Silent Night (Cheyenne)

The words for this Christmas song were composed in Cheyenne in 1909 by Rev. Rodolphe Petter, a Mennonite missionary to the Cheyennes, who came to America from Switzerland. Petter's first language was French but he was also fluent in German. The Cheyenne is sung to the familiar tune from Gruber, known in English as Silent Night.

Interesting. Did you know that in many of the Turkic languages balik is fish? In contemporary Russian actually fish is riba
I love the design and colors of the Cheyenne Nation’s flag. 🫡

Orion the Cat again. yet another divine sign. synchro keep in mind there are some wanting limited nuclear war exchange. few cities on both sides of the war...to scare and shock the global populace for future agendas. but also keep in mind it could very well "cascade" out of control for even the globalist control freaks, turning it all to hell on earth. think about the future. what future do you want for next generations.
Thanks for posting this is cool

Fascinating. As an American I think it’s a shame how we treated our linguistic minorities in the previous century, I’m surprised this living-fossil dialect of early-modern Russian had even survived decades of Juneau actively trying to kill it AND the Cold War (but the latter, along with the Ukraine war and the vile brand of russian ultra-nationalism it’s inspired preventing any young Alaskans’ interest in anything involving the country that now wants their home state from us, might be why it’s now committed to dying), just long enough for the internet to archive the last vestiges of it since it’s almost gone. (There’s a site containing archives of its sounds)
@@afdkj “Hatred of Jews and Muslims”? Bruh ever heard of Crimean Tatars (who want Ukraine to retake Crimea and often serve in the country’s army)? And the fact that Ukraine’s president is the only Jewish world leader besides Israel’s Bibi? Its track record on both is hardly perfect, but in Russia the situation right now is objectively worse. And besides, how much do you actually know about Alaska or its internal politics? It’s not nearly as conservative as you think. Their house representative is a female indigenous Democrat, they’re the only US state with ranked-choice voting (so therefore their elections are our most democratic) and polls show that about 70% of Alaskans are glad gay marriage is legal in America (heck they even passed a state law legalizing it a year before it was recognized in all 50 states). And who said anything about “Banderites”? What does that even mean?
When I first heard of this from Wikipedia’s “Demographics of Alaska” article, I wasn’t expecting it to be so far removed from modern Russian. It’s very fascinating to see how much the sound of a language can change over 160 years, and I was happy to find out that someone had indeed managed to record this “living fossil” dialect before it’s gone, so that people know it was there at some point and what it was like. I was surprised it even survived this long, given how my country America treated its linguistic minorities in the previous century (especially those with indigenous ancestry like this village’s inhabitants). The increasingly common irredentist spam from russian nationalists about Alaska since last February can f**k right off (we’ve owned it longer than they had at this point), but it always makes me sad to see local languages/dialects die out like this.
❤

I laughed at “Nuzhnik” toi - that was unexpected)) We know and even use (rarely and a little jokingly) the word nuzhik is specific, it’s very informal word and it’s not the same as toilet: Nuzhnik is just like in your picture, some wood of toilet (at dacha, often)), for example.
Sorry for my mistakes

I'm kind of late to this party, Wayne, but I have to say I love this video. Here in central Texas there is a dialect of German which is almost gone but some of the old folks are trying to teach to the youngsters. In the case of this language it was WW1 that slowed it down a lot and WW2 that has almost killed it. The elders at the time thought that to show they were patriotic Americans they should stop speaking German, at least as an everyday tongue. Thanks for a very interesting piece of history!
Eneoestse!

Wayne, thank you so much for making this video telling us about Ninilchik Russian. I will definitely visit it soon! I am from St Petersburg (RU) and don't know word "Nuzhnik", but my friend who grew up in a village nearby says it is actually still used there (mostly by older people). Wow
👍
So anyone who does know Ninilchik Russian would know a language very very few people know.... that would be cool for any polyglot.
Very interesting, I think that's a murray cod at the end though 🤣
I'll try to change that picture. This picture is closer to the cod that we catch in Ninilchik: images.app.goo.gl/VDC1GzFrpgVNc4X38
Thank you for sharing this. I don't speak russian my self but i have a huge interrest in lingustics. 🙂👍 When it comes to history, its kind of sad, their own motherland just sold them away. Abandoned them.
In Seattle, my Dad knew a Russian speaker from the Kodiak area. During WW2, this man was a POW in Germany. He said that he had no problem speaking with Russian and Czech POWs.
LOL nushki sounds like polish ''nóżki'' which is little legs
Thank you.
Learning to sing this song in my morning daily starts. thank you ! All involved
