    No you don't have to transpose if you play music written for the instrument. C clarinet does sound good. Eb is kind of icky.

    I'm intrigued by the sound, but it also feels like the quartet is quite unbalanced in dynamics (and possibly like the tone colours haven't quite come through properly). Very interested to see how differently that passage of music will sound in the end!

    "I have redesigned the bass joint" certainly makes for a less discouraging update than "I need to redesign the bass joint." I can see why you waited. When you change the design of a joint in such a way that you need to print it again, can you sometimes reuse the keys you made for the previous version that aren't affected by the redesign?

    Dude this symphony is why I like so many of these more obscure and strange composers. A lot of them are self-taught and ruthlessly driven by their own internal aspirations. Langgaard and Ives are very much in that realm. The raw creativity and the feeling of pure humanity that the more academically-aligned composers of the early 20th century could never dream of. I still believe the only composer to have ever bridged a gap between insane creativity and insane academic knowledge from this time was Stravinsky, but I still love the more amateurish but amazing music that you can tell has a deeply original voice alongside tons of love and passion poured into it.

    I want to add something to my previous post. When someone is playing the E-flat Contra Alto clarinet in a High School or community band, that person is usually playing tuba parts. It is frustrating for that player whenever a low concert F1 or E1 is required (and that clarinet can only go down to an F-sharp1). This is one of the reasons why Low C needs to be on clarinets larger than the Basset Clarinet in A. If Low C was on the Contra Alto Clarinet, that instrument would be able to play an E-flat1.

  • @patandviv2009
    @patandviv2009 Před 2 měsíci

    I think that it is a BIG mistake for any manufacturer of the larger clarinets (alto, bass, contra alto, and contrabass) to make them only go down to low e-flat. These instruments all need to go down to low c. I experienced this while playing both the bass clarinet and the contra alto clarinet.

    Thanks for this. I knew about that original scoring for the three horns, but never could understand how the sopranino and soprano parts worked together. I have performed the Bolero on soprano, and it was just two saxes that day--another guy on tenor and me on soprano. All the YT videos I've seen so far have the same instrumentation. I'd love to see one where the orchestra has the three--tenor, sopranino and soprano, playing in that order. (Sorta like hoping to see the original scoring of Rhapsody in Blue, which I believe had a full sax section.)

    In my university, the marching band activity is commonly associated with the alumni coming back during the school anniversaries. (Probably because I'm in China and few people play football here =_=) Our wind band rehearse for concert performances all year long, and we have extra rehearsals on weekends when we have upcoming outdoor performances (like opening ceremonies, new year ceremonies, anniversary marching band, etc.) At most outdoor occasions we just stand there and do stationary performances. When we really get to march, we only do traditional marching because we don't have time to practice the corps-style marching techniques. We play a few classic marches when marching, stop at important spots, and play a variety of music standing. I personally arranged some pieces for our band, and I hope to write a brand-new one next year. Corps-style marching are rarely seen here in China. The Army Band did some corps-style marching during the early 2010s (they probably abandoned it in favor of concert and traditional marching performances), and corps are sometimes seen in the best middle & high schools in Beijing. Most wind bands here only do concert music (which might be a good thing).

    With only 3000 BBb paperclips made, it was an ordeal to track one down. Pricey to purchase. Months to get overhauled and replated. The total price tag is not cheap, but certainly more within reach than an Eppelsheim. It requires finding skilled, experienced people and a whole lot of patience.

    I appreciate this discussion and although I use contralto (I don’t even separate the two words as I now see many saying “contralto”), I wouldn’t be opposed to great bass. The one thing I would say is that each family has unique designations to their instrument members whether linguistically accurate or not. For example, the “bass” recorder you used is hypothetically a “basset” recorder in many circles. There are regional and/or time period based variations on terminology as well. It’s possible that you are paving the way for an eventual change to great bass clarinet rather than contra alto (contralto)! I love how much information you provided in this video. I learned a lot!
