      Joe as long as the vinyl sealer is completely cured [cured does not mean the same as dried] as to the manufacturers guidelines you can scuff it up a little with 220 sand paper then apply the Aqua Coat Grain Filler as per instructions and apply your lacquer. If when sanding your vinyl sealer it gums up your sand paper it is not cured. Happy Filling.

    Hi! Newbie to DIY-ing here ... What is the purpose of the Shellac? If I'm painting my cabinets do I need to use that as well? Thanks in advance.

    • @aquacoat9589
      @aquacoat9589 Před 4 lety

      The purpose of the wax free shellac over the filler is the oak wood will give off an oil type product that is called tannins. The tannins over time might bleed through to your paint turning it yellow or brown in color over time. The shellac forms a great seal coat that prevents the tannins from coming through. If you are painting your cabinets the White Cabinet Grain filler will work better.

    • @aquacoat9589
      @aquacoat9589 Před 4 lety

      Sandy yes you can use a Polyacrylic over the grain filler as long as it is either brush or sprayed. You do not want to use a wipe on product with the grain filler because wipe on products are meant to be forced into the grain and not let other products penetrate the grain. This is exactly what Aqua Coat Grain Fillers do. So the 2 combined products will not work together if rubbed in/on.

    What are your thoughts on Aqua Coat clear vs white?

    • @aquacoat9589
      @aquacoat9589 Před 5 lety

      The Clear Grain Filler is used when you want to put a clear topcoat over the grain filler to get a smooth clear finish. The White Cabinet Grain Filler is used for when you want to fill the grain and seal the pores to attain a smooth painted finish. Like painting your cabinets, vanity, table or anything else you want to paint. The white will perform better when painting as it has higher solids and better adhesion, which means better performance in less coats.

You might need to be a little more attentive to left behind globs that you will need to sand lightly before adding more coats of filler or painting so as not to have your finished look be uneven. Don't you want to avoid using water-based fillers, primers, paints on wood? Wouldn't the water contained in these products cause the wood substrate to expand thereby ruining what you are trying to fill? I see this has a other applications besides cabinets, like perhaps smoothing out MDF. But that it is water-based scares me.

    • @mick2spic
      @mick2spic Před 6 lety

      I never used this product. But quality waterbased primers and paints are perfectly fine over wood. Might raise the grain on first coat. And waterbased primers/ paints would definitely raise the wood fibers of mdf. Except maybe Ben Moore Advance Primer, because it is a water/ alkyd mix, would be best I think for waterbased on mdf. Wood will expand naturally during changes in humidity/ temp changes. And if a waterbased paint is cracking/ peeling from that kind of wood expanding, that means it's a cheap/ inferior primer/ paint in my opinion. If you are trying to paint over veneer that could crack and show through the paint, but that would need a specific primer: XIM Peel Bond or Mad Dog Durabond.
