Funny, I went to a Harry Potter themed cafe while on vacation in Poland last month. I told the cashier that I practice close up magic and asked if I could show her some magic. She looked at me like, “I guess weirdo.” Then I did a handwashing and coin production as tip (the coin was worth about $1.25 US). Suddenly, she was totally into it. Then I asked if I could show more and did a linking rubber band routine. She told me after that it was the best part of her day. Magic is definitely special and a great excuse to interact with people. Cool video topic.

Magic is uniquely selfless and honest in that way. If a performer comes up and offers to sing for you or paint your picture, you are kind of obligated to give them attention and praise. Awkward. With magic, the audience is allowed (even expected) to be skeptical and the performer is inherently obligated to overcome that. If they perform well and deliver a magical experience, you'll know it and they'll know it. No faking polite praise is required.

Funny you say this Jay. This morning I went to a cafe to practice and some women asked me about the cards and ended up doing magic including sponge balls and exactly as you say I’m putting things in strangers hands and neither of us are thinking anything strange of it. It’s just magic flowing through us all. A fun innocence to it.

Bruh.... I've been doing magic since I was 8. The squeeze at around 7:12, great. You do a flip on top, but you don't even do another second deal to your mouth. How are you getting it back to center? You can uh, like find out who I am, or maybe just reply here. Great presentation, awesome with the clip switch (very original), but you are going so fast, even downloading the vid, I cannot see how you are not putting a joker in your mouth. Please advise, and thanks. Would love to do this, since well I was 7 when I watched Joe Monti do his giant card trick right in front of me with book sized cards and have never forgotten it, nor will ever cease to want to know how he's doing it.... that aside... hope you reply...

I this one. Its far easier if ask for typical animal you'd see at a zoo. Then you spot ..AKE or ... EPHA .. just by glancing and the possibilities are narrowed down but its still baffling.

Just thinking: if you want a really really clean throw using for instance only thumb and index finger, you could rough the bill up a bit so that it will automaticall retain the two cards!

Or you could just but chopsticks with symbols on them

I saw Harry Blackstone,Jr., perform an amazing coins thru the table routine on the Merv Griffin Show 1:14 w.As a kid,that routine is the one that did it for me.Many know of Blackstone Jr's big stage, illusion magic,but know also that he was master sleight of hand performer.Very versatile,and mind blowing ❤

My brother took a book out from the library and then showed how a string magically passed thru his thumb. I just had to find out how he did it it so when he returned the book to the library I took it out and studied it.

What got me into magic was the movie "Houdini" staring Tony Curtis, I was 10. First trick was Jiffy Coin Trick !

I assigned to inside deception 4 years ago. And seriously used it the la2 months. And BOY it was the biggest mistake to not getting into it 4 years earlier. This lifted my level of magic beyond... Jay you are an incredible inspiration and I love being your virtual Padavan❤

I have three early magic experiences but I can't remember what order. I had an uncle who was a magician that left a very early impression on me. I remember being really into those Worlds Greatest Magic specials with Alan Thicke so either Mac or my uncle taught me my first trick. And the first VHS tapes/magic kit I got was one of the Mark Wilson courses from an infomercial.

A cut and restore rope when i was 7 or 8. Blew my mind and got me interested in magic

The 2 tricks I saw upclose was at Disneyland when I was thirteen, they were the cups and balls and nickels to dimes

My dad taught me a "string through the neck" trick, followed by a "string through fingers" trick. I was just a wee lad at the time, perhaps five years old; and I got myself a loop of sting and practiced both tricks a few hundred times.

Me dad, he put a ping pong ball in his hat. Then he put the hat on him head, an snack down on d hat lad. And to behold, he spitted out the ping pong ball out his mouth... We still have it on Super 8 video. (Me trying to put on a Irish dialect for some reason)

The World's Greatest Magic specials on TV in the 90s. In particular, there was a performance by Joseph Gabriel called "The Mistake of Righteousness." Blew my mind as a kid and I wanted to be a small part of the magic world after that.

The first Magic trick was by Tommy Cooper the trick with the bottles-Glass Bottle Bottle Glass I new how it was done but it was so good and funny! loved this man and although he often messed up tricks he also did some great ones! real legend

Tom Auburn was the only one in the province of Quebec ,as far as i can remember. It was on a kids tv show. It was the usual classics from the time like ''Pom pom'' ,''Strat-O-Sphere'' or a ''vanishing silk routine''.

