The versatility to go from AAL to Victoria and be fully robust in both respects, the depth of pocket, the painstakingly thorough vocabulary, the precision, power, fluidity, dynamics, control, style, phrasing and feel, not to mention the brains and patience to transcribe even one of the beautifully composed songs that encompass all of these things? I mean the answer is obvious... it's Lars Ulrich.

Im self taught. Couldnt read music through high school, just memorized everything. Marching, concert and Jazz. Been playing since i was 13 (Im 43). I just finally started getting really serious learning drums about 2 years ago for personal goals starting from technique and back to the basics. These videos and the message it sends are great. Thanks.

The distinction needs to be made between THE best and YOUR best. Perhaps we can get broad consensus about a handful of players who seem to excel in everything. These players are chameleons with the vocabulary to play many styles and are in the running to be called THE best. But most people have a favourite genre. A player could be fairly one dimensional and operate solely within a genre but still be YOUR best because of your love for that particular style. Furthermore, there are players with clear imperfections in their playing but are liked by fans for those very ‘imperfections’.

Your a beast, no doubt! I love how you didn't do anything really difficult technique wise here but created soooo much tension...Well done!! I will say tho that you cheated! Your a cheater! I know you had a click in your ears!! Liar liar pants on fire!! You fooled almost everyone except guys who do the same thing!! Have fun Matt but don't have too much fun, remember its the live group playing with no guide rails that will take you places that separate you from all the other super talented drummers. Matt, I think you have the raw talent and the youth to be really great but you know your growth will always hit that wall if you just keep shedding in your drum room with the click and the sequencer. You gotta get out and play with 100 great musicians every month. I know you got to work and earn but you can combine the two. Shedding to a click will impress 99% of the young guys out there who are impressed with the hands and the feet and the linier moves but its with the band, no click and no saftey net that will develop that third eye. You know what I mean? I'm sure you know the feeling when you can "see the future" in the moment? Thats where the greats shine and where you learn time that you cant get from time on the seat... You gotta get out there man

Dave Weckl truly shines when playing with a stripped-down drum kit for other bands or artists, rather than with his own group. Although in recent years he may have stopped innovating and started repeating himself, he still performs at an exceptionally high level. For many years, he was my favorite drummer. I find Matt's analysis remarkable as it pinpoints areas for improvement, which I wholeheartedly agree with. The concept of a 'total drummer' is truly profound.

The reason why it’s Vinnie, is because 1. his musicality is better then anybody. He’s gotten calls for every session humanly possible. Not talking about bullshit clinics, but actually making musical drum parts for songs. 2. He’s the best sight reader in history. You can’t be on the list, if you can’t take any advanced reading gig. Whether that’s big band, theatre work, or charts at a session. 3. He’s not the fastest anymore, but his rhythmic deepness is on a different planet. The way he stretched out with chick corea and frank zappa was wayyyy out. Vinnie has forgotten more shit then most drummers will ever learn.

My no 1 on those would be compose/improvise. Because I think that is what we, as an audience, really remember or recognize over time. Like if the part makes you think "how the hell could he have come up with that" then it's good shit. Because chops can be repeated, but how you piece it just makes it unique.

“Posing this question is akin to inquiring, ‘Who is the most beautiful woman in the world?’ The answer, inevitably, is subjective, hinging on individual perception.” "If someone had posed this question to me in my teenage years, I would have undoubtedly responded with ‘Neil Peart’. In my mind, he was an untouchable figure in the drumming community. However, fast forward 30 years, and my perspective has broadened. Now, I would mention drummers like Steve Gadd, Kenny Aronoff, Dennis Chambers, and others. These musicians understand how to play MUSIC. They are not merely performing on stage for visibility, but rather contributing to a much larger and more significant endeavor. I feel that today’s musicians, not just drummers, often strive too hard to be recognized as the best. This pursuit sometimes overshadows the essence of simply having fun and creating music."

That was such a nice topic, and I agree it’s important to think about. And I’m torn, sometimes I value the odd time, double bass, multi genre octopus. And then I hear Elvin Jones play a ride cymbal and feather the bass drum. and my head is bobbing. I think I’m kind of more into Elvin, at least on more days than I’m into the octopus.

I feel as though the best drummer on earth by these standards won’t necessarily be the absolute best at any one pillar. It would be a person who I guess has passed a certain threshold in every aspect. But the most inspiring people will always be the specialists in my opinion. Therefore, I’m not sure the world’s best in this hypothetical matters to such a high degree.

I can't look past Lang and Donati for this title, and I can't split the two of them. They hit all the criteria you mentioned. Any Frankenstein's monster on drums simply has to take Lang's fundamentals - I'm almost beyond hearing any arguments on that topic.
