The Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA) is an international research institution and museum premised on the belief that architecture is a public concern. We produce exhibitions and publications, develop and share our collection as a resource, advance research, offer public programs, and host a range of other activities driven by a curiosity about how architecture shapes-and might reshape-contemporary life. We invite collaborators and the wider public to engage with our activities, giving new relevance to architectural thinking in light of current disciplinary and cultural issues.

Opening Conference - Groundwork : Into the Island
This event introduces the first chapter of our three-part Groundwork series, curated by Francesco Garutti. Throughout the series, documentary films created with director Joshua Frank serve as curatorial tools to reveal the thought processes, research, and transformative moments that occur in the early stages of architectural projects. In the context of the ecological crisis, the project explores how contemporary architects from different geographies cultivate alternative modes of engagement with project sites, as well as how they position themselves in relation to the changing boundaries of the field.
As the subject of the first film and exhibition Into the Island, Xu Tiantian will present her work and her involvement in rural revitalization processes in China, including ongoing projects on Meizhou Island, off the Chinese coast.

9:03 Ah yes, the immediate question of if we can take Lutyens seriously... A better question is whether we can take seriously someone with such misguided inquiry. The whole time he's trying to come off as an objective authority, but he can't get out hardly a single sentence of commentary without evident bias and disdain for this assignment he's been forced to carry out. Modernist misanthropic martian of a man.
Hi there, You’ve got it all wrong. Dr. Baker explains why you can’t fault Lutyens for not being a modernist, as so many modernists did later on, when writing off great architects of the pre-modern era as “medieval” and therefore irrelevant. This was very much the case in the 1970’s when the program was made. Baker then proceeds to demonstrate how great Lutyens was as an architect: 1. Can we take him seriously? Baker answers that Lutyens was never a part of any modernist movement, which was long after his time. In fact, only Macintosh on the British isles had the modernist spirit as it was defined post WWI. So yes - we should take Lutyens seriously. 2. How good was he? Presenter goes on to explain the brilliant layout of the house plans and intricate relationship of house and garden with every angle and detail thought through down to the last rain gutter. So yes, he was in fact great. This whole program’s purpose is to bring to light the brilliance of Lutyens in a time of international modernism and “verfremdung.”

Jimmy Page has owned this for decades I believe. Probably bought it not long after this was broadcast. I never realised there was a door right on the street, hopefully it has good security as Jimmy attracts some very warped people.

So beautifully explained @ Sangeeta Bagga . ❤
I understood Quarry Hill flats were demolished owing to a design fault in the concrete making them structurally unstable?? They must have looked stunning back in the day before the white horizontal lines became the dirty grey I remember as a child in 1960s Leeds.
I am almost certain that my grandad - a town planning consultant to Leeds Council in the 1930s - was probably involved at some level with the planning of Quarry Hill. The old petrol station on the roundabout is definitely 'his' - his ideal design for a 'modern' petrol station. Oh, and in a nod to this interesting channel being Canadian, my grandad worked in Vancouver, pre-WW1, with his uncle Thomas H Mawson on Stanley Park etc
The 1960s Hyde Park flats in Sheffield also used the Garchey waste disposal system which didn't always work and made the kitchen smell awful. I lived in one, as a student in 1979, for a while when many of the flats were rented to students.
Quarry Hill flats demolished 1978
The concept, (the five points etc) are genius. The fact that the building leaked from day one, was uninhabitable, the owner left, and within a very short time, the building had to be fully "restored" or perhaps finished might be a better description. It stands as a symbol of his genius and is exciting to visit for aspiring young architects (like it was for me some 30+ years ago). The details are also very interesting. Alas I live in a climate where this building would indeed remain uninhabitable.... however I will never forget my visit and the many sketches. ( I left my camera in Canada on this trip, so I had to draw what I saw.... I recommend this to students. Also go to Ranchamp, which breaks all of the five points. And try to get to Unite... Radiant City Insanity aside, Unite is an amazing building... No I am not a moonie. I think the guy was an evil person... and his letters to his ma are very telling!
Marvelous.

Nice info
It is hard for modern people to imagine that this house was built for a world that was lit (and heated) only by fire, in a part of the world that can be quite dark and cold much of the year. Lutyens is considering not just visual and spacial experiences, but also some practical problems which are very different from our own.
Beautiful to look at. Wouldn't want live there. Can you imagine how cold that living room floor would be in the winter with all those French doors and floor to ceiling glass. There are 16 large glass doors in the living room dining making it impossible to heat in the winter. A dream house where you freeze to death in the winter. No thanks.
The video was shot without a wide angle lens, so it shows details of some of the interiors but never the whole. The charming anecdotes and descriptions reveal very little about the architecture.
Do you have any recommendations for videos that go into more architectural detail with good visuals? I’ve found the mix of anecdotes and visuals in this series to be most helpful
Incredible talk. Masterful depth into layers of a complex creator
What a pleasant documentary! No inane background music or crazy camera work. This is the way to do it.
Once again, the British reluctance to adequately maintain anything is prevalent. No money is set aside for upkeep and so its no wonder that some of these well intentioned designs are often derided. Its not the design that is disliked, but the fact that the lift didnt work, or the grass was concreted over and the benches removed etc.
Suburb, simply suburb....

Nice quote at the end.
Semidetached hose are exellent for getting married and starting a family. You do not have to live in each others pocket. Even knock a door between them so you both choose self time and quality time with each other. That is a formula for a long marrage.
Hello, we live in Berlin and would love to watch the film. Is there somewhere the possibility to watch the film here or online. Thank you very much.

Highpoint was 40 years old when this film was made - to think someone was still using original flooring and the bathroom fittings at that time is quite something. The building is now nearly 90 years old.
Never mind the flat being there also the Market just before the fire and Killingbeck police station still being completed.
I enjoyed these glimps into the past
Several words come to mind as I watch this -- cold, hard, grim, austere, unwelcoming, unattractive, frightening.
