      Thanks for your comment. Their audio performance is actually very similar when programmed for a mild-to-moderate hearing loss. You can compare all of their scores and listen to sound files on hearadvisor.com. From a user perspective, Lexie B2 has a very straightforward and easy to use app while Lucid Engage's app feels more antiquated but with more personalization options. - Steve

I am currently testing the Starkey Genesis AI, and tomorrow switch to a week of the Resound Nexia. So far, the quality of prescription hearing aids doesn't justify the high cost. Received the Jabra Select 200 mid October 2023. I ordered the product to assist with my hearing which was tested as "Severely impaired" in the high, mid and low frequencies. At age 82 I decided it was time to get on top of my hearing loss. Product instructions and Android app are easy to follow and supplemented with Jabra's videos. I contacted Jabra about the metallic like sounds reported by others. They updated my Android Jabra app within a day or so. Hearing my voice and others is normal now with their updated hearing profile. Working with their excellent Zoom based specialist I have been able to "tune" the Jabra devices to my ears including selecting the right dome size for each ear (the left ear required the mid-size closed dome while the right ear requires the large closed dome) and using the sport lock which is necessary for my active life style. Their product support is excellent. Overall, I am very satisfied with the Jabra Select 200.

    Hello, What about the difference with the Widex Sheer 440? They advertise that one as especially good for music, which Signia doesn't do. I have the Signia's for trial, right now with semi open domes because my lower freq. are good enough. But i experience, esp. with voices, also in music(!), a rough, distorted sound. Can you help me with advise?

    • @hearadvisor
      @hearadvisor Před 7 měsíci

      Hello Reteph, Both Widex Moment and Signia C&G scored similarly for streamed audio. Here is a link to HearingTracker's comparison page where you can more easily see the stats and hear the audio files for each (www.hearingtracker.com/hearing-aids/compare/widex-moment-sheer-440-vs-signia-pure-ix-charge-go-t-ix-7ix). Regarding the distortion you hear, a few things come to mind. It is worth noting that hearing aids are generally programmed for speech clarity. These settings tend to differ from those best for music sound quality. Id speak with your audiologist and see if they can provide a dedicated music program with specialized settings (e.g. broader frequency response, reduced compression, increased max power output, disabled frequency lowering/compression). These adjustments are very specific to your listening situations (streamed music, you playing acoustic guitar, live performances, etc.). For example, It louder situations like live performances it is generally better to remove your hearing aids and use quality musician's hearing protection. Hope that helps and good luck! - Steve

    • @Reteph58
      @Reteph58 Před 7 měsíci

      @@hearadvisor Thx, esp. for the link! It seems the Widex is some better!? How come? The Signia goes to 12 kHz and has 48 channels and 20 bands. So much more than the Signia. For me direct listening to an excellent soundsystem is the most important, esp. hearing true focus, space and depth in the sound. So what would be your advise? The Signia has 'Sound Smoothing' does that influence.the general sound e.g. maybe the somewhat rough sound on voices that i experience? PS: It is strange the difference in loudness in the last 2 soundsamples of streaming (initial and tuned).

    • @hearadvisor
      @hearadvisor Před 7 měsíci

      @Reteph58, as I'm sure you know there are many variables that influence music sound quality. Bass response is a major one that may outweigh the impact of extended high-frequencies and extra channels. You can find perceptual studies assessing this across both normal hearing individuals and those with hearing loss. Again, I would find an audiologist who specializes in music and have them program your devices. I'd wager this would make the biggest improvement in sound quality regardless of the company you go with. SoundSmoothing is Signia's lingo for transient noise reduction algorithms which attempts to reduce the annoyance of sudden loud and or impact sounds. It is commonly best to have this turned off for music. Any loudness difference are the result of changes to the frequency spectrum (the volumes are matched at 1 kHz during calibration). - Steve

    I was skeptical when I first ordered the Jabra select 200 hearing aids on line I have had hearing aids from Miracle Ear for the last 5 years and had nothing but problems. I had them replaced several times under warranty because they stopped working. I saw the audiologist every 3 month for adjustments, cleaning and an annual hearing test. This was included with my purchase. I think because I had an audiologist for those many years, helped me to feel more comfortable working with Jabra customer care and their audiologist who helped me by programming my hearing aids with my last hearing test from Miracle Ear It really fine tuned what I was hearing and not hearing These aids are superior to my previous hearing aids from Miracle Ear and at a quarter of the price I paid Miracle Ear With a full 3 year replacement warranty and the excellent customer support, I couldn’t ask for more.

