POCKET PISTOLS
This 8-minute video looks at self-defence in the Golden Age of Coach Travel. The main focus is on the astonishingly ingenious pocket pistol. To give context I also talk about the blunderbuss and the nature of wounds from a regular flintlock pistol.
All the images were filmed for inclusion in two films I made for History Hit ( History)
in 2022. ‘Stand and Deliver’ is about Highwaymen and ‘Quicksilver’ is the fascinating story of the origin of the Mail Coach in Britain, featuring a working reconstruction of an original Mail Coach called “Quicksilver’. Both these 40-minute films can be viewed on the History Hit channel by clicking on the links below.
All filming leaves chunks on the cutting room floor. However I was so intrigued by the pocket pistols (casualties of the edit) that History Hit kindly gave me permission to make this little film to showcase them.

A short video introducing my book about dogs and history. It is published in the UK by White Owl Books (an imprint of Pen-and-Sword Books) and is distributed in the US by Casemate IPM. If you care about the future of our dogs, it is not a bad idea to have a broader understanding of their past.
Archery Its History And Forms

I made this video twenty-five years ago, in 1995. Some of it is looking a bit dated now and I have adjusted some of my thoughts about power, range and penetration with regards to the longbow. Current thinking on these issues is much better expressed in my book 'WAR BOWS'. However I thought it was time to make this old film freely available to a new audience. It was filmed on location in the glo...

No one can made same Damascus Steel for sword. Everyone can make replica but not the same with real damascus steel, some is claimed from india, but tehnique to made it from Syira/damscus. The technology has been lost forever. There is reason why the technology should be lost. You can find the same material in this world, wootz from india, commet, etc. but the technology and technique is classified. The master has been died. If people today know the recipe and technique they will producing submarine damascus steel and more evil weapon to be not defeated easly. It is better the technology is lost forever instead of some badass or military make chaos in the world without peace.😂😂 Well done.

Amazing how many people can reproduce it now. There’s a lot of variation in composition though so it’s difficult to call it authentic. The definition is too loose as per knifesteelnerds.

And nothing about the string which was the crucial part of the bow. Military strings were made of the male hemp plant and had severe limitations in that they were only good for about ten arrows before changing. The first arrow was the fastest and it was all downhill after that as speed/kinetic energy decreased. At sea or in a Welsh winter that was down to about six arrows. "Hemp fibers are subject to creep (under mechanical loading) and a ratchetting phenomenon (accumulation of irreversible deformations) under cyclic loading. These phenomena are activated (increased) by the rise in water content (i.e., the increase in the relative humidity of the surrounding air). In addition to these elongations, these mechanical loadings generally induce stiffening in the longitudinal direction of the fibres and a decrease in their damping capacity." No archery replication of medieval archery is accurate without using hemp strings....if you use a dacron string you might as well use a fibreglass arrow. The opening range is now thought to be under 100 yards due the discovery of a letter written by Charles VII after Forminguy 1450 where the new French tactics of four men "lances" defeated the Englsih army. Loosly translated it told us that the English archers liked to shoot at the feet.....well if you are carrying a bloody great shield and wearing an iron hat there is nowhere else to aim.

Old video but good for the times.Archeologically so much more insight into historic archery is now out there now.The recent finds in Norway in the melting ice are amazing 5 1/2 to 6000 year old arrows are emerging from the ice all the time.Otzi the ice man Also Scythian bows found as far east as early chinese borders Found in graves of Euraisian peoples.Aĺso the many forms of Asiatic Archery is not mentioned in any detail.North and south American indian archery is not covered either.I would dearly like for some one to do a documentary on these aspects of Archery.I have been bombarded with the European and British aspect of Archery for far too long. The English long bow has never been the pinical of bows. Some of the Asian bows were far more superior and versitile than English long bows. English war bows did their job very well but compared to other bows they were very primative and never advanced much from the basic self bow technology. It sounds so dissmisive to ignore other countries cultural practices in Archery.Unfortunately this was made through the eyes of a biased westerner.I prefere to appreciate all forms of archery from all cultures. Old school Richie Archer since 1964.

Thanks for your insights. I 100% agree with you. This is, as you noted, an old film - made in its time entirely for a British audience. It makes some reference to other cultures but it did what it intended to do at the time, which was to focus on the domestic tradition. Yes there have been an enormous number of studies and discoveries that have changed our understanding in many ways since this was made. However it mostly holds true. I , like you, am far more interested in Eastern archery. Horse archery - shooting with a thumb ring- has been my passion for many years now. I strarted a horse archery club when I lived in the USA. I have written extensively on the Scythians, including doing a lecture about their archery for The British Museum. I wrote a book for Osprey on The Composite Bow. I also wrote War Bows, which is an enormous book, covering much of the new evidence regarding English longbows, + a large chapter on crossbows + an large chapter on composite bows from Turkey, China and elsewhere + a large chapter exclusively on the Japanese Bow. Although I acknowledge that this video, made for a British audience before the international age of the internet, had a narrow focus, I resent your accusation that I am a biased Westerner. If you read my extensive writing on historical archery you will see that I am a major proponent of the superiority and greater sophistication of Eastern archery. I am currently writing a book about horses in America and this has large sections about Native American archery. I am an old school archer since 1959.

The word that the Arab man referred to as " فولاد جوهری" is not Arabic at all. Arabs pronounce the Persian word "پولاد" as "فولاد" because they do not have the letter "p". They also pronounce the word "گوهر" as "جوهر" because they do not have the letter "g". If you read verhoeven's book yourself, you will see that he mostly talks about India and Iran, not Arabs.

The popularity of archery is astounding and increasing exponentially. Grew up with recurves in 50s, Dad was an archer. Target. All compounds now. Point of pride: The compound was invented (or perfected or commercialized??) by Wilbur Holless Allen in the small town of Billings, just down the road from where I live in the Missouri Ozarks.

Even today, with my simple bow and arrows, I have been able to defy, easily, the claims of many historians. So, I know the scientific community, today, has something about it that is out of touch with reality. Never trust anyone that lays claim to anything that they have never mastered. Namely, scientists.

My uncle, Don Warren, passed away last year. He loved archery and was the Canadian Champion many times in both indoor and outdoor national events and was on the Canadian world championship team at the World Championships in Grenoble and Canberra in the 70s. For some reason, I was thinking about him today and missing him and the two other uncles I lost in less than a year’s time, and thought I’d see just what I could find about the history of the bow and arrow. This is a very interesting and informative documentary, and it’s so well done. Thank you for posting it!

My uncle was a member of the Royal Toxophilite Society & I remember shooting at Dunstable sometime in the first half of the 70's as a kid. I was given a suitable sized bow & I can remember the formality & totally embarrassing myself by forgetting the rules and ambling off downrange causing all sorts of shouts, whistles & a right bollocking from my uncle! I still blush thinking about it! Ok, I was in single digits but as an only child I had no concept of childhood. I still kick myself! At the Royal Tock's too! 😳
