Everything Wrong with the Nikon Z6

I'm a photographer and filmmaker. This is everything I can tell that is wrong with the Nikon Z series cameras after using the Z6 for filmmaking. I apologize for the clickbaity title, my goal is not to say that the Z6 is a bad camera. It's a great camera! Nikon missed the mark with what filmmakers need to make great content. My hope is that they might see this and fix some of the issues. Nearly ...

    Mark, thanks for making this video. This is the exact video I was looking for. I am definitely not up to snuff on all the knowledge of these cables. The difference between the CAT 5/5e/6/7 cables is very helpful. I never realized that each improvement in cable was to further the prevention of crosstalk by either separating the twisted pairs or to increase twist rate for keeping the signal protected. Great job!

    CAT5e NOT Cat 5! Why do audio visual people keep making this grave mistake?

    • @markyfrencho
      @markyfrencho Před 11 měsíci

      Because the Cat5 spec technically covers Cat5e. Many Cat5 cables actually met the tighter tolerances of the enhanced spec but technicians needed a quicker way to tell the difference between a 100mbps cable and a 1gbps cable so the enhanced spec was produced.

    So a few things to add. Cat 6 and Cat 7 also increase the twist rate of the pairs. This is part of what allows higher speeds. Also AES 50 is spec to cat5e shielded ONLY. Using other specs of ethernet can cause issues. AES 50 is not an IP protocol, so it does not gain advantage of using cat 6 or 7, it can actually hurt things. AES 50 was designed with the characteristics of Cat5e shielded. Also the shield with AES 50 is to prevent static build up in cable and ground link of the ports. It will work and sync without the shield, but damage can happen to the ports due to static

      I would check out some of the Dave Rat videos. He goes through some of the advantages of different cat specs for AES50 and found no downsides for higher spec cables which is why SoundTools makes CAT7 ethercon for AES50. There can be some advantages in noisy RF environments as well as them being tougher cables overall.

      @@markyfrencho I have seen that video where he tested AES50 with cat6. Yes it may work but it's out of spec. I have seen so many posts on different groups about people having issues with AES50 when using cat6, swapping to cat5e fixed the issues. Music group has even told people this.

      @@DustySeven7 cat6 spec doesn’t have ground. AES50 is a 9 conductor protocol using ground as sync. That is the main issue people have with it. AES50 can also lose sync at lengths beyond 75’. The Cat7 spec has foiled pairs and foiled shield so it has the 9th conductor and added shielding as well as slightly thicker jacketing on the pairs and tighter twists as you said. All this leads to more efficient data transfer and lower cross-talk which has been proven to keep the signal stable over longer distances than Cat5e without any problems. Cat5e is merely a foiled shield around four pairs. I’m sorry if my descriptions were not clear enough for you, but I believe my information is correct and not misleading. I have been running Cat7 for AES50 for months at 85’ without any issues even passing near our 400A service. I highly recommend it for permanent installations.

Ignoring the fact that using the shield as a data signal path for something as crucial as clock without any immunity to noise as it’s not a balanced line (and in the spec of AES50 published for the Pro Series it’s two twisted pairs used for send and receive of the clock) I find your information a bit misleading.

    I like the nikon design. I actually don't like pancake lenses, they are a nightmare to hold. I wish the z6 body were a little larger. I dont think the z lenses are the same as the f mount lenses, z lenses knock the f lenses out of the park and that's why the premium pricing. I also admire the fact that nikon decided to bifurcate the professional filmmaker features from casual film making features. This makes the camera more affordable to a much wider section of the customer base who just want full frame 4k or full frame 1080p with decent slow motion. And if somebody wants professional tools then they can get a ninja v. I love the nikon colours, NOTHING comes even close. Z6 isnt the perfect camera but when i bought it with the 24-70 f4 lens and the ftz adapter, it cost was the least among it, fuji xt3+8-18mm f2.8 and gh5+its wide angle f2.8 lens. Z6 is a practical camera that has cut some corners to keep itself within the reach of a large number of working professionals. And thats what makes z6, despite its shortcomings, special.

    Mark, nail on the head. 15 year Nikon loyalist here. I’ve been a professional photographer for some time. I started dabbling with video 4 years ago and wanted to do both. Then the Z series comes along. I thought this was it, I’m in hybrid heaven. I own 4 Z cameras. I really wanted 4K60fps in log format. Here comes the Z6ii. All I hear about is how it is able to do 4k60 raw. So I buy the camera and then wait 2 months for the update just to be disappointed that it only does 4K60 internally at 8 bit. So wait!!! I get 4k up to 30 FPS over hdmi 10bit Log (Fantastic) and the new camera stops there??? That’s it!!!Once you get a taste of 10bit color there is no going back. I’m not shooting one thing in 10 bit then going back to 8 bit just to get 4k60. Epic mistake by Nikon. I was so upset. I love you Nikon it’s been a great run but I had to go to Sony for all my video needs. Please step it up! I really hope they don’t get left behind in photography as well.