I was 15, and my mom told me that there was this magic shop next to her workplace, so one day we went in, it was Dominique Duvivier's shop, but I didn't know anything about magic, so we come in, and we ask for a trick, and the man performs the printing cards, and I was flabbergasted (I think that's the perfect word for that!) I was so fooled, we bought it right away, and I remember practicing, watching the DVD for hours! And yeah, here I am!

Gosh I wished I could remember the very first trick i ever saw. But I i cant. But i was completely hooked on Magic Land of Alakazam with Mark Wilson. Some of the tricks by him that stand out in my memory are the Squared Circle, Spirit Slates, and Multiplying Balls. Then there were all of the other great magicians I i saw in the 1960s. A big WOW for me was watching Lewis Ganson produce cards! And believe it ir not Clippo completely floored me. Another one was watching the Coin In The Bottle by a magician on the Steve Allen Show. So i don't know if any of these were the first tricks I i saw but they certainly sold me on my love for magic.

It was my dad when I was about 5. The tag on my denim pants fell off, and he made it vanish and reappear inside my mouth. I can still feel it materialize in my mouth. It feels (still to this day) like real magic. I've been chasing that feeling ever since -- for nearly 50 years.

I think it was a rubberband transpo from two fingers to other two, on a tv show.

Sponge balls and bunnies by my dads uncle when I was about 7 led to finding mark wilsons course in magic in my dads parents library, read few books on card magic but without proper guidance they just never solidified in my minds eye. Bought a Nelson bottle for my juggling show at misidrections in sf. Next summer I bought holy moly and scripted patter for the first time to an effect and worked it walk around San Francisco non stop that summer, thanks Jay those washers have cost me tens of thousands of dollars by now! It might not be the first trick I ever saw, but the first one that sticks in my head wasn't a professional magician or even great sleight of hand. I remember being quite young and my father holding up Rook cards one at a time and showing me the number on the face while he could only see the back. After a few seconds, he'd tell me what the number was without looking at the face. I couldn't figure out how he was doing it. I remember trying to determine if you could see through the cards -- you couldn't. I looking behind me for a mirror or reflective surface -- there was none. I was flabbergasted and flummoxed. I knew it wasn't real magic, but HOW could he know the number on the card? He FINALLY admitted how he was doing it -- my uncle, who was sitting a little to the side of me, could see the card and was tapping my dad's foot under the table to count out the value. I can remember thinking how simple the method was and yet how utterly fooled I was until it was revealed. If I remember right, they didn't actually plan it ahead of time, it just sort of came about as we were sitting at the table and playing with the cards. It made me love the idea of a simple method producing an amazing effect that could leave a spectator in awe.

I was 10 or 11. My dad used to take me to the local joke shop... They also sold magic tricks. I got a magic kit fr my birthday. Loved it ever since.

Can’t remember a specific trick…But the Paul Daniels show is what got me hooked…and that Christmas my grandmother (r.i.p. love you meme) got me my first magic set…the great Houdini magic set from am/av…it would be quite a few years later before I heard of Browsers Den and started ordering from Jeff…would love to meet him someday…

In the UK in the 60's to 80's it was Paul Daniels, Tommy Cooper, David Nixen, The great suprendo, magic shows were many and superb. Now at 72 I'm showing them to my grandchildren, having brought my kids up on magic tricks and still do them today. That moment of 'What!? How did you do that?' Never fails to give me a buzz. I recently showed a grand daughter your coin in the elbow and sliding knot trick and showed her how to do it. She loves them. Thanks for all the tutorials man, isn't it fun to keep the magic art alive?

I was a kid and my grandfather showed me the cops and robbers trick. Sealed my fate then and there, I knew I wanted to make people feel the amazement I felt.

My dad was a great with coins.... blew my mind so smooth .... he had an old friemd who taught him.. they were drinking buddies... ill never forget the old man who was his friemd.. i guess he was semi famous back during WWII. He name was Dean Cobbledyk.. weird name . Great slight of hand. . Cards coins you name it... he'd do it right smack in front of know it alls men who thought they were smart.... Dean would make the men act like babling children.. . he died back in the 70s .. crazy times
