This week I am taking you along on my side quests as an artist. This is what a week in the life of a part time artist can look like. Every week is different! We will also be making a ski themed surreal collage, framing some stickers to complete a gallery wall, paint for an afternoon, and much more!
This week was an exciting time after my journey to visit family in England.

    Just a quick tip on the guillotine cutter especially when cutting thin magazine paper: gently put a bit of pressure toward the board while pressing down to make the cut. Clarification: press to your left and down at the same time. It makes the contact with the blade and metal edge tight so you get a nice clean and straight cut. I hope this makes sense.

    I love the humor and/or subtle messages in your pieces. I like the idea of doing an art residency at home. I think that could be fun and inspiring! Sweet mini-framed stickers. I enjoy mini-collages and find myself doing those often (roughly post card size) because they are less daunting and seem to come together quicker for me. So much stuff left at that abandoned house! So sad that people left so much of their life behind and wonder what the story is... but glad you are giving new life to some interesting finds.

When I started this channel I did my own art residency to plan out what I wanted to do, maybe I can do something like that 😜 I love postcard size too! I agree I can pop out a couple of them in one sitting and I love that! It's an easy way to get out of creative block. It was stuffed!! And apparently this is after multiple garage sales, open to the neighborhood to take what they want, and I'm sure many people like myself. I'm excited to see what the art installation ends up looking like though!

    Those Oxford Compact Dictionaries are quite the collectors item for bibliophiles! My boyfriend is an English professor and absolutely freaked when he relieved some secondhand ones for Christmas last year. They typically come in a box with a magnifying glass so you can actually read the text. Another wonderfully inspiring video - just seeing some of the images you have collected has sparked the urge to create in me :)

My understanding is that they were fairly expensive when he bought them, though. It was one of those things he bought just because he wanted them and my mom thought was a frivolous purchase.

    Sorry to hear about the Residency being cancelled,but I think creating your own one would be a great idea. That first colage was meant to be for sure, as soon as you cut out the woman's hand I could see the finished piece straight away,it would make a great print as well. The abadoned house was a real treasure trove,a rare oppertunity to gather new materials to use in your amazing collages and it looks like a great place to stage an immersive art event/happening/exhibition. The stickers were perfect for the two miniature frames as well for your gallery wall. Hope you are felling better as well,can empathise with the migraine,no fun for sure, but hope you are okay now. This really summed up my work life 3:35. Being an (extreme!) introvert, I was so physically and mentally drained by the end of my shift that I had zero energy, motivation or creativity by the time I got home from the office. To work from home and set your own hours if you can manage it is a MUCH better option especially for introvert artists! One tip I'd add is to make sure you don't assume you'll have plenty of time later to do your art. Even if you are single with no kids, your parents will need more of your time and assistance as they age. (My mother had dementia which demanded an incredible amount of my time and energy.) Put the time in for your art now as much as is feasible.

    Cara was created BY AN ARTIST, who also got her work stolen and just recently won a lawsuit against copyright infringement of her work. There's no doubt about the commitment of Cara's team to build a community for artists. They are doing all that on their own with the help of donations so there's no suspicion about why they are urging artists to go there. It's not an echo chamber, it's not suposed to replace socials medias like instagram or twitter, IT'S A PORTIFOLIO SITE.: It's suposed to replace Artstation and Deviantart that became a cesspool of AI garbage and bots while also having a timeline so non-artists can engage with US. It's a hub to display your work and process and for employers and commissioners to look for you and have the certainty they are not seeing AI imagery while searching.

    Ok, I'm starting to see people saying that Cara isn't the way to go, that it will never take Instagram's place and all that. Here's the thing. People aren't going to Cara thinking they're going to make sales there. People go to Cara cause they're sick and tired of Instagram and social media in general, sick and tired of seeing AI everywhere, sick and tired of the damn algorithms. People go to Cara to see art, to see and talk to other people and relate, for community. (It's me. I'm "people"). For me it feels a lot more like tumblr, if tumblr was just art focused. Cara is a refuge for artist where we encourage each other to keep going in this godforsaken corporate world that sucks your soul. Is it the only option out there? No, of course not. Discord is nice, like you said, but you have the find the right server to be in. I'm in way too many already, most of them muted and I never go there, but I still keep them around for some sentimental reason. Anyway, that wasn't the point, I'm rambling. As for your question about Photoshop, yes I still use it, but not the current version. I've been using Photoshop since 1998. The first version I used was PS 5.0. I use CS6 now. I really don't need anything more recent. I've tried using alternatives, but I'm so used to it that it's frustrating trying to learn something new. But I did manage to make something on Clip Studio Paint the other day, so maybe I can finally leave Photoshop behind at some point. I'd like that, actually.