  • @anfalshams
    @anfalshams Před 3 lety

    It’s a photo camera with some video features.. and for that title it does deliver.. EOS R and a7iii does not do shutter angle or the 10 bit internal.. so the z6 is competing for a different consumer compared to a gh5 .. i think the z lenses are fantastic.. if you are complaining then you haven’t used the primes.. probably the old G lenses might suit you for video but for photography it makes a difference.. they are designing it for the next 10 years when the cameras may be having 50-80mpxl

    • @markyfrencho
      @markyfrencho Před 3 lety

      I understand that they’re competing with a different market. My complaint is with that market really. Many filmmakers coming from DSLRs don’t know what they’re missing out on and how easy life is with shutter angle. Sony just released the FX3 cinema camera which also doesn’t have shutter angle. Cine camera operators are justifiably upset at the omission.

    • @anfalshams
      @anfalshams Před 3 lety

      Being a d750 user for a long time, Z6 has made me start videography thanks to autofocus .. if it was shutter angle or any of the pro level of operation then I would have to start learning the difference and it would be a hurdle to just start videography.. i think that’s why the mirrorless cameras don’t have such features.. once you need pro features, you need to buy a cine camera with those features.. expecting everything in a mirrorless body for 2000usd is not right.. gh5 is by Panasonic and they prioritize video over photo.. they want you to finally upgrade to their cine line.. and people who are into photography don’t get gh5.. so I think the user of a z6 will be fine with it until he eventually needs pro cine features.. but I think that Nikon should start making cinema cameras like c300 and c500. It’s high time. People leave nikon once they get into video. Z6 is a good effort but Nikon needs to show the target customer an upgrade path or else they won’t invest into Z lenses etc if they have to switch brands after a while..

    • @markyfrencho
      @markyfrencho Před 3 lety

      @@anfalshams I think telling a company that it’s okay for them to not include better software features because you didn’t pay much for the camera, is a terrible message to send. If you tried shutter angle you would love it. You don’t have to think about shutter speeds anymore, the camera sets the shutter speed based upon frame rate. It also lets you fine tune motion blur or adapt to flickering LEDs or anything like that. Yes, I totally agree that they should create a cine focused product range that uses the Z mount. Upgrade paths and building the value of investing in the ecosystem is truly where a system like this will either live or die.

    Noooo!!! The batteries are lithium. Do NOT run them empty. It will actually damage the battery. Never deep discharge a lithium battery. It was only ni-cads that had to be discharged to avoid a memory effect. Those are several generations out of date!

    • @markyfrencho
      @markyfrencho Před 8 lety

      First off, they don't fully discharge, the battery is listed as empty when the voltage drops below the necessary operating voltage. Voltage on these batteries drops with the amperage. Second, most of the issues come when you store them at either 100% or 0%. Since they never drop to 0% unless they have power leaks or you store an empty battery in the camera for long periods of time. Third, I challenge you to shoot one of these cameras and not run the battery to empty. My average was between 2-300 shots before empty. That's hardly any! Once it hit empty after 120! It's a crapshoot. Fourth, and finally, I'm back to using Nikon which lets me shoot a whole wedding all day and leave one battery at about 50% at the end of the day. (2-3,000 images!)

      No, I actually switched back to Nikon and am now shooting the D750. The autofocus was too much of a drawback. I shot 5 weddings with it and my numbers were pretty crazy. I was shooting average 5-6,000 images and getting 2-300 images final. With the Nikon I'm shooting 2-3,000 and getting average 6-800 useable final images. Mostly the issues with the Sony images were missed focus and too noisy to use in lowlight. The Nikon has none of those issues. All in all, the Sony is a great concept that they just weren't able to make properly. There's no weight savings for going mirrorless, my D750 is lighter than this with the 50mm. I plan to make a follow up video talking about all this.

I know that Pre-AF uses a LOT of battery (unless you are only using MF lenses of course or in general only MF'ing). That is the first thing I turn off in a Sony camera. This is a terrible review, it's more of a hands-on. I mean, you don't even know your camera, 4k?! 3 meg. EVF?! You do wonderful work, but you really need to think before recording such a review. You complain about battery life while using the A7II with Wi-fi, NFC, EVF, I.S, peaking, magnify and other features without adjusting your workflow, maintaining the same workflow you have with a DSLR that doesn't offer the same features. Try using your Nikon in Live view all the time and tell me how many shots you can get with it, you do mention the airplane mode but that's not even the full deal. And the evf is a 2.36M dot OLED viewfinder not a 3 meg. viewfinder (we wish! :) ). The LCD is also more detailed than most lcd's at 1,230,000 in a 3'' tilt display compared with Canon's 3.2" - 1,040,000 dots on the 5dMkIII. You can get over +800 shots with this camera, go to the Sony A7R facebook group to get help on this tool. You should customize your camera, the magnify you liked can be under your thumb in one button. Be careful with the cheap adapters it ruins image quality. Keep up the good work.