    Hi. Just starting the OTC hearing aid search. I really appreciate your information on CZcams. I’d like to ask a couple of questions, please. I wear hats and sunglasses or reading glasses most of the time. Where are the microphones located on the over ear units and are they compatible with hats and sunglasses? I can’t let no hearing aids be messin’ with my style. Can your wear either in or over ear type when lounging on the couch watching TV and laying on your side, head pressed into a pillow? I realize they won’t pick up sound, but will they be uncomfortable? Are the any good in ear OTC hearing aids that are rechargeable and don’t need frequent changes of batteries? I’m stylish and lazy. Thanks, Maury

    • @hearadvisor
      @hearadvisor Před 7 měsíci

      Hello Maury and thanks for the kind words. The microphones of behind-the-ear hearing aids are located on the top of the device. This may cause slight "scratching" or "clicking" noises if your hat or classes come in contact with the hearing aid body. However, this is generally not a big issue in general use. In short, many people successfully wear behind-the-ear style devices with both glasses and hats. You can wear either style while watching television. However, you will likely experience a whistling sound (feedback) and discomfort if you are laying on your side with your ear pressed against a pillow. It can also put undue stress on the earwire of behind-the-ear hearing aids leading to premature malfunction. If it's an in-the-ear style you may be able to make it work by muting the device so long as it doesn't cause pressure points when in your ear. We have found many viable OTC rechargeable products. You can find a list of our 2023 Expert Choice winners which is our "Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval" here: hearadvisor.com/2023-winners Hope that helps! - Steve

      @hearadvisor Před 7 měsíci

      Hi @Psythik, I responded to a similar question of yours in another comment thread. Better music sound quality commonly can be found in advanced earbuds or in-the-ear style devices due to the occlusion they provide and style of speaker used. For example, Apple Airpods Pro will often provide outstanding music quality compared to an "open-fit" traditional hearing aid. - Steve

    • @hearadvisor
      @hearadvisor Před 7 měsíci

      Hi @only1humann, it really depends on the situation and it is difficult as the goals are opposing (reduce sound vs amplifying it to compensate for hearing loss). In hazardous sound settings such as industry or loud venues it is generally best to discontinue use of hearing aids and rely on hearing protection. Certain earplugs can offer you protection without completely muffling speech. There are also forms of active hearing protection, such as Etymotic Research MusicPro, that can work well in these situations. It's best to speak with an audiologist who specializes in this area to discuss options that may work for you as well as monitor your hearing to assess the effectiveness of any methods you try. - Steve

Much of this depends on how the device sits in your ear, you generally want a more occluded, or "plugged", fit to get that rich low-end for music. - Steve

      Don't know which route you went as your comment is from two months ago. I bought the Airpod Pro 2 as starter hearing aids due to the low cost ($200 currently). They work well enough for my mild loss at the low end and moderate loss at the high end of the spectrum that I am now wondering just how much better dedicated hearing aids might be. But I love the Bluetooth streaming for music, youtube, audiobooks and the like. That sample from the Jabra was horrible, almost unusable other than maybe a quick phone call. A real turn off. So I am super glad to have heard it, as I would have been very disappointed to spend that kind of money to get that sound. I think for now I will stick to the Airpod Pro 2 - they work well enough as hearing aids to be useful, but also work well as earbuds.

      I've had a different experience. Other than a long wait for the appointment with the audiologist, they've been very supportive. For example, a couple of times they supplied small parts for free to improve the fit. A remote programming of the devices also improved them. It's not like going to an audiologist in town but neither is the cost.

    I'm satisfied with these. I'm 86, a new hearing aid user. About two years ago I give Oticon a real try, but couldn't accept the tinny sound of my own voice, after numerous visits for adjusments. The Jabras also make my voice sound tinny, but now I'm readier to accept this, espcially at such a significantly lower price! I really like the online appointments with the audiologist, and have been satisfied with the help given. (I have a background in Speech Path/Aud, so I have some confidence in general ability to know what the issues are.)

      Hi Sally, happy to hear they’re working for you. Good point regards being “ready” to hear high frequencies again (if that’s where you’re hearing loss is). Thanks for watching. - Steve

    I purchased jabra select 200 several months ago and wear them almost every day. For clarifying voices in meetings and moderately loud environments they are great. My experience is very similar the testing results in your video. The online audiologists are very helpful and can download updates immediately. The phone app is quite good and so is bluetooth streaming on Android. I'm able to stream CZcams, Audible, music, and phone calls. For some reason streaming Teams and Zoom do not work on my phone with them. Overall I am pleased with the hearing aids and glad I got them.

