Vanquest Katara 16 | Is it as great as the Javelin?
Hi there,
my thoughts on the Katara 16 from Vanquest. I like Sling Packs and so this one is a bit biased towards that usage. Take it with a grain of salt because as backpack it is far better....

Vertx Commuter 2.0 Sling modification

Hi Guys, just found myself getting annoyed with the Sling setup on the Vertx commuter 2.0. This is just a little update on it and an easy fix, that only took 10 minutes and for it improves the ergonomics tremendously.

This is a truly time tested piece of Gear, but it also remained mostly unchanged for about a Decade. How does it stack up against the Maxpedition Gearslinger Sitka?

This was intended to be a how to video, but while filming it took a few ugly turns and I had to rush it. There will be a remake of this with different materials and more time scheduled for filming. But for now it is a working prototype and good enough to see if it holds up to what I want it to do.....

Thank you for the great detailed review! Your video gave me the much needed information and feel that helped me with my decision to get this bag! I'm really happy with it and It really is EDC perfection.
Nice review. I have several of there bags. All of them are well made. They’re all on the small side of what there liter capacity claims compared to every bag I’ve ever owned.
Great review thank you
How is the weight on the knife?
Great review. Thanks
I might do this to mine too, I hate the flipper. I actually think these knives look good as they wear!
Went the 511 store and examined thr Moab 8 and Moab 10. Th 10 is so large if I packed it full, it woukd be too much for a sling bag. Might as well just carry a backpack and spread the weight over both shoulders. I chose the 8. Deep CCW pocket that holds my full size 1911. Large enough to carry 2 or 3 books, cigar accoutrement box, water bottles, note pad and pens, eye glass cleaners, asthma rescue inhaler, etc. The 8 just slings on a shoukder very easily.
I previously purchased the MOAB 8 and though I do like it and its build quality is fantastic but being 6’4” (194 cm) felt a bit small for me. The MOAB 10 fits me perfectly. The larger size allows me to have extra space in case I decide to pick something up while walking around but the compression straps allow me to stick with my fairly minimal EDC pack out without the bag being loose and floppy. I suspect frame size will and should play a part in deciding whether to go with the smaller MOAB 8 or the larger MOAB 10.
Great review, it's too bad they are discontinue 😢
Not to my knowledge. They just announced another drop....
I got the Entity 19 which has the AGR style side pockets with the expandable zippers. I wish they had put them on the larger models too... Anyway I like the clean look.
Completely off topic, but are you Scandinavian? Im trying to place your accent and settling on either Swedish or Norwegian.

