Hi All! I enjoy fixing all sorts of things, including small engines and things of that nature. In fact I only started tinkering with engines a few years ago and I've really enjoyed learning about them! After that I quickly realized that most issues people run into with their equipment is actually not as complicated as it appears! So I'm here to show you that if I can do this, so can YOU! So come along with me as I learn more and try to save you some money in the meantime!

I need help! When I detached the extension pole, the green plug got yanked out of the pole, it's unseated from the pole. I can't shove it back in and there's a weird silver screw on the side of the grey bit that looks like a rivet or hex bolt..any idea how to reseat the plug or remove that bolt to better access the end?
This saw gets jammed and clogged SO often, that gap at the bottom of the saw is massive haha, I have to reseat the chain so often. But I need help! Also need to gease the needle cage bearing very important
You ah really put some work in on this video 💪
Rodney is clutch
I was going to get a compression tester but a couple decent mechanics showed as you did, testing by feel, AND they pointed out that pistons and rings can be bad and you still get good compression. They also pointed out that some saws showing low compression had clean piston and rings and ran well. I think examining the piston and rings visible condition is more useful. A pressure and vacuum test is more important, I think.
Great video buddy! I bought a very similar one, but different name brand, same fundamentals. We bought this to use for our Honda mower we just bought this year, 2024. I’m a true believer, and I tell my kids, keeping an eye on the oil levels of all your engines, is a great and responsible thing; from cars, to lawnmower engines, the lifeblood of of your engine is the oil! Take care!

Yea..its says non in Tucson Az..but I am told there is .
Really Nice video, very good explaination than others, also simpler which makes it perfect.
If you are dry pulling with no fuel mix you can cause a little damage.
Poulan pro is just a name to fool those who don’t know saws. It’s a cheap throw away saw. The craftsman is made by poulan also. The wild thing is a 50 hour saw, after 50:hrs it will be nearly worn out!
Got a 2008 pp, a2010 crafstman. So umm 10 to 15 years?😂😂 let me guess, you own a apple phone😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
@@kraftzion I repair saws, own many, 5 Stihl, 3 homelite, 2 macs, 1 Husqvarna, 3 craftsman made by poulan and wow 6 poulans. Have used them all and preferr the Stihl
@@magicone9327 so what do you think wears out on a poulan after 50 hours? And how long do you think the same part lasts on a stihl?
@@kraftzion rings wear down, not so much in the older ones when poulan made a good production saw. When they switched to selling to residential everything went downhill. I have had older poulans that would have been used felling or on the landing. Newer saw made with Plastics make them so much lighter but the plastics warp over time. I have a poulan 4218 that the clutch had become hot because the owner/user did not understand that when running, the brake must be released or the clutch will continue to spin and the drum won’t, it got hot. Apparently the chain wouldn’t stop so he tripped the brake when it sat idling. That practice was probably what took the temper out of the clutch springs and made it continue turning the chain. Anyway the plastic around the clutch and crankshaft melted enough that the oil pump drive moved away from the driven oil gear and would not oil. No repair for that one. Still have it as the engine is ok just the plastic is ruined. The old metal ones would have survived. Stihl uses chrome plate cylinders with higher quality ring material. On the cheaper home owner saws the rings wear rapidly and then the combustion gases start leaking by and it’s not long that the saw either seizes or loses so much compression that it just won’t fire.
Air in from muffler? I don’t think so!
Tried it on MS 170. DIDNT WORK
Watch until the end!
This method doesnt work as good on a lot of newer stuff because they have built in compression release to make it easier to start. The drop and hold the string method that is.
Don’t go cheap and get a Harbor Freight. Difference of 60 psi between harbor freight and one I rented from Auto Zone. I will be getting a new one soon.
Thank you for showing this. Nicely done.
Does it work fir a smaller saw
You’ll see if you watch until the end!
Why did the saw turn off when he touched the device on the garage door?
I have a tip for you. The way you pull on the cord makes a big difference to the wear of the starter. It is better to pull up any slack so the starter is engaged and even till you feel the compression, before yanking hard to start. When you just grab and pull without taking up the slack, those tiny parts that grab the shaft to spin it, get slammed very hard.
Ive seen some pros do this but never knew why, thanks man, now I need to get out of the habit of doing it wrong
@@fallingsuncreations9270 On a couple of my XL-12's, none of which are original new to me, I had to file down the rope spool quite a bit, where the dogs engage, to get it back to more or less flat. Worked, but now there is less metal. Are they called dogs? lol Another thing I noticed can happen if one pulls without taking up the slack, is the rope somehow drops a loop, becoming slack, with the pull handle hanging. Rare, but I have seen this happen. Partly due to the spool not returning/pulling well enough.

