Gruesome and terrible. I don't think anyone should pass on such tales. People make up things when they don't know the true facts. The neighbors sure were malicious enough to make up such a story. I don't think they knew what those two girls may have suffered while growing up. Certainly no one deserves to be eaten by dogs.🥺

They were talking about the Ohio River. When my grandfather would go to work. Early 1930's the river was so low is spots the men could walk from W V to OH side Other parts so deep there where rip tides. 😂. My grandparents walked across when they were courting. They went for ice cream. Was a wonderful place to live then.

My grandmother was from Missouri, born in 1910, to a Scots-Irish family. She told me about "banshees" (which was scary enough), and she also told me about "haints". She told me a story that her older brother, and maybe other folks had been "hainted" (heard a haint), and that all the kids in the holler were scared that they would be next to hear one. She thought it was funny, but folks would take that stuff serious I guess. I'm in my 60's now, and I miss the old folks. Thanks for this awesome story. It really brought back happy memories...

I'd have to say sometime during the middle or late 19th century, since traveling preachers were pretty common then and since the story was told to WPA workers gathering folklore during the Great Depression in the 1930s.
