Hi really great video! Do you think If I were to buy land on the Hilo Side of the Island in the Pahoa / Hawaiian Beaches area, I would be allowed to build a Tiny Home?

Mahalo for these continued videos! We bought our lot in HPP as a first step of our 5 year plan a few months ago. I’m wondering if it would be beneficial to ship one car then the other when you’re ready to move everything else? We also have a pet and I’m sure there’ll be different rules by time we move but it sounds like you were able to get everything done beforehand with the vet, and leave the same day as your pet. I haven’t looked deep into this since it’s so far away time wise, but I thought there was a quarantine timeframe for the dog? We plan on getting a tiny home on a trailer to avoid long waits for permits then building a home once we are there so we don’t have an added expense of renting in the meantime (with a permit application for each item way before we move). 5 years goes by fast! Mahalo for all of the information!

I feel for the locals. It is also happening in other beautiful locations too. My adult children can't afford a home in our location. Prices for homes and land have skyrocketed!

The solution is simple. It starts with requiring a Hawaii State driver's license to acquire a STVR permit. As long as locals are operating, it's fine. When foreign investors (out of state or out of country) come in it artificially drives up prices and all the money leaves.

I use to work on a stvr. I made good money doing maintenance work. Maui county closed it up. The owner tried to rent it to locals renters. No one wanted to live there. The owners paid taxes on the stvr. Now the owner just pay regular property tax. The government lost big on that income.

Regulations are needed but not to the extreme they are. It is driving low to middle income citizens, farmers, ranchers, out of the rural areas into the cities. The Government is building pack and stack public housing. It's actually happening EVERYWHERE including on the mainland. Inflation along with non-Americans (ie China, Canada etc) are buying land and houses by outbidding Americans and paying cash. That has become a serious issue. Average middle income Americans are driven to renting. Then greedy landlords raise the rent over time. Becoming one big NYC. Hawaii is unaffordable for middle income Americans who dream of owning their own place. But whether it's in Hawaii or elsewhere, to experience your God given right to pursue your happiness by buying in rural areas, unless you pull together with family to buy, it's unattainable. Only the weathy will be able to have their piece of paradise. Us little people will own nothing and have to be satisfied with a concrete community, stack & pack housing and eating bugs.😢

We all know the real reasons why these videos are posted. But to post these reasons not to move, there is not cutting it. I've lived in CA=earthquake/fires/high cost living. Oregon= Volcanoes/earthquakes, known as the ring of fire. Midwest= Tornado alley. Lower south= Is hurricanes galore. The East coast= Blizzards. What's new! As for critters! Not a issue. Did I mention I lived in Iceland=real Volcanoes. The land of fire and ice. So! Wouldn't you rather have someone who respects the culture or the wealthy wealthy,who are really destroying the islands?

I was a Kamaaina for nearly 20 years on The Hilo/Puna districts of the Big Island. I love Hawaii and it's music culture and natural beauty. Number factor that forced me to leave was AFFORDABILITY. Hawaii has the highest cost of living in America. Crime was a bit high and too many locals strung out on Ice/Crystal meth. Don't know how the scene is now. I left in 2005.

When the leasehold expires, but is renewed, if it was under your name before that doesn’t mean that your name will still be on the lease once it’s extended right? You would have to pay another , say 400k to extend for X amount of years, is this correct? The money you spend on a leasehold you won’t be able to get back once the lease is renewed and if it is sold to someone else, correct?

It’s expensive to live here. Food, gas and other products are expensive . , it’s best if you trade and grow your own veggies etc. . things are far away so car mileage adds up fast. There are poor health care options here compared to Oahu and the mainland so major health issues are a real challenge . vog and lava dust and some pollens from mangoes creates major allergies. Earthquakes and tsunamis are not such a big issue except if your property is damaged by them. Don’t live close to the volcano. Beach erosion is an issue at some benches . Pigs and goats are a problem especially when you drive and turkeys and quail are running around. There are really no good restaurants here. Oahu has much better restaurants with good prices. Koki frogs maybe not bother you. Be careful when hiring contractors as they take a long time and do shabby work if not reputable. Be careful driving at night due to a lack of street lights and drunk drugged up drivers. Certain places like down south are know as the Wild West due tu the high crime rate ,. Tourist places seem to be places where minor crimes like theft occur so be safe . Real estate is too expensive here due to covid and mainlanders and investors who bought up properties to get cheaper investments and to get away from Covid etc. The public schools here have a bad reputation but there are private school options.

Are you saying that if the short term rentals weren't available for short term rentals it wouldn't affect the housing cost at all? The reason people buy and build STVR's are because it is a source of income so they can afford the high cost. So if that wasn't an issue you'd think that the housing prices would go down quite a bit as they won't be a source of income any longer.

Big island was a cool trip but a bit of a letdown: 1)most beaches arent swim friendly. Tons of rocks and heavy crashing water 2) food is not great. Nothing impressive for local foods. Doninos will be the best pizza you can get also 3) the views didnt impress me much. The sunsets on my farm are absolutely magical, hawaiin horizons are a bit boring. I had a fun trip, but not certain kd move or buy a place without like winning a lottery or something. 500k for small houses sucks, but thats not locals fault. Their government sold them out
