We have a lot more information about what is happening in this video on our page. What you saw in this video is a keeper demo where we showcase some behaviors that are voluntary that the animals have learned. They have their regular diets and these are just special treats, like ice cream for us!

It is a pygmy hippo so they are smaller than the ones people think of when they think hippo. He is not as young as you would think! We use positive reinforcement training so everything they do is by choice. We actually have some training videos posted about this.

We love the concern about this beautiful endangered species and we understand the concern. Because of how much attention they need at this young age it aids the keepers in being able to monitor them in a controlled environment to make sure they are nice and healthy. We have one of the most successful cat breeding programs, we have multiple articles written about this which may have good information for you!
