    Watched the whole thing. Maybe I’ll do this this winter. Pretty sure I can’t make 40 miles a day! This would be my first backpacking experience. What do you think of using a hammock with mosquito and rain accessories?

    • @GlennTremml
      @GlennTremml Před 4 lety

      Several scouts in my troop love and always use hammocks on campouts. Being a side sleeper, who turns a lot, not for me. Devil's advocate comments: Will you always find 2 tress? Probably. Mosquitos may be off you but will buzz close to your head and ears. Drives me crazy. A few nights may be very cold. Hanging in the air makes it colder if no insulation underneath, which some hammock companies do make. Suggest trying a weekend backpacking trip with a hammock and see if it is for you!

    • @GlennTremml
      @GlennTremml Před 4 lety

      Columbia Drainmaker. Tried 4 different shoes in 6 months leading up to trip. These dried the fastest and were the lightest and most comfortable. Even in very dry year, your shoes will get soaked. Waterproof or resistant shoes will get wet heavy and won't dry until you get home. The skin on your feet will pay the price. I wear Gortex shoes in Colorado trying to keep my feet dry, but in Florida I know I will get wet and focus on how well the drain and dry while continuing to walk.

    How has this wonderful synopsis of a pretty heroic 1100 mile thru-hike in just 29 days not gotten more views? I cannot believe all the AT hike videos I have slogged through before this gem popped up in my feed. Well, Glenn, a rather belated congratulations on pushing almost 40 miles every day for a month to complete your FT thru-hike in 2017. Have you kept hiking, or has your "hot wife" kept you home? I am going to recommend this video to anyone that is thinking about hiking the FT as a terrific overview of what to expect when hiking in Florida. I've only hiked the pretty parts of the FT, skipping the road and dyke walks. I do FT maintenance with the Indian River Chapter in Three Lakes and Bull Creek. I'll be attempting a thru-hike of the AT in 2020, so I'll be doing sections of the FT this fall and winter as training. You might consider following a fellow Indian River hiker's video to lighten your load: see JupiterHikes czcams.com/channels/TY6PJNvuO49nIG-aWSVLJQ.html

      Columbia Drainmaker. Your shoes will get soaked. "Water proof" shoes will never dry once wet! I went with fastest drying shoes which I tested. Tested 6 pairs of shoes in my 6 months of training. Even made final selection with a a different shoe on each foot, walking in water on purpose and hiking 10 miles. Drainermakers dried faster, weighed less after wet hike, and remained most comfortable hiking when wet in my opinion. Wore these over 2 pairs of REI sock liners. Pre-mailed myself another pair at about 600 miles, but mailed them back home since one pair made it the entire trail. Hike a lot in Colorado and opposite approach hiking in waterproof shoes.

    Great video! I bet the Florida Trail is something you should only do during the winter since summer would be too hot and unbearable. I've been to coastal South Carolina quite a bit in the winter and it sounds like similar nice weather and it's really nice to see the tropics and subtropics when you aren't getting eaten by mosquitoes and suffering from the intense heat and humidity. Due to the lack of major elevation changes, I bet this intrastate trail would be a good one for beginners too.

    How many days do you usually go on the florida trail without resupplying for food?

    • @GlennTremml
      @GlennTremml Před 5 lety

      I was covering a lot of miles per day so longest resupply was 3 days (100 miles with no civilization). If you do 10 miles a day, you may need 10 days of food. I had 3 mail drops with food and always a Dollar General or gas station near by when crossing roads to get some food until reaching a town. I was not picky. Hot meal every night on trail with freeze dried food if on trail and bars for breakfast and lunch while walking if not in a town. Tried to sleep just before or after a town to take advantage of restaurants or grocery stores.

I’ve never backpacked before so I’d have to do a lot of research and preparation, but backpacking alone at 18 would test me in an exciting way. Realistically I would only be able to set aside 30 days to do it so I’d need more hiking experience and more physical endurance but I think I could plan it well.
