman Villa and museum. Its very well done and it is very interactive, educational and extremely well laid out, ideal for all of the family no matter how old. The staff were excellent, informative and very helpful. There were even "real" Romans to meet us at the villa. All in all an experience not to missed.

I acquired the 1949 Norton ES2 with plunger suspension as a basket case in 2001 It had spent most of its life in the Dorset Gillingham area pulling a sidecar and then left unused in a garden shed. So I decided to have a go at restoring the bike which was quite a challenge. Once restored I rode it for a few years and eventually decided that I wanted a three wheeler so I swopped it for a 1983 Tri...

I would love to visit but the ‘entrance charge’ at nearly £100 per head is outrageous (and no concessions). So you get ‘membership’ and access to other attractions on the estate, but if you live far away that makes no sense. On the other hand if you are local and can easily take advantage of the wider benefits, you get a massive discount. Crazy.

These circa 1960 bikes are extremely popular at the moment largely due to old timers like myself who rode them in their era. It's a combination of nostalgia and engineering beauty. It's difficult to relate to modern bikes entitrely covered in plastic sheeting. But at the time many of us were easily seduced away by the big Japanese bikes eg. Honda's CB750 which emerged in 1969. My late father, who was into bikes all his life (he rode an 'Indian' in the U.K. as early as the 50s) , used to sacastically state, with much exaggeration, that the new Japanese bikes were engineered to 0.25 mm whilst the British bikes - 0.25 inches. But the essence of that statement was nevertheless true. In 10-15 years when most of us old timers (if still around) will at best be riding bath chairs I wonder just how popular these old British bikes will be as I don't see many youngsters expounding their virtues? My present bike? A (year 2000) Honda Valkyrie Interstate. Throw the bad eggs.

I've owned and riden both British and Japanese bikes from the 1960s onwards but it's only the British bikes I love, while the Japanese are more appreciated than loved. Also Motorcycles from all the previous decades to the 1960s are all loved and appreciated by riders who never owned them as youths. Therefore, I expect the younger generation will also love and appreciate these beautiful machines too.

I rode a Venom Clubman back in the 60s. Occasionally I get nostalgic and think of getting an old bike, but then it would hardly get ridden. My 1290 SAS is simply better in all regards.