Has anyone done something similar to convert UK/AUS/NZ Dewalt 54v splitboom to the universal standard that the US version is on?
should do it a wide open throttle
14:04 thanks for watching!
Does the snap ring on the adjustable screw go on the inside or outside, I lost mine while cleaning
Are you talking about the chain tensioning screw?
Yes the tension screw I lost the ring
Ok I just pulled the cover off of mine and looked. The screw goes through the cover, then it looks like a washer is on the other side, and then the screw threads into the adjuster. I have a pic of it too but there is no way to post it here.
What is the part number for the carb?
Is there a 500 I that don't do it cuz I can't get mine to do it much brand new
That says 1/2 pint per gallon, not 2 pints. The recoil is just a piece of rope with a knot in one end and a wooden handle on the other end. You put the knot on the outside of the pulley and run the rope through a slot in the pulley, and wrap the rope around so it holds the rope in the slot. Always hold the rope tight, or it will just pull off the pulley without turning the engine over. Once you get it figured out, it works pretty well. It's much cooler than a recoil on those old saws. Thanks for the videos, and God bless you!
Thanks. Exactly what I was looking for before turning screws on my own and messing something up.
I have that same model and at the end of last year and now this year the spark plugs fouls in about 20 minutes of use, I clean it and keep going, what is causing this?
I'd start simple and try changing spark plug, but Its likely you've done that already (make sure you get the right one if not). After that its hard to say but most likely its due to an incorrect fuel to air mix. This model has an autochoke that may be stuck in the choke position causing to much fuel. Also check your air filter to make sure it's not clogged up. If it was me, I'd put a new plug in, clean the air filter and the carb, see if that helps....if not try replacing the autochoke. Also make sure you are running good fresh gas! Good luck and hope this points you in the right direction.
So this is how electric motors work
This is a 2 stroke gas motor cutaway.
Not nearly as good as getting the new guy to “push start” the AP saw by rolling it along on it’s cutting wheel.
4th thing you need to run (air)
Very true lol.
Mine won’t idle. Full choke idles half choke revs it and no choke it will rev higher but then it dies. Gotta drop to full choke to keep it running. Second I press throttle… dead. WTF
Could be a few things but most likely it’s an issue with fuel delivery. The engine is not getting enough fuel. Choking it increases the fuel and decreases the air intake. I’d clean the carburetor out, swap your fuel lines and fuel filter. If you don’t want to clean it or don’t feel comfortable you can buy a complete kit for cheap. Make sure to check your model number and find the right one but I’ve used this exact kit with success on 2 of these machines. amzn.to/4cUnC2J Good luck! Charge On!
I bought a similar product on ebay. When I extract the fluid, the suction is very weak. Also, the fluid drips right out of the straw
Maybe try to find where it’s losing it’s seal and perhaps you can fix it a bit. If it’s where the straw inserts that could be simple.
I followed this video and successfully got the ryobi attachment working with the Stihl power head just by cutting off 7/16 inches with a pipe cutter. Surprisingly didn’t have to decrease the ryobi pipe outer diameter or file away at the shaft. Thank you very much for making this video!
Awesome! That’s interesting that no removal was needed. Perhaps there are slight variations in tolerances of each product and it worked in your favor!
Got that chain way to tight
This model has a self loosening feature built into it. (I’m kidding but the tightening mechanism on this works very poorly and always loosens up considerably). After a minute of cutting it’s where it needs to be usually. But yeah good eye. Thanks!
@@mainelysmallengineDIY one question how many carb adjustments do you have on that engine? All I can find is the one for the idle, but been seeing some with a second that you need the single d tool to get to. Thanks
Only an idle adjustment on that one as far as I know so it’s pretty limited as to what you can do.
What kind of cleaning fluid do you recommend with this extractor, so as not to get any cross contamination between various fluid types such as brake fluid, oil etc?
I’ve been using a dish soap and water mixture and that seems to work well.
@@mainelysmallengineDIY ah I see. Thank you kindly for your reply.
ALL chainsaw were mixed at 16:1 or 24:1 until the 1970's. Scoring of the piston or cylinder was nearly UNHEARD of. Only if someone new nothing about mixing gas for a saw and got it way off. All of a sudden they ALL went to 50:1....1/3 of the oil. Until the 70's... 30 weight regular motor oil was the only oil used and mixing oil was NOT INVENTED. A man from Washington state wrote he and his father before him run a saw shop. They say it was intentional by companies to go to 50:1 to LIMIT the life of the engine....GOOD....for them...NOT you. This new oil is better so that is why is NO excuse to CUT the oil to 1/3 of the oil used back in the day. MIX YOUR gas 40:1 and then give it a little splash more oil.... IF you want your saw to last.....PERIOD. NEVER mix ANY 2 cycle engine 50:1....it is NOT enough oil for a piston going up and down 200 times...A SECOND....YES, A SECOND... at 12,000 RPM's....do the math if you think that is wrong.
Interesting info. I pretty much do exactly what you say as far as ratios. Its cheap in comparison to costly repairs down the road.
