Welcome aboard Hoppy Trails! We are a family of 3 (and a dog) exploring the country by water in our Ranger Tug R31CB.
A Ranger Tug on Lake Superior - Ep.3: Isle Royale
Our Lake Superior adventure continues aboard our mighty Ranger Tug R31CB with a trip to Isle Royale! We spend five days on the Big Island, circumnavigating its 45 mile length.
Isle Royale is one of the least visited National Parks in the USA, famous for its moose and wolves as well as its backcountry camping. We'll be traveling in a bit more comfort than those who come by seaplane or ferry to hike the 165 miles of trails on the island, but we still find some opportunities to get our boots dirty!
We lucked out with good weather and calm seas during our five days in the park. Highlights include our stays in Windigo, Chippewa Harbor, Rock Harbor, and McCargo Cove. We loved our time in Isle Royale and can't wait to go back to explore some more!

Why are you stopping at weight stations? If it's personal?
I pull over depending on what the sign says - sometimes they say “all vehicles over xxx lbs” or it’s a digital sign that specifically directs me to exit for the station. I figure it’s better to stop when unnecessary vs the other way around!
Vid on purchasing your boat?
Windigo is now renamed. Good luck pronouncing it. Ozaagaateng. I think I spotted Captain Matt on The Voyageur 2 in Rock Harbor.
No kidding! Well, I guess that’s what happens when you take 2 years to make a video… 😝 I guess we’ll have to go back!
So glad you're back with video. Great content keep it up,
Looking forward to the Apostle Islands
Great videos. What nav chart app do you use?
Thanks! I primarily use Navionics - it shows more detail in the depth contours. Aquamaps is a great product too, I like it for route planning.
@@Hop_Tug thank you very much.
I really enjoyed that tour of the Island. Well done and thanks for sharing. I hope you stop by Washburn Marina and get out in the islands again this year. Maybe I'll see you again. I'm looking forward to EP 4. Take care.
Thank you! I’m afraid this summer will find us elsewhere, but we do look forward to returning! Maybe next time we’ll stay the whole summer 👍🏻
Another great vid, I've been following your Instagram pics and hoping you made more videos of these stunning areas
I towed a camano troll from Jacksonville Florida to Vancouver bc with my old dodge welding truck. What an adventure.
That’s a long haul!
Bad boaters everywhere. Anywhere near shore kids should have vests. Only takes one runaway boar. Coming from a commercial fisherman. Great memories cheers
That's some lake.
When I had my Ranger Tug I would usually break my trip to Isle Royale into a two day trip. GM to Horseshoe Bay day one then onto The Island day 2. Good times.
How long would you normally spend in Isle Royale?
@@Hop_Tug I have a friend with one of the remaining cabins on the island. :)
Beautiful family on a beautiful boat in a beautiful lake. Thanks, loved it.
Ok what happened Where’d you go?
Thanks for checking in! Been busy and videos got put on the back burner. Episode 3 is up now!
Thanks for visiting my town. GM MN. I had a Ranger Tug 21-EC that I kept in our marina for 7 years.
Thanks for watching! We love GM in all seasons and have been going for years. Never spotted your RT there though! Seems like the perfect boat for some weekend coastal cruising
@@Hop_Tug I sold it in 2022. It was moored right in front of the fish cleaning house. D dock.
Man, that looks very relaxing even with the tasks at hand. Nice escape from the norm.
Lake Superior would be about the last place I would cruise. That sucker never warms up.
You make a fair point, but the water is incredibly clear and there’s seclusion in abundance, if that’s your thing!
Thank you from Ireland , nice video , towable boating doesnt really exist here , country is small. However it looks great in US . And the nae sayers / critics need to get a life . Good job .
Oh wow, thanks! I’d love to see Ireland someday. There is actually a Ranger Tug almost identical to ours that was shipped to Europe last summer - I believe he either did cross from the UK to Ireland, or is planning to, so keep an eye out! The boat is called “Sweet Love”
That 3 mast was beautiful i can see why you used it as the thumbnail.
no new videos? still got it?
More coming! Just been busy. Thanks for waiting!
Well, I know you also made it to Paducah. That is how I learned about Hoppy Trails Tug. Some beer runner left a sticker on a city dock fuel pump. *<(:-) Found while tuned in with "Back Waters and Back Roads."
