Gold, election tax plans & Halma: The Companies and Markets Show
This week’s podcast begins with Alex Hamer discussing our latest cover feature on the rise of gold and to a lesser extent copper prices. Alex outlines the drivers of these price moves and highlights a variety of companies seeking to take advantage of these trends.
Then, in a week when the biggest UK political parties all published their general election manifestos, Hermione Taylor asks what these pledges might mean for both the national and household finances.
We conclude with a look at full-year results from safety equipment manufacturer Halma (HLMA). Mark Robinson asks whether another year of healthy growth has cemented its status as a quality UK share.

Nice en point chair of the review this week. Nice to get facts addressed, rather than boys jokes. Very interesting article in Economist from an interview of one of the board directors from Open AI who sacked Sam A. It has taken a long time for this to come out but in short he was lying to the board. Now another two members with oversight have resigned. So Open AI have set up their own non independent committee to oversee the new launches, headed by Sam A. The worrying thing about non arts based AI is that they do not know how these LLM models actually work. They just keep feeding the beast. So the beast reports the rubbish it has digested, like in response to "How many rocks should i eat for a healthy diet , one small one" no of us presidents wrong, use glue to stick cheese covering to pizza etc etc So given the lack of (current) oversight of LLM the best way for LLMs to be more accurate is to feed them better quality food. In this case there is a good reason on both sides to pay good sums / fees for quality content. On the down side , the use of copyrighted material will result in more news media going behind paywalls to protect themselves. The Pets at Home article was rather light. Having to be nudged re the expansion of the CMA investigation to the whole pets market is very significant. I would not bet on it being insignificant, tell that to CVS shareholders. I vote keep Mark as chair ....

His advice regarding active v. passive, ie index funds is a triumph of hope over experience. He admits(quoting Buffet) that finding a good active manager is simple but not easy. But he implores us to find one! Even Buffet suggests the average investor is better in an index fund. Napier comes off as foolish in this interview.

I am a simple chap but I don’t think this man is thinking very clearly, he seems to suggest that there is a great advantage to some countries to come from China no longer being the provider of cheap overseas production to the west. Ok very simple logic there. But then he starts rambling on about different countries debts, you’re not investing in the country you investing in firms in the country remember? He is also a lawyer I believe? In my opinion the best background for this field is probably an economic historian. He also doesn’t like index funds but fails to properly explain why. Apart from that it’s really quite interesting.

The boards should be forced to pay out dividends. Buffett's hypocrisy on this isn't called out enough - smaller investors live on dividends, they can't wait five years to sell at opportune times. Meanwhile Buffett gets MONTHLY checks from his controlled businesses - real Houdini PR he pulled off there. Good guests, keep it up.

    1. Reits. Interesting conjecture re merger, but what did stand out was fact that should it happen they would become no 2 by size. 2. Until the new FCA classifications are applied don't think you can say anything at all about trends, they are all so different. Lordy, sounds like Anna Karena!!!! How can you say that following Ukraine, there was a rush to oil and gas? Germany is covering rooftops with solar, providing grants, and the one place it never wants to be is dependent on carbon fuels. Similarly all kinds of heat pumps. Now BP and shell are using free cash flow to provide dividends and share but backs. They are not spending much on new exploration. Anyone see a possible problem here for them. So they like to flood us with advertising as , in transition companies, but really.,.. motorists will be charging up at home for most journeys which are short. There are problems with esg, re planning, but with the transition really just starting we will learn. In Scotland there are huge areas which can utilise solar panels and sheep grazing together. The problem is picking or getting a connection into the grid. You want to be as close to grid as possible. Should hardly need AI to work that one out. Ng holders think, there is a lot of capital expenditure coming up. 3. Goodwin. Although I have read re results recently, and know all the great stuff they do .... I have in my mind a barn in the Cotswolds, turning out spare parts for oil companies and spitfires (latest radar). Just loved that bit of the podcast. Wonder what the AGM is like (:-))))

This was just an excellent interview. Historically I have noted Mr Lee's investment decisions. I never liked the cussons idea, but now I find out his history regarding this company (being on board) now completes the picture. Interesting to note the value of brands from the hotel Chocolat offer. I never rated them with disastrous expansion, but Cadbury reckon 100 per cent premium is ok. Eye opener. The questions from the interviewer were also spot on. Wasn't looking for absolute winners/ losers recommendations . Lovely to hear that like Anna Karena that we all have some good uns, and some disasters. This is what Ic do well, small caps, which have fewer analyst coverage, and not the boring USA big 7 plus ai , available every where. Remember, AI is just an algorithm, nothing more. With new York times et al after them for stealing content, one toss of the coin could end the data they require to feed the algo. Interesting times, more small cap coverage please ic , it's your strength ...