Is Ferrocerium Lighter Flint Stone replaceable on this lighter?
Just ordered one of these. Thoughts after your 9 months of ownership? I’m getting the wood handle engraved.
I don't have it anymore. But for the time I had it there were no regrets, considering the price point. My daily has been a S90v miguron and I have not felt the need to switch back to anything else .....
@@corvinousedc any reason in particular of why you no longer own it? Just didn’t carry it enough? In my eyes, it’s a “gentleman’s folder”. Which will be its intended use for me. Suits etc.
You are right it is a gentlemans folder, and it does that really well. I did not carry it enough. Perhaps due to the steel. Compared to even 154 cm it needs more looking after to the point where i just picked other knives rather than being annoyed with the edge. Any 20cv will hold up 3times as long, my 90sv or zdp189 knives i can plain forget about and still have them do the job ...@Glocks.Scotch.and.wristwatch
Who pays over $200+ for a backpack??
I do. It is pricey, but given the materials used and the durability in tough usage scenarios it is on par with many other top tier packs. Can you get away with less? Sure. But filling up my fuel tank costs me 85$, and that will not even last a week. Going to KFC will set me back 50$ with 3 people. It is all relative and in relation to other factors.
I assume the wicks and flint are interchangeable with a Zippo as well? Or are these components proprietary? I saw that Exotac sells wick and flint, but I was curious as to the compatibility between these and Zippos. Thanks!
The flints are interchangeable, have not tried the wicks...
ZIPPO wick too short and small in diameter. ZIPPO flint is fine.
We get it… 3 mins talking about molle!!
Yeah, got a bit carried away. There are shorter and better videos out there for sure!
Hey man great review of the pack. You've got some nice accompanying gear like the Maxpedition and Sealskinz stuff that I will definitely check into.
Thx, Sealskinz are great. Indeed.
Those mico pouches, were can I get them in black?
I appreciate you mentioning the material. The slight shine on the black has me nervous but I’m the same as you with not wanting it to look to military inspired. But multicam black is gonna have to do for now
Man! Thanks for the idea of keeping a Dry Bag in there! I will definitely be getting 1 for mine! And you’re correct about that Conceal carry pocket! I have a tendency to over pack mine so it is harder to get the Firearm out but I always have a Firearm on my body anyway so the 1 in that pocket is just a back up!
Yip I think the only ones that get the access to concealed carry right are the guys from Vertex.
Excellent Review! Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
“Stabilizer -strap” is the name usually used for that 3rd strap option, fwiw & IIRC
How is the magnacut doing after owning this for a while…..Does the “lower” hrc make a big difference?
Hi there did not keep it long enough to find out. I have had the miguron glear as a daily for 4 month and have not looked back. The S90v on this one has just reduced my need to look for better to next to nothing. Cheers
I think they are selling an idea without that much thought in it -- Pacsafe bags are designed for anti-theft and security... vertex bags have none of that functionality, slash proofing, etc. The last thing you want is for something in that bag to get stolen.
I agree, however my daily carry does not require any security features.....
The drawbridge straps to the main compartment also tuck in to little pockets if you don't want to use them.
Cheers for pointing that out....
Thank you!! You’re the only person with a review who mentions that it does not stand up. Rules this one out for me as a gym bag
You are welcome, though I imagine the katara would have way to many Organisation Features, too little space, no wet compartment to serve as a really good gym pack.....
I wish they’d do a micro with the horizontal/vertical layout. A lot of my stuff is 5 or 6 centimetres and would just be bunched up in the middle.
I am with you on this one, a lot of shorter items just seem lost in the vertical slots.
By the way, In the case of comparing vertx commuter and Vanquest katara, which one would stand higher in the quality and durability?
They are both top notch, I would say Vertx gets the nod for more humid environments, the water repellent fabric would stand up better...fabric choices and stitching is excellent.
That was a very Useful review which helped a lot for my decision of buying which sling pack 👍🏼✅️
Glad it helped!
Great 👌🏼
Thanks ✌️
I prefer the 6 for edc, the 10 is overkill, but a great bag for other purposes for sure.
Never tried the 6, but if you have a smaller load out it is a good choice!
It's amazing how a company like Vertx, with all it's resources and experience, misses this detail. Nice work.
I agree, but then again I could be missing something as well
I found the webbing side handle really annoying. Would hamper fast unzipping so I cut mine off. I replaced it with a large carabiner which works much better. I see you removed the elastic silly string from the top pouch, I did the same. The main compartment takes a Mac Book Air.. just
Компрессионная стропа снижает давление на молнию. Я тоже хочу снять, но боюсь что молнию порвёт. Пусть она Ykk, но я не знаю какую нагрузку "на разрыв" она выдерживает.
Awesome video keep up the good work !!!!
Would love to, but too many work commitments ATM....
The designs of the Moab 8 and 10 are so close to being substitutes for the discontinued Maxpedition Gila and Pecos, its really frustrating for me. If only they made models with all the compartments being empty and lined with velcro. I'd pay extra for that and for them to redesign the zipper cover to be able to be secured away from the zipper path with maybe velcro or bungee cord. And last remove the media pouch on the Moab 10 sling. Thanks for the detailed review, I had spent a good time looking at the Moab 8 in person and was curious about the 10 and your video was really insightful, especially the molle sticks bit. I will be getting a few of those for myself.
I agree with all of that. If you want Velcro lined, go Vanquest or Vertx. A bit more money. But worth it.
Could you give me a measure of its width? Its 22cm listed but i dont know if that's the top or the narrower tapered bottom
I’ve ordered 2 of these fatty organizer pouches and also one micro sized pouch. I have many Swiss Army knives and other things am needing these organizers for! 🙂
They will serve you well....
I wish they would update this backpack. It needs a water bottle holder built in and if they cut the weight by 15% it would be the perfect travel day pack.
Bottle holder conflicts with the design a little. It is supposed to be an option to carry the Katara as a sling pack, where you would need side access to either side of the pack while on the body. A sewed in water bottle holder would be in the way. But at the price point I feel they could include a MOLLE bottle holder that you could attach on whatever side is down when used as a sling.....
You can buy a water holder from them it's under accessories. Not everyone wants a bottle holder so they made it where you can add one or go without.
I really like the 9l version . I will order the backpack this week , i will use it for fishing . Do you think it can hold 5-6 kg ? will buy for long term usage
5-6kg should be easy. They are well stitched and as far as material durability goes it does not get much better imho....
Can the sling come off or be tucked in?
No, the sling can't be tucked away....
the hanger loop is for a hydration bladder.
Thx.
After at least 2 yrs of using it as backpack i recently just converted to a sling!! Just see how its goes!😊
👍, it might. If you have a chance to try a Maxpedition or vertx sling pack take it. As I am using slings 80% of the time, the Katara would turn me off slings if it was my only choice.
Great, intelligent review!! Kudos...
Cheers Buddy! Appreciated!
Keep it up sir
Thank you, I will
I love Vanquest, I am a Chilean youtuber and I make a lot of review of Vanquest. One of my top 10 brand in the EDC world. Great layout
I agree, love to hear what the other 9 are?
👍🏽
Thx
Yeah my favorite bag!
Thx!
Thanks for the review, what brand are the 2 'carabiners' (?) attached to the front of the bag?
Those are really cheap "viper" MOLLE hooks. If you Google viper backpacks.