Darned kids and their graffiti! 😋 Thanks for posting! There’s maybe 2 or 3 of those stickers out there, so it’s fun to know that someone took notice! We’re presently traveling the Great Loop and there will be more videos coming in the future, so I hope you’ll stop by again!
Do you know the GVWR on your trailer? We have restrictions in Florida that other states don’t have. If the sum of the truck and trailer GVWR is over 26k, you have to have a CDL.
Looking forward to more of the tour!
Nothing beats the Trent/Severn waterway system in Ontario, Canada for a great boating vacation. Travel from Lake Ontario all the way to Georgian Bay passing through many lakes, rivers and locks. I've done it. An amazing trip.
Beautiful filming and editing.
Looking forward to your next edition!!!! You’re doing what I hope to do in the future.
awesome boat. i had a look at these. but I just didnt feel good spending that much with out keeping it in a heated garage during the winter. And my garage isnt exactly tall enough.
Only 180 gallons for a 30ft massive heavy boat? What’s the range fucking 90 miles? Who the hell would put such a small tank in a big boat like that. My 27 Cape Horn CC has a 180 gallon tank for Christ sake
I do hope we will be getting a full boat tour at some point!
Are you in Milwaukee now?…saw a red ranger in McKinley Marina.
Really 603 feet depth? Most wouldn’t even think that is possible on a lake.
Max depth is 1332 feet. Think of it as an inland sea rather than a lake.
12 gallons of fuel per hour? My truck only get 10 per mile.
Please tell us depths and stuff like that.
How heavy is the load? We want. To know but you just flash your phone for 1/2 a second.
Nice video and editing. Looked like a great trip!
Those are great seaworthy boats. See many up here in Alaska.
Yea except for their small ass fuel tanks
Good❤❤❤❤❤
Environment you me him, green by everyone
Where’s episode 3 ?
Thanks for making this video! Loved how wholesome and authentic it was
So you put on the oversized banner. So admitted you new you are to wide . I hope you looked into each state you go to. Because depending on the width you needed a becon on the front and back . Some states like n.y and mass are stickler.
Hi, thanks for watching and for your concern. I’d hoped the video would convey the efforts I went through to ensure we were operating legally. I can assure you that we had permits for each state and they were adhered to fully if not more conservatively. Beacons are not required for a load this size in MN or WI. As I read it, the oversize banner isn’t even required in MN for this size load.
Oboy!! I live down in Alabama, and not a boater, but from all the videos I've seen, tugs would be my vessel of choice. Subbed and looking forward to your adventures! Any Great Loop dreams/plans??
Thanks for checking out our vids! Believe it or not, we’re looping right now! Videos are in the works, but they are a lot of work and it will probably be a couple months before I can get one out.
@@Hop_Tug Ah! No rush, take your time; the first priority is to enjoy the trip. 😎
Nice job on your first video! I agree with the other folks about the music being a bit loud, but you'll find your footing on that. I'm curious about why you fueled up with road diesel as opposed to something without the road taxes? Maybe it was still cheaper than buying at the marina?
Thanks for giving it a look! It’s been my experience that road diesel is still cheaper than a marina markup. We’ve occasionally found some very cheap diesel (stay tuned for the Isle Royale episode) but it’s rare. I guess I could go to a truck stop and get refer diesel for less?
Seriously!? No life jacket for the free roaming young (maybe 2 yrs) daughter? It's not like there is a crew onboard and the wife apparently from the launch is clueless. WOW, totally irresponsible.
Easy there Judge Judy.
The music junked another video 👎👎👎👎👎💩💩💩😬
There is more to see. Will you make it back on the big lake? Hope so. Take care.
Nice video. I realized watching that I saw you at Washburn. I was on the dock when you came over to fill your water due to the dock you were on did not have water at the time. Hope your trip was great. Take care.
Ha! I’m amazed you remember that! Hopefully it wasn’t because my driving was making you nervous. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for posting…looking forward to more posts
Great video
Because I could not hear a single word over the loud music, I quickly lost interest. There are dozens, hundreds of boat videos. What makes them interesting is the connection between the people and the boat. How can I exsperiance that If I cant hear what your saying? Some music is fine, as your sailing into the sunset. But most of us want to hear what you say.
Thanks for your constructive criticism. These are mainly for my own purpose as a log of our experiences to remember at a later date - I just make them public in case anyone else happens to be interested! In any case, I invite you give our future videos another chance, as this one was my first!
