The ending cracked me up. I needed that. Thank you.
curious if you ever offer a print to the people in your photos. the one of travis looking off into the distances is pretty amazing.
I usually do. Sometimes people don’t reply. Honestly, with Travis, I’ve been hesitant to reach out because I love the photo so much and I have this idea of who he is now in my head. It’s strange. It’s my favorite portrait I’ve taken and it’s on my wall. I’ll reach out to him at some point I’m sure but I need the image to settle in my mind. If that makes any sense. Edit: actually this comment made me text him. I’m meeting him today to give him a print and do a short interview.
@@BryanBirks that totally makes sense to me. one aspect of portraiture photography that really appeals to me, is ability to capture so much emotion without a single word being spoken. thanks for replying and for the edit of you contacting travis, it helped my little fragile ego. and i'm really curious which image travis would pick. looking forward to the interview, if it's something you're planning to share. and keep sharing your work. really enjoy the way you present what you've captured.
The feeling of being able to ingest critical feedback in a positive way is one of the best feelings, especially from someone you respect. I'm really enjoying the process of seeing your assignment work too. One of the best channels with honest and critical insights into photography that sets you and your work apart from most. Love from England.
Thanks, Joe. Just browsed your channel. Looking forward to diving in more!
These are amazing man! Appreciate the vulnerability about how you used to be and how you’ve grown past shit talking. I need to prepare way more 😅
Ha I think I over prepared but it worked out!
what lens was used for these shots?
Xenotar 135mm
Legit laughed out loud when you showed that ikea desk. That damn desk about sent me to physical therapy 😂
if I shot at 12:am,the light is very sharp and very deep contrast, this should be shot with pull precessing?
Amazing images! My sincere respect for the awesome artistry of the images.
Thank you for your video! I loved hearing about your experience at Chico. I'm thinking about applying for Chico. Do you mind talking about your application process? Any advice for someone like me, who (like you) has never been to a review and is keen to learn more about myself, my photography, and photography!
Applying is pretty straightforward! Just submit your ongoing project and then wait and see. I would recommend having a pretty tight and cohesive project going in. I would also recommend that you go into with the idea of being extremely social and working on making connections. If you think that isn’t the place for you and the money is a big con then I would look at other reviews. I would venture to guess some people that weren’t as social when I went may say that it’s not worth the investment. But if you have the money, a good cohesive project, and are looking to make friends in a community then I say go for it. You will undoubtedly learn things about your photography and more importantly yourself. I don’t think that’s even a question.
So I just realized I did not have the notifications bell selected when I followed because I am now watching this 2 weeks later. Really enjoy your vids partially because I am from IL now living in TN, So when you are out driving around it looks very familiar to me. Also I am a Leica shooter- so I maybe a little bit offended... JK. 😂 Really though for me the focus of the rangefinder allows me to get some of the sharpest images vs my Pentax K1000 SLR so that is the reason I shoot with Leica now, I can produce the same images but for me the Leica makes the process way easier.
AI is not the same as computing. Autofocus is not AI.
Okay!
Those words from Rashod Taylor are so damn heartbreaking.
Love the lines at the end, man.
Thanks for watching, sir!
Love your channel Bryan. You have a great attitude and this one especially made me laugh. Keep it up!
Thank you!
Love the photos, but honestly got tired of listening to him and watching him light cigarettes though. I had to play vid at 1.75 speed and mute. Blah, blah, I'm way more creative than everyone else so I take superior photos blah blah.
I would have just turned it off at that point. No need to torture yourself.
sorry for fucking up your 666 likes by adding one more!
Haha the Devil is mad but not me.
thanks Bryan ! I am glad i saw this so i can stay up to date with your videos !
You’re welcome, sir. Keep making beautiful work!
Wpw/ What a treasure trove of information. Thanks!
What an awesome dude. He made me smile for the whole video !
At this point I'm not sure if I'm here for the photography or the tool Easter eggs in each video lately! 🤙🏼😎Keep rockin mate!
I would want nothing more than that.
Great honest post. I can't wait to see what the next 12 months bring for you while you're not being a prick😅
I stopped looking at new cameras after the original Fuji X100.
I always took photos, but I didn't realize how much I liked it till recently, I'm 48. My step mom passed and while going through her stuff we found an old praktica film camera. And it clicked in my head. I bought a few film cameras, and now I've decided to keep only one mount system on analog photo. Recently, I bought my first digital camera. Took a used Nikon d750, and bought a Tamron 70-200mm lens. So far I do everything with it. Got a few paid contracts. I freaking love it. Anyway this to say that I was a gear slutt in music for years, and seem like I'm not like this in photography. I take my time, and try to improve always
Yet again awe inspiring, I just took my Fuji GA 645W to England but ran out of film and it’s Sunday no shops are open today so I’m watching videos about photography after watching this I can’t keep still I’ve got inspiration running through my veins. Northern Spain in the house.
Glad I could be of service!
Which focal length do you use most on your digital? Loved the look this time so much
35mm!
Rivers Dream may just be the best photobook I've ever purchased!
It’s a beauty. Inside and out.
Bryan hi, what camera do u use for filming your vlog? Thanks
Lumix S1!
