Diverted Neutral Current Demonstration - Normal, Open CNE, Current Circulation (Part 2)
A demonstration of diverted neutral current using a 12V AC test rig. This represents two adjacent properties with TN-C-S supplies via a CNE (combined neutral and earth) cable and a shared extraneous conductive part.
Demonstration includes:
► normal operation
► current sharing between the CNE and bonding conductors
► what happens with an open CNE in one property and not in the adjacent one
► the situation with more than two properties all connected to the same extraneous part.
In all cases, current can be found in the bonding conductors connected to shared metallic parts such as gas or water pipes.
Note that this demonstration uses a custom manufactured test rig which runs on an isolated 12 volt AC supply. Some of the items shown would be dangerous if done with 230V or a real electrical installation.

Hi j, really like your channel its very informative, just come across this older vidio of yours which i do remember, could you explain how the newer iet brown book now reference's this same model regarding the 3036 fuse . They've changed the book because of your teaching ,,brill!!
If you are in a shower area my existing pull cord switches a fan, Light and shower pump from the same switch. Is a special load carry switch necessary if you fitted juts outside shower room door? Will they carry the load? Should a relay be employed though; it still has to take a load ...so i am confused? yes your videos are a carming releaf from a importand but dry subject...thanks.
Very good way of explaining this.
Afternoon JW. Just purchased a 4 year old new build. It has an EV charger installed using 2.5mm T&A, with a 25A MCB on the consumer unit. Charger has been capped to 25A using dip switches inside the unit. When I plug my car in, as expected it’s capped at 25A which is fast enough for me. Is this OK or should I be expecting a house fire? 😅
May be acceptable, if the cable is either surface clipped or direct in the plaster/masonry. Not acceptable if it's in any kind of conduit or ducting, or passes through insulation. Even if it is surface clipped, it will get fairly warm in use, as it will be used pretty much at it's maximum rating.
@@jwflame Thank you JW. I managed to find out it’s 'clipped direct'. However, below the consumer unit is a switch that enables me to turn the EV charger on and off. 20A Double Pole switch. I assume this would not be a good thing having 25A passed through it?
Wow what a stupid design, thanks for sharing!
John, so if I have a steel frame pergola in a garden that has lights and heaters attached and wired through the frame it would need bonding accordingly as well then?
Can you fit a rcbo in a panel protected by a RCD?
Only if the RCBO can be connected directly to the main switch, and not via the RCD.
Excellent description and thanks for the practical way of telling between them.
Diversity Perfectly explained !
Dear John, have you quit doing CZcams videos....
No, there will be more at some point.
Like going back to school 😊
he did not explain how he connected the wires...i mean what i see is a plug with the 2 wires touching, that's a short circuit
It's a demonstration of the AFDDs. The wiring is not relevant, and isn't what would normally be used because it's just a demonstration.
@@jwflame yes, but i still want to know how you tripped the circuit.. did you make arc flash on a parallelle circuit?
The lighting circuit isn't RADIAL, they used to be. The lighting circuit is a Ring, you actually drew a ring circuit, ie the main conductor left the consumer unit and returned to it. A radial is where power is supplied to each device and doesn't have a return. Ps blue=black, brown=red. Unfortunately electricians use a red switch wire to connect to live. If they used a black switch wire to connect to the 'ring' live it would be obvious it was a switch wire. No extra bits of sheathing required.
No idea which video you watched, but it certainly wasn't this one.
J.W. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Crackin video mate, but slow down and enunciate a little clearer, Sir, Thank You 🙄
Great video - clear and useful. Thx
ill have crabbtree dist boargs on site. Looking for blanking plates
hi guys, i have a question. how does SPD protect your electrical appliances? when a high voltage occurs and SPD detects it, will your circuits be isolated?
The SPD becomes a short circuit for the duration of the overvoltage, so the voltage is reduced and the energy ends up as heat in the SPD. Nothing is isolated.
Hi John, looking at your inverter it has a grounding stud, is this a ground for the DC then? Kind regards
Pulled a few of those in my time as a firefighter, to isolate supply when BA crews are searching in a building.
Are the building regs statutory or not?
They are. www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2010/2214/contents
@@jwflame Thanks
Hi, good job, can you tell me were i can get new brushes? Thank you.
Is the Americium a solid or an encapsulated powder? Any risk of a powerful compressed airblast accidentally dispersing it?
Thank you John for another very clearly presented topic. With a TT system in the main house would it only be beneficial to connect the 10mm 3core SWA cable (cpc) to the outbuilding (with water and gas services) consumer unit MET where it has its own separate earth rod. I would imagine this setup, rather than keeping the two completely separate as you presented, is beneficial in trying to keep the Ra to a minimum. Or is it a pointlessly small benefit since you are relying on RCD for earth fault protection? I hope that makes sense? Many thanks for my crazy brain working overtime.
all my questions answered in ne video, great thank you .
Don't be afraid john
extreemly long video for a simple concept
What is the significance of the different colors of the clades?
Thanks. I tried these tests got 50 ohms on one reading. The problem for me wasn't that the heater wasn't working but the reset kept activating. The water did seem very hot. Broken stat?
hi john -thanks for explaining how this valve actually works -one question -will the valve move independenly of other contacts -ie will the valve still move from say the heating only position to the hot water only position even if the hot water thermostat is not calling for additional heat or will it stay in the hot water only position until the thermostat contact is triggered-best regatds graham
Thanks for your amazing videos. Did you ever consider reading the shipping forecast? I love your style.
and what is the point of terminating an earth to that fitting….? ( apart from the ‘regs’ say so!)
Awsome john thankyou😊😊
Thank you sir.

John i haven't had the pleasure to see all your vids. I was wondering if you could post or repost a vid on you fixing a 12v car battery charger or a 120v electric farm fencer. Thanks. Your vids are interesting i enjoy them.
Excellent explanation from real world experience.
It's got the right brand name, it might make you see stars! Wouldn't pass UK safety regulations.
In the USA we use Edison type lamp holders rather than bayonets. The Edison lamps use a screw thread system instead of push and twist
I am living in the USA and we measure cord thickness in the form of gauge rather than millimeter. In the USA the thickness of the flex would be 14 gauge which in the UK is 1 millimeter
