I had a used Subaru FF-1 1100 said to be a 1970 model though Interestingly, I have seen a 1968 model on youtube that looks identical down to the color of the red water pump pulley and enameled green valve covers, inboard drum brakes, the whole 9 yards. It had high miles when i got it in '74 or '75 too but always gave great gas mileage @ 40+MPG. I had it 13 yrs and even did a light engine rebuild in 1980 which lasted well! I wish I had gotten it new and still could buy such a car today!

Should've been mentioned these engines were originally designed for some of japans airplanes in ww2. Sad to think my 2011 wrx is the peak performance for the EJ 2.5 Im not saying theyre the best car or better than say a porsche but for your money they handle incredibly. The symmetrical awd and the weight distribution just makebit even better

Front mounted engines are usually the best for overtuned engines. Even with AWD, MR and RR will lose handling on sudden / intense acceleration. Dont even mention crests and inclination changes lol

Own a 2019 Subaru Ascent. Smooth, quiet and extremely comfortable ride. All of my passengers still comment today in 2023. Very roomy, tons of safety features this SUV humms at 85mph on-going no problem. The air conditioning system is bar none the best. Maintenance costs are very reasonable. You won't even hit a large maintenance bill until 60k miles. Cost is around $745 but they do a lot on the vehicle and then, other than my free oil changes at the dealer, my next expense is minimal at 90k miles. What is nice about the boxer, 4 cylinder turbo engine is that if needed, you have a tremendous amount of power starting at just 2000 rpm! Punch it and go if needed.

The "Boxer"air-cooled engine was first developed in 1885 by Karl Benz. Benz received a patent for the engine 1886. it was aplied to motor cycles and quite extensively in the Volkswagon. Over the years VW stopped using the boxer engine and went water cooled. Subaru obtained the rights to the engine and over the years Subaru engineers converted to what it is today

I like Subarus. Unfortunately Subaru has not improved its head gasket system in 20 plus years and leads to engine failure. I have learned this 3 times from Suburu and not once have they offered to cover their design flaw with a warranty (IE expensive). I can live without AWD...I cannot live without an engine. Do yourself a favor....don't but a Subaru unless they fix this fatal flaw.
