Fit head honcho at the time, Robbie Morales, was there as well as Darryl Tocco filming. The in store progres...

As someone who’s done both over the last 17 years I feel like this is something I can weigh in on… I think primarily it boils down to 2 reasons. The first is societal. So many mtb riders I know and ride with, like me, used to ride BMX as kids and into their early to mid 20s. We all know there’s a societal pressure to grow up and riding a BMX is still seen as riding a kids bike by society so a lot of people quit BMX and then miss riding so they pick up an mtb and head out into the woods and ride. I still have my bmx and I’m 30 now but that thing hasn’t been ridden since 2021 since I got an mtb. This brings me onto the next thing. When you’re young and riding BMX you’re probably riding with your mates most of the time. As you get older people start to drop out of it for whatever reason. Until you’re one of the last ones left. And you get a lot of weird looks from people when you’re the only adult in a skatepark full of kids. Certainly here in the UK where a lot of skateparks are built next to a playground or a school. When you already have limited time to ride because of adult responsibilities like work, chores, and kids, you don’t want to roll up to the park to get snaked 10,000 times in 15 minutes by a flock of kids on scooters and those weird looks start to kill the vibe even more. But you still want to ride and hit jumps and stuff so an mtb is the next best thing. And it quickly becomes addictive once you can head into the woods and ride to your hearts content with that little bit of free time you have, away from judgy people and with nobody getting in your way. The last point is accessibility. Growing up I always found myself to the trails and dirt jumping side of BMX more. Everyone I rode with rode skateparks mostly and occasionally we’d ride street. But the sessions that stick out in my mind are the rare ones where we were in the woods building mediocre sets of jumps as kids and spending all day riding them. For me personally, my mates didn’t want to put the time and effort into building good jumps like I wanted to. I found out in my late teens that Villij trails were local to me. I scoured google maps based off of the very limited info that someone gave me regarding where the trails might be and spent weeks exploring every bit of woodland around. Eventually I find them and I went there just the once, in the middle of the day during the week when nobody was around and I saw them and so desperately wanted to be part of that. But with the trails scene it’s very much a tight knit community. It has to be as most are illegally built on someone else’s land without permission and more often than not it’s an invite only kind of deal in order to preserve them. You have to know someone who’s a local and they’ll give you the nod if they think you’re all good to go there. I didn’t know anyone in that scene as they never really rode anywhere that we would ride. Why would they when they’ve got that masterpiece lurking in the woods? Looking back I should’ve gone back at the weekend and just asked if I could hang out, if they wanted any help digging or maintaining, even just removing tarps from a line and watering it. And if I did that that and showed that willingness to keep the trails running sweet they’d have probably let me be part of it. But I was a shy kid so I never did go back. They’re still there as far as I know but I don’t know if anyone goes there any more. Maybe I’ll head up one day and have another look around and introduce myself if there’s anyone riding or digging. But back to the accessibility point - with the mtb scene there’s a lot of public trails. A lot of bike parks too these days. They act as hubs for riders to gather and go riding together. And through that you find out about the odd cheeky not-so-legit trail. You can ride into your local woods on a weekend and you’ll usually find someone else riding. There’s nowhere near as much gatekeeping. And with the limited free time adult life offers (and living in a country where it rains a lot) you can ride the mtb more often as it doesn’t matter so much what the weather is like. It doesn’t really put a stop to anything and you can ride all year round. Which a lot of people like. So that’s a big point to make. I’m lucky in that I have both options. If I have free time and it’s dry and the weather is good I can ride the BMX or the mtb depending on what I feel like doing. Most likely it’ll be the mtb as I know I have people to ride with. If it’s wet then I know I have the mtb and I can still get my fix and all I’ll have to do extra is hose the bike down and chuck my muddy clothes in the washing machine when I get back. That said, I’ve started to miss riding the BMX after 3 years off it. Maybe I’ll dig it out of retirement this summer and see if I still have the love for it. Fuck the weird looks from people and what society thinks about it.

I started riding in April 2019 and a few months later I was sitting at the local pub having a beer and watching the AFL Grand Final. I notice the tall guy behind the bar is wearing a Focal Point t-shirt and before you know it I am chatting to this bloke called Pat about BMX. Meeting Pat changed my trajectory in BMX, his openess and encouragment for a beginner hooked me in and 5 years later there is no going back. Pat was coming back from a shoulder reco in late 2019 and using the Brunswick Bowl to pump around and get some strength back, one Sunday afternoon that summer he hits my DM's and says how about we ride the bowl for a bit. Here I am, an absolute novice, being asked for a ride by a guy that has been in videos and rides for Cult. It may not have seemed much to Pat, but for me, this changed my BMX life and hooked me for life. The work Pat did for the scene in Melbourne in the short time I knew him before he left for the states, from Riverslide BMX night and things like the STS jam, was huge. If every scene had a Pat Freyne, there might be 100x more BXMers out there. Thank you Tyson for putting the spotlight on someone that has been so inspirational to myself.
