This song is written from the perspective of a cheating drunkard who tells his wife increasingly absurd lies in an attempt to answer for his absence.

This song bemoans the trivial state of contemporary pop music and tells listeners to "burn down the disco." Some misconstrued this as a racist attack on black music. Marr refuted these claims to NME in 1987: "To those who took offense at the 'burn down the disco' line I'd say, 'Please show me the black members of New Order!' For me, personally, New Order make great disco music, but there's no black people in the group. The point I'm making is that you can't just interchange the words 'black' and 'disco', or the phrases 'black music' and 'disco music'. It makes no earthly sense."

In this song, it is unclear if The Smiths' front man, Morrissey, is truly distraught about the condition of his girlfriend, or if he is being sarcastic. Morrissey's sexuality has been a matter of conjecture for many years, so it is even debatable whether the "girlfriend" referred to in this song is his own.

one of the saddest songs ever. up there with Save me, by Joan Armatrading, and the Night, by Morphine. beautiful. can't listen too often though. this is the best song if you're not feeling su!cidal enough. :p seriously though, if you are, call a help line. it can get better.

The album cover had a massive effect on me. I was a young teenager and wanted to join the ALF so badly, I thought the revolution was just around the corner and we would go farm to farm liberating all the cows and pigs. Oh well.

if someone made me point to one morrissey lyric that is the best example of why so many of the disenfranchised identified with him so strongly it would have to be "vivid and in your prime...you will leave me behind....i still remember cruising around in my plymouth horizon in college rocking that song out of my alpine stereo and infinity speakers and thinking of the latest girl i was crushing on but would never ask out...hearing that lyric and thinking...yep...mo is my boy!!!