    This anti-AI trend is really damaging to any artist coming up right now. There is HUGE opportunity in AI. An artist could develop and market an entire style with it to really build something. Or pitch a show. or do whatever. That some artists are getting swept up in caring more about feeling part of the "in crowd" and going along with the social media buzz instead of focusing on career and building a future is so sad. But at least it keeps open that HUGE opportunity for artists that want to do the work.

      how the h3ll to you build a ''career" when the sole purpose of these products is to create subemployment? There's no logic in that argument, people might get into the AI fad for a hot minute and earn some bucks on the back of the community being exploited but it will be short lived. Artists are not trying to be part of a in crowd, we are all part of the same community, same working class. You think AI is a big opportunity because you lack class consciousness and the foresight of seeing 2 steps ahead

    • @Shyeep
      @Shyeep Před 14 dny

      @@PedroRodrigues-fh1ku Art will advance, and larger companies will break apart as artists find it more viable to create their own products leveraging AI. That is a good thing to me. I don't want to work under large corporations dictating what I create... I want to bring my products straight to consumers with as little friction as possible. If your dream is to work under a large corporation putting out Toy Story 5423 for low wages, then ok, yea, this might suck for you.

    • @PedroRodrigues-fh1ku
      @PedroRodrigues-fh1ku Před 13 dny

      @@Shyeep "art will advance" -explain exactly in what aspects gen Ai advances Art. Larger companies will break apart - larger companies detains the resources to build the best models there will ever be. You will be a consumer like everyone else, not a creator. Nothing that you will be able to do with AI will be better or faster than big companies can spill out. Your clients won't need your generated picturesd because they too can generate their own. as the artists in this very video said: "artists don't buy from other artists" it's a generalization but it has some truth in it. You can already create without large corporations dictating it, there's nothing keeping you from doing your own thing and finding your own public. My dream is to however I chose to apply my skills in art I will still detain my work as my own. GenAI companies, bigtechs and studios are doing the exact opposite of it with those products, stealing our work to build "tools" to compete against us in our own industry/market, devaluing what we do , extinguishing job positions and making art teams smaller, so the few artists who gets hired will be placed as "art directors" fiddling with AI, fixing outputs while being paid less and working more. They won't be Art directing anything, the CEOs will be the ones deciding what we consume and what we get for entertainment. New artists are already being crushed by it, less minor jobs or commissions that allowed us to keep working while studying to become professionals. How are people supposed to want to follow this career path when there's no incentive, no valuing of what we do? Think 10 to 15 years from now if there are no regulations, no protection for creators, no incentive and bigtechs are left to run free with this scheme. It's not just comercial art/design/music/acting/writing carreers etc that will be affected by it, it's the whole entertainment industry including THE CONSUMERS. You think it's bad what big companies produce now, that they dictate what we create and that we work low wages... how is it going to be BETTER with a product that is built on EXPLOITATION of the worker??? You can still hope for AI to be a tool that empowers artists, but you are talking about the technology itself, not the img/videos/3d/text generators. The products we have now won't empower us, they are designed to exploit us from the very early stages of development. You can still advocate for AI while opposing the current products we have now that were developed unethically with malicious intent. You can still be pro AI while demanding regulations and criticizing the products we currently have.

    Thanks Leah I so appreciate your video, I also had a negative experience with Etsy, with them blocking my account & I got zero response when I tried to prove my case, I have since learnt that many Artists had the exact same experience I had (basically it appeared to be a Troll submitting complaints). Artists have played an enormous part in building up Social Media/Selling Platforms to what they are today so it's unfortunate some of these Companies actions are not being in the Artists best interest. I must add that your Squarespace Website looks absolutely fantastic.

