With many, many possibilities of all the things you can put in your safe, here are several things you definitely should NOT put in your safe.
Gasoline is a dangerous substance that should be kept away from children and stored safely. However, storing gas in a safe makes it even more dangerous. Although gas is a liquid when we get it out of the pump, it wants to be a gas. Due to its low flashpoint, it evaporates into fumes very quickly. With the smallest spark, those fumes can and will explode. Putting a gas can in your safe traps those fumes inside and invites the possibility of your safe blowing up from the inside and destroying everything else in there as well.
One of the most common chemicals you will find in a household is bleach. When used properly, bleach is an excellent cleaner. But we suggest you never store it in a safe. Bleach can tarnish many metals, especially silver. Your fine jewelry will become ruined. In addition, if you lock up other chemicals in your safe such as ammonia or vinegar and they mix with bleach, they’ll create a fatal gas. So it’s best to keep your bleach far away from other chemicals.
Going all the way back to your elementary science class, plants need light to grow. Putting a plant inside your safe, no matter how important it is to you, will prevent it from growing. What you may not know is that plants release moisture into the air. Putting a plant inside your safe is putting that humidity into your safe which will cause rust and other damage to your valuables.
No matter how annoyed you get and how great of an idea it may seem, NEVER put your kids or your pets inside your safe. It is not a place for “time out”. Chances of suffocation inside a safe are very high and most safes don’t have releases from the inside.
Lastly, it’s your choice but we don’t recommend storing stacks on stacks on stacks inside your safe. Having some emergency cash on hand is excellent and you should definitely do that. But there are some people that will store hundreds of thousands of dollars inside their safe. That may not be the best idea. Remember, banks and credit unions are safe and they’ll give you access to your money.