    Ok, I've been playing for 50 years and using hearing aids for the past 4 years. So far every hearing aid I've tried shifts the high frequency range out of phase with the original source and my guitar sounds like a Sitar. This is the first time I've heard guitar this clearly through hearing aids. I wonder, though, if my experience might be because of positioning, my ears are generally located behind the guitar rather than in front like your example. Could you possibly do a similar test with a set of Jabra or Resound hearing aids?

    • @hearadvisor
      @hearadvisor Před 8 měsíci

      Hi Chris, thanks for watching. I know exactly what you are talking about regarding the Sitar sound. It occurs due to the processing delay in hearing aids. Even though it’s milliseconds, it’s enough to cause phase issues when the hearing aid sound mixes with the direct sound entering your ear. I also found IX to provide a cleaner sound in this regard. A few thoughts come to mind. Newer hearing aids have lower processing delays which may reduce the phase issues. I was also using “sleeve” domes which are slightly more occluding than your traditional open domes. The more plugged your ear, the less mixing between processed and direct sound. Do you mind sharing what devices you wear and what the ear tips look like? I do plan to create more vids like this so thanks for the recommendation! - Steve

      @@hearadvisor No problem, I had come to the same conclusion regarding processing delay. In fact I was able to reproduce the sound via my recording studio. I used my audiogram as a template for an E.Q. filter, copied the upper frequencies and pasted them back in with a 2ms delay. My audiologist agreed with the processing delay diagnosis. I have tried Resound One and am currently using the Jabra Enhance Pro hearing aids with open domes. I have other domes I can experiment with, but haven't had much time yet. I'll be testing them out as soon as I can! Thanks for the tip! I am fortunate that I have a good knowledge of audio signal processing, as well as having over 35 years in I.T. behind me. There isn't much I cannot figure out. My hearing requirements aren't something that audiologists come across every day, so finding someone who can work with me has been a bit of a challenge. I now have my own fitting software and NOAH link so I can play with my settings, then when I return to my audiologist, we can tweak them even further.

      I got distracted when you mentioned recording studio (I’m an audio engineer as well 😃). Really interesting to hear your experimentation, engineers make excellent audiologists because they know audio, DSP, signal flow well. So definitely glad you have that background to support what you’re doing. - Steve

      Also note that the guitar you're hearing in the video is only the direct audio feed from the aids (I assume) therefore you're not hearing a delay relative to the direct/live sound from the guitar. I.e. this video only plays one audio stream so there is no original audio and therefore no delay.

    • @hearadvisor
      @hearadvisor Před 8 měsíci

      The eartips were not completely plugging the ear so this audio is actually the combination of both pathways (natural audio from guitar to eardrum/mic and the processed hearing aid signal to eardrum/mic). I would generally expect a more "phasey" sound due to comb filtering so this was a bit shocking to me. - Steve

    How is Hear Advisor funded?

    • @hearadvisor
      @hearadvisor Před 9 měsíci

      Great question Christopher. Much of our work has been internally funded. Shortly after launching in January, companies began reaching out for product testing so we make money through lab evaluations vetting products (such as devices not yet on the market looking to benchmark). We also license use of the Expert Choice award to companies that receive it and wish to use it on their website or other marketing materials. We have been fortunate in keeping costs down by already owning much of the equipment used and not relying on a commercial facility for testing. - Steve

    Sad to see so many OTC devices on your list. I'm not an audiologist, just a hearing impaired Vietnam veteran with tinnitus. I think the average OTC hearing aid user is going to order them online, maybe after taking an online hearing test and not going to bother going to see a hearing care professional. I think this is a huge mistake that many people will make, to their own detriment. Someone with a huge piece of earwax blocking their ear canal probably won't need a hearing aid, just a wax removal. I think you get my point...

    • @hearadvisor
      @hearadvisor Před 9 měsíci

      Thanks for your comment, you bring up a valid point. We are strong advocates for hearing care and “best-practices” audiologists. In a perfect world everyone would be able to receive quality care, in a timely manner, without extreme costs. Unfortunately this is not what most people experience. In that light, we’ve been very relieved to find that there are viable OTC products available. Further, we’re finding that these OTC products can be “tuned” by audiologists in most cases to offer better performance. So the two do not have to be mutually exclusive which is a win for everyone. P.s. I did C&P examinations for years for the VA through a nonprofit, thank you for your service! - Steve
