The Probation Board for Northern Ireland is a Non-Departmental Public body (NDPB) that came into being in 1982.

Probation is a key part of the criminal justice system working with police, prisons, courts, communities & victims of crime. At any given time Probation supervise 4,300 offenders & provide 761 reports per month to the Courts and Parole Commissioners. Probation also provides behavioural change programmes and a victim information scheme.

Every year, Probation delivers 145,000 hours of Community Service, unpaid work to communities enabling offenders to make some reparation for their crimes. Probation's unique role within criminal justice is to risk assess & manage offenders & address their negative
behaviours. Every probation officer is social work trained which enables them to effectively tackle the causes of crime & prevent others becoming victims.