    It's very encouraging for you to say, "You're an artist making content, not a content creator making art" ... I need to hear that. I feel Instagram can sap my motivation as I cannot share with my audience!

    I am not using photoshop. I use pixelmater pro and procreate. I'm sad about photoshop from when they went subscription based. However I also have a really old version that I could use on my old laptop if I really needed it.

    I've been railing against AI-generated images along with everyone else, but I've since come to the same conclusion - handmade art will (eventually) command higher prices than ever. Pandemic also had a lot to do with over-saturating the art market because Everyone had the time to create things. I have a ton of inventory just waiting to be bought up, but I am patient and still waiting/watching for the right direction to take! I'm hoping most AI "artists" will lose interest in something so easy anyway, or find their own niche. In the meantime, I am un-bothered, and free to devote myself to my art. CZcams seems safest and best for what I want at the moment. I am almost ready to create content, hopefully within the month! You do inspire me to try collage, so I compose them all the time but never glue them, Idk why. I am comfortable with expressive intuitive abstracts in acrylic. That's where I live.

      I agree, and interesting point on the saturation of the pandemic. So happy you'll be posting some content soon! I encourage you to queue up a few videos before starting to give you a head start 😀 interesting you don't glue them, I know a lot of people like this! Some people say it's that they're afraid of permeance, but I think it can just be apart of your methods!

    As a YT Live streamer, with so many of my friends and followers also on IG, I would feel like I was deserting my friends and followers by leaving IG.

      I agree! I have so many "internet friends" I'd lose in any migration. That's why threads was interesting that you could continue to follow everyone who joined. But then you still lose anyone who doesn't follow along.

    Personally, I also see Instagram as a portfolio or a visual diary of my artwork. My posting is sporadic and I get so few likes that it's useless to expect anything from it other than seeing my progress and the various art phases I go through. I have no interest in Cara. Just another platform to eat up your time. And like many artists are saying, it's not attracting an audience of potential buyers. But if you're looking for art inspiration or finding an online art buddy, I guess it serves that purpose.

      I'm glad you think so too ☺️ I totally agree with the process part. It reminds me of when I made certain things too since I don't write the date on the back. Thanks for your feedback.

    Leah, great timing with this video, I left social media,Facebook,Twitter(X),Instargam because of the amount of prejudice and trolling got really out of hand and really impacted my mental health at the time. I heve been on Pintrest for a long time now and have never had any problems on here and my own Blog too. I stopped using Photoshop/Corel because they both became too expensive. I think as long as Adobe/Instragem actually honour the 'op out' to stop artist's work being harvested for A.I I think it's okay. I agree the Discord platform is a great way to build a creative community as is CZcams and it seems having your own website as an artist is becoming a way to go as well. I love that Cara has the Glaze app built into the site,but hw long before Trolls/cyber bulies find a way onto this new platform. For selling my work,I have found Pintrest has worked for me for years. I tried Etsty and Redbuubble but the fees andcharges on both just got too much and maent my art was no longer affordable plus both didn't tolerate pielating or watermarking your art to protect it. I hope Cara becomes a success.but I think I will stick with Pintrest and my Blog. Leah it sounds like you have found platforms that really work for you and your briliant artwork. I wish there was a way that socal media platforms to make trolls/cyber bulllies unable to overtake platforms but think socila media totally free of trolls will never happen sadly. (matt)

    Thank you for your thoughtful feedback, it really resonates with me. I’ve been saying the same as you that hand created art will become more valued. When PSD came on the scene artists and designers were freaking out, but it worked out to encompass both digital and hand creators. In fact, it presented more opportunities for more types of creators. The way you’re focusing on your website is really best anyway b/c you have control of narrative, payments and platform.

    Yes!!! thank you for this video Leah, I value the reminder of asserting 'how social media fits into your ecosystem, not the other way around'. As an artist myself looking to launch a more online presence it's a powerful reminder to show up in an authentic way, and not just follow the crowd, especially when it comes to content creation. Keep shining bright, and have a sparkly day ✨

      @flanzella Před 17 dny

      I'm glad you liked the reminder ☺️ I think often we forget this and have seen many artists focus more heavily on the social media than their actual practice. It's important to remind ourselves why we do it in the first place.
