    I feel Janet's frustration in my spirit. I graduated high school and university, yet I had to move out of home and to somewhere far away from family and friends for a job and it feels like a punishment. My older sister didn't do any of that and still got to live at home. I envy her because if I knew that was a choice, I wouldn't have done all I did. I know it's not her fault, but it feels unfair, so when Janet loses it, it feels cathartic.

    What I think impacted me most about this film is that you never feel "safe." Even in surprisingly silly and relaxing moments, you never know what is going to trigger someone into a melt-down or shouting match. Sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't, but you always know it COULD happen. Every time someone gets out, the other girls have a tendency to view her with contempt and/or jealousy, as the exits from the facility are rarely ever framed in a positive way to the others still stuck inside. As Lisa also knows, and the doctor says to Susanna in one scene, nobody ever gets "better." (As we later learn was absolutely the truth of Daisy's situation, of which the doctors were either completely ignorant of, or just didn't care enough or didn't have the authority to stop.)

      From what I remember from the book, Janet would state different weights as ideals to attain. The movie doesn't have the time to explain all the details that the book does. It does convey Janet's frustration with her hospitalization, she hasn't managed to figure out what she needs to do in order to released.

    • @courtneyshannon2621
      @courtneyshannon2621 Před 2 lety

      Yeah, this is what the 90s were like. Most of the top actresses were extremely thin - they pretty much had to be. A size six woman on screen was considered "fat." For example, there were a zillion jokes about Kate Winslet "get fat" while filming Titanic. Movies and TV shows would do storylines where a character had anorexia, to be relevant, but usually the actress playing that character had about the same body frame as the main characters. So the unintentional message was for women and girls that it was good to be skinny, but you had to either be naturally skinny, or hide what you did to be that way. Things are not perfect now, but it's a lot better than 25 years ago.

    • @jamieclayton9353

      A character called Janet. In the book, it explains that (because she is anorexic), she is frequently force-fed when she dips under the weight of 75 pounds. She is also not allowed to leave the hospital unlike Daisy (the girl entering the car) who usually only checks in around Christmas time but in this instance is allowed to go home. Because of this, Janet envies her as she wants to leave hence her statement: “that is not fair, 74 is the perfect weight.”

    • @RabbitTeaPot
      @RabbitTeaPot Před 4 lety

      Daisy also has an eating disorder which is part of several layers of issues as to why she’s in the hospital. It’s inferred that Daisy is being abused by her father (sleeping with one another) and because of that part of the MANY issues she’s dealing with is only eating the chicken he brings from his store. In the books it seems she’s only in the hospital because her mother might suspect what’s been going on so it’s “better/easier” to send Daisy away than deal with the fact her husbands an abuser.

    • @RabbitTeaPot
      @RabbitTeaPot Před 4 lety

      Which is also why she only goes home for the holidays because “you have to keep up appearances” to the family & friends round that time of year. 100% they’d have said she was away at school or what ever between that time.

      jasmine joonie I lost my period for over a year and was still convinced I was huge. The first time a boy asked me out I ran away because I was SURE he was asking out ‘the fat girl’ as a joke. Being the fat girl was my identity. I knew it so deeply that little things like my friends and family TELLING me I wasn’t fat, losing my period, getting sent to therapy didn’t matter or “wake me up”; my mind just did mental gymnastics to dismiss it or make it a good thing. At one point I even considered getting periods a sign of BEING TOO FAT and if i spotted any blood I’d starve myself for days as punishment for getting so fat as to actually be able to grow a whole other person from my excess calories. I even convinced myself that any data telling me to gain weight (like my BMI) was some kind of PC conspiracy designed to coddle fat girls. The break from reality than an eating disorder can cause is no joke

      @@SharonVeeLee I’m on antidepressants, I now menstruate monthly, but I still live in a weird zone where I don’t know what I look like. It’s like every mirror is a funhouse mirror. One minute I’m thin, the next I’m fat. I don’t own a set of scales. I try to measure my health in terms of what I can DO (can I run long distance? Can I menstruate? Can I do a pull/push up?) I’ve come to accept that my body at its most capable wont look like a magazine because magazine images don’t show women at their most capable, and in fact are photoshopped versions besides. I wish, from the bottom of my heart, that girls of the future prioritise their health over their appearance. I try to live my life in accordance with health, not image. I try to prioritise me, not the image I want people to see. I’ve changed physically. I’m actually kind of buff in the arms and shoulders because I live alone on an island and I swim and fish and hunt and farm a lot. (Covid and bushfires really fucked our island and ive had to step up; in a weird way it’s beeen good for me) But still; Recovery is hard and annoying when people carelessly make comments about how I look man-ish. Usually older women who married young, as is done on this island (I went to boarding school on the mainland, which is where my eating disorder spiked) In short. I’m doing okay. Not throwing up my food, but I AM still dealing with the consequences of having done that (for real. Acid reflux SUCKS and bulimia makes that shit a thing. Years after you stop, the sphincter between your stomach and your throat will be for shit and you won’t be able to sleep laying down, just DONT DO IT) I don’t date because. I don’t even know what I look like. (Except apparently I have big arms and shoulders) and I worry that I won’t be able to accept someone who sees me as beautiful if I can’t see it myself. But for now; being healthy enough to hunt and farm is okay. I don’t dwell on the mirror. I take my meds. I try to listen to my body. Perhaps one day I’ll be able to see it, and perhaps one day I’ll be able to accept the version that someone sees. If you struggle with your image or weight please please please talk to someone. Your health is the most precious thing. More precious than the eyes that fall on you. More precious than the standards you’ve set yourself. Please look after yourselves xxx
