I feel that these masks are great for many uses including filtering allergens such as dust and pollen. I would wear these for housework, yard work, and animal care. If you think you want to use these to replace an official N95 for any high risk situation, I would first call Filti or visit filti.com and double check on their specs and uses. Then I would make sure I have a fantastic seal so ALL the air goes through the filter and none around it, and I would feel more comfortable using 2 layers to get closer to a 95% filtration rate. I have no affiliation with Filti and cannot verify any official use for any health gain or prevention. DO NOT use Filti with materials including, but not limited to, gasses, vapors, sandblasting, or asbestos (the official 3M N95's cannot be used for those purposes either). Again CALL FILTI to verify any information.

I have not used any of the following personally, but they seem as though they should work:
3" roller pins: amzn.to/3LRhCuh OR amzn.to/34VKq4c

DEVELOPMENT BACKSTORY: I really like my Conestoga Mask (Fall 2020), which is more like a true N95 configuration and so stood off the face for breathe-ability and for better filtration efficiency. I can also get a good seal with the strap configuration and nose seal. BUT, it was difficult to make (about an hour of difficult seaming) and, though the filtration liner was disposable, the fabric needed to be maintained. I found myself looking for an easier way that maintained efficiency and breathe-ability, but was disposable.
After a lot of experimentation with Filti, I finally developed the FAST MASK which is the best of all worlds. It has a 95% filtration efficiency at .3 microns (independently tested fabric by TSI), it is disposable (no more washing masks), is made in the USA (no more made in XXXXX), is safe (no more wondering what chemicals and substances I'm breathing in the mask), and again, effective (no more low particle capture rates of even the best fabrics). As a bonus, it is ALTERABLE/customizable (no more having to readjust your mask constantly which, in addition to not offering any seal, seems counterproductive by touching your mask and surfaces and mask and surfaces frequently).
So I had a great fabric (Filti), I had a great design, but it took too long to make. No one can justify much DIY time on a disposable mask. It took awhile for me to develop the right system to streamline the process and justify the time cost. The final iteration is FAST MASK which is an EASY -to-make mask with only basic cutting; folding; and sewing three, short, straight seams on very forgiving fabric in less time than it takes to brew a cup of coffee.
The 2-minute FAST MASK challenge: Collectively, we can push process development forward, and reduce the DIY time to 2 minutes per mask. I have already gotten some sharper blades, a new cutting board, and a straight edge that is 6" wide. I have sliced open and taped down my pattern on the straight edge for a really fast cutting mark for the Filti fabric. I can't wait to hear what you all think of!!

Gail….. it’s nice to see you. I hope everyone in your family is doing well. I so enjoyed talking with your Mom when we all attended that small church not far from the Delaware River. DH&I moved to Kentucky in 1988 with our 4 children. I had wondered over the years how you were doing. Then CZcams happened, and the World-Wide Yuck made mask-wearing a must. Your mask-making videoes showed up on my Suggested Videoes list. It was so cool to read how well you have done in life with your college major. I sort of use my Home Ec major - I’m a school Lunch Lady, responsible for the vegetables and desserts we serve to our PK-5th grade students. I also do my best to keep track that those who are allergic to certain things receive an appropriate substitute. Playing with food everyday? So much fun. AmethystAnne is my YT name.

Hi Gail--so nice to see you again! When the need for masks is behind us, I hope you'll continue to post videos about making...ANYTHING! Your instructions and your videos are so clear and easy to follow and you've got such a calm, encouraging voice. I'd try anything you want to teach us. I do have one question, in previous videos you stressed the need to avoid any opening/outward bulging on the sides of the masks; that is, the edges of the mask between the ear loops. It seemed at around the :48 mark your mask did have an opening/outward bulging on either side. Am I mistaken? If I'm not, what is the rationale behind allowing this? Thank you so very much for all you do!

I took the recommendation from another of your videos to use 600 count cotton (fancy bedsheets), and chiffon, with a top layer of poly cotton since I was and am so spooked about getting sick. Never got sick and can now pop out an assembly line of masks for my mother (she wears hers everywhere), husband (he asked me for a bakers dozen before heading overseas for his 6-month ship assignment), and Yours Truly. I am going to do a deep search for a Joannes to find the correct fabric (northern NH, so there are none close by), and make this one. The ONE thing that I will need to overcome is the hesitation to use a mask with only one layer - but I trust your scientific research, so road trip for fabric shopping, here I come!

Agree with those concerns. I had asked my local medical professionals, including those giving the shots, and simply was given the ol’ hem & haw. I do know that genetically altered immortal human cells are what creat the protein. This is done by means of injecting these cells with a genetically modified gene of some sort-not wholly described in the article. The cells then creat the spike protein the body will learn to recognize as the uninvited party goer. Here is the link I sourced: czcams.com/video/-92HQA0GcI8/video.html ( I hope you find this link helpful. )

The vaccine will boost your immunity with any antibodies you have . My 92 year old mother only had slight back pain over in a few hours . All the persons in my moms nursing home ok and active . I had slight fatigue and body discomfort fixed with 1/2 Advil and cup coffee. 2nd vaccine very fatigue 2nd day laid around watched TV gone next day . No injection pain or anything else almost 70 years old .

Guess what! We are not in the United Kingdom. They alone use PENNY’s as currency. The United States has not used British currency since 1787. Therefore, explain how one can justify knowledge of scientific quality when they do not know what country they live in. The USA has used “Cent’s” for its one unit of currency now for 233 years. This video, in my world could have been conducted with valuable knowledge in less than five minutes. Also, recommended by CDC is “heavy quilters cotton, thread count around 110 psi, doubled and with filter. A number 2/4 coffee filter. Using the OLSON design mask”.

Nice video to show how to make a mask. But , please dont waste people's time with proving efficacy of masks. There is no science. Virus particle is 20 to 400 nanometers, smoke particle is 2500 nanometers. Last September CDC said cloth masks are are not effective against smoke particles, but they are against masks. OK, I know you need to make a video here. But I just want something to get my kids easy to breath masks. Masks don't work, they are just a sign of compliance and conformity.

I so appreciated your video with science behind it. It's now January 2021, and I"m wondering if you have updated information. I'm specifically looking for info on 1) what percentage of added filtration is provided by non-woven 100% polypropolene fabric (interfacing), and 2) what material increases the electrostatic charge between the layers. I read a journal article today on air filtration. www.cell.com/one-earth/fulltext/S2590-3322(20)30544-3. But it's over my head for discerning what a maker of homemade, reusable masks should do. I also wonder what the science is on laundering, and the effect of laundering on the filtration quality of both the filter layer and the outer layers. Thank you for any information you can provide. Thank you.