In my opinion the advice you received has improved your photography I love it before but that body of work you just shot was excellent and yet again I’m feeling inspired. I’m on a similar journey myself shooting film again after many years 5x4, 120 and digital. Lots of respect from Northern Spain
Another video from Bryan? Oh my...
Almost as rare as a solar eclipse.
Love it, subscribed at 1:46. ❤
Thank you!
What camera Brian use ? Fuji or Mamiya ?
I believe he uses a GFX but I could be wrong.
Ai isn’t auto focus or content fill aware, I understand what you mean but there is a difference. Especially in generative ai and algorithmic I think ai isn’t disappearing, I think the same thing is going to happen when photography came around and painters were losing their minds. Realism as a style and painting portraits were instantly taken over by photography basically, but painters adapted and went into a new era and photography also found its place.
I just know I’m not going to be hunched over a keyboard typing to make a photo. I’ll go into a different profession if it comes to that.
Great content Bryan, really good!!!!!! Keep em' comin'!!
Thanks! Will do!
I sort of despise autofocus, I won't touch any of the film cameras with it, the ones I use are all manual focus only, and the lenses for those were all designed before 1982. I own a mirrorless camera, but since I had no intension of using that aspect of it I only looked at other aspects, leading to my one and only association with Leica, the L mount on Panasonic cameras. I like the S5 for digitising my negatives and recording video. I cannot for the life of me understand why people are ditching what is to me a perfectly good system for a 'pretty much the same, but we added a few tiny differences to impress you' camera. Will it alter or improve their images? Not in the slightest, and next year they'll be suckered into buying a new one. I just bought a new camera, a 6x17 field, or salon camera made of walnut and steel. I don't expect it to improve my photography, I expect it to provide more options and take a long time to master. I don't intend to replace it *ever*.
I’ve never used a film camera with autofocus aside from a point and shoot. It scares me to trust an old system like that! Lmao
autofocus utilizes AI?
For certain modes like faces and animals.
I’ve been watching a lot of the stuff you put out and seeing what you’ve accomplished speaks volumes compared to all the gear heads who claim to be professionals and truly haven’t done shit. I truly appreciate the fact that your work is inspiring and unique and I also appreciate the effort and passion you have put into your work. A lot of these gear heads don’t put in the work you do which makes what you do more valuable. And I think that’s where it counts. You’re awesome bro. Keep up the good work.
The only thing the salespeople of CZcams accomplish is making money. Not a bad thing but they just need to be more transparent with their business.
Bryan, As always...a terrific video. Your last point fits everyone.
Thank you, Gary!
I’ve said it before I’ll say it again…you are a visual poet my friend. You deeply move me with your story telling ability.
Happy to hear that. Thank you!
What are you shooting for digital work Brian? Excellent images of the watchmaker.
Thank you! I use a Lumix S1 and a Sigma 35mm. Some stuff was a Sigma 70mm macro.
Is it possible to support you on Patreon?
It is but I have it paused at the moment because I wasn’t posting as much.
Love TOOL 🤘🏾
Heck yeah.
Hi Bryan! please tell me, do you use the tape to secure the film to the led and mask all the light to, i supose the film has to be very flat and griped to the light...thanks!!
I just used tape because it was black and I could mask out the perfect size. I don't tape down the film but slide it in, and it stays pretty flat. If I have trouble, I will use quarters on the four corners to flatten it. I am currently waiting on a 3D printed piece called the "Lobster 4x5 Holder" to hold the film as well as lift it up off the light.
CZcamsrs trying to sell new products aside, there's certainly a point that most photographers reach where they understand their technical limitations and require a specific piece of gear to achieve the look they want to go after, for instance, your xenotar and its maximum aperture
Definitely!
I’m a guitar player also and the GAS over there is probably worse. The CZcams pimps are definitely worse over there 😂.
Oh I can’t imagine.
Re: “Don’t be an A-hole”. I work with graphic designers, it’s a small community and word gets round, especially bad words about bad people. I remember once being told by a designer that if two photographers pitch for the same job, and one of them is a very talented artist but is really hard to deal with, and the other is not quite so talented but fun to be around, the fun guy will always get the job. It was an important lesson. Humble wins the day.
You can always teach someone a skill but not everyone knows how to be a good person.
who cares. everything is a game of higherarchy. there are tons of stories about assholes who are hard to work with climbing to the very top of their respective fields. all advice is idiotic and you should just be yourself every time. it’s all you can be.
@ionluv I’m speaking mostly to people who are trying to break in and the people most likely watching this video are amateurs trying to do that. Few people are good enough to be an ass while getting ahead and those people certainly are not watching CZcams videos.
IV. 😂😂😂
Short and succinct.
Absolutely sufficient analysis
Excellent stuff Brian. I really enjoyed that. The assignment work you showed was superb. Thanks.
great info and truth bombs, subbed!
Thanks for watching!
I see a Bryan Birks video uploaded, I press play
He doesn’t miss!
Great video Bryan. You nailed it
Glad you enjoyed it!
Gotta admit window shopping on youtube is fun tho. I would never buy 90% of the cameras I look at in all those annoying videos 😂
Definitely! But it’s because you’re smart and not an impressionable young person pining for “the thing” that will push them to the next level. That thing ain’t a camera.
